一、阅读理解
A
The plan had been made to create a beautiful nature park with a large man-made lake on the outer parts of the city of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province. However, thanks to a terrible trick played by nature, what the officials have ended up with, is a natural sandy mess!
The gov ernment wanted to create a beautiful place where people of this busy industrial city could come to relax. But things did not quite turn out that way---shortly after digging up thousands of tons of sand, the underground water dried up. As a result, the dry sand has changed into a Sahara-like desert. While official reports show that the sand is piled up to 10 meters high, some people say that it is ten times more or about a 100-feet high in certain areas.
If that is not bad enough, the sand hills that now spread across an area the size of four football fields, have influenced the environment. What’s worse is that on windy days, the dry sand moves into the city center, making i t almost impossible to drive and forcing people to wear face masks and protective eyewear to prevent the sand from getting into their eyes, nose, and mouth.
In an act of trying to keep the sand and provide the illusion(幻想) of green fields, the officials have even tried covering it with a green plastic netting. However, that has not done much to improve the terrible situation!
As you can imagine, many of Zhengzhou’s residents are upset by the disaster. They think that desert wasteland that looks nothing like the green landscape they were promised, has resulted in polluting their pleasant city environment. Some think it is even stopping businessmen from coming to the city.

The world’s first “Sky Pool” has been uncoated(曝光)-and it’ll give anyone a touch of dizziness(眩晕), unless he or she is not bothered by heights.
Situated in the capital’s new riverside district beside Battersea Power Station, the glass pool, hanging 10 storeys, or 110 feet up as a bridge between two apartment buildings, is 25m long, 5m wide and 3m deep with a water depth of 1.2m. Developed and developing nations can learn from each other seeking a low carbon economy, a Chinese government official said in Shanghai yesterday.
“China doesn't lag developed nations in terms of energy saving a nd green economy”, said Zhou Changyi, director of the energy saving department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
“While we can learn many aspects from developed nations, they also should learn something from us, such as water conservation,” Zhou said in a speech during the new Path of China's Industrialization forum at the ongoing China International Industry Fair 2009. He said industrialized nations and China are dealing with different issues to combat climate change. The United Kingdom, for example, is concerned about transport, buildings and new energy in reducing carbon emissions. For China, the most urgent task is how to realize new type of industrialization and avoid mistakes that other countries made when they industrialized.
As such, overseas exhibitors at this year's fair are showing ways to help China achieve low carbon em issions in the industrial section.
Swiss power and automation technology group ABB called for a stronger focus on product lifecycle assessment, or LCA, which is used to study the environmental impact of a product from the research and manufacturing stage through its usage and recycling.
Tobias Becker, head of ABB's process automation division for North Asia and China, said LCA is an effective tool in helping manufacturing industries to reduce carbon emissions.
LCA shows that industrial customers should focus on a product's environmental impact throughout its lifecycle instead of on its initial investment or ready to use stage. Fo r example, a motor's initial investment accounts for only 3 percent of its lifecycle cost, while 94 percent goes to fuel consumption and the rest to maintenance.
R ichard Hausmann, North East Asia CEO of Siemens, said, “The color of future industrialization is green.”
The Germany Company recently announces that it wants to receive orders worth more than 6 billion Euros (US 8.8 billion) for intelligent net power networks, Smart Grid, over the next five years. Siemens has set a 20 percent market share target for the global smart grid business.

An insect bee stands out on the logo of the Scripps National S pelling Bee, despite “Bee” being unrelated to the name of the insect. “Bee” refers to “a gathering”, where people join together in an activity.
The National Spelling Bee, formed in 1925, was a collection of many local spelling bees, organized by Louisville. With competitions, cash pr izes, and a trip to the nation’s capital, it was hoped that the bee would stimulate “general interest among pupils in a dull subject”. Mark Neuhauser won the national Spelling Bee held that year, by successfully spelling “gladiolus”. In 2014, there were tw o winners of the bee-a conclusion that has only happened three other times in Bee history, and not since 1962. Sriam Harthwar, a 14-year-old from New York and Ansun Sujoe, a 13-year-old from Texas shared the excitement as co-champions after 22 rounds of spelling. Each took home over $30,000 in cash, scholarship and bonds.
The spelling bee has been held every year except for 1943-1945 due to World War
II. Later, the Scripps Company acquired the rights to the program in 1941. The bee is held in late May or early June of each year. It is open to students who have not yet completed the eighth grade, reach their 15th birthday, nor won a precious National Spelling Bee. Its goal is educational; not only to encourage children to perfect the art of spelling, but also to help enlarge their vocabularies and widen their knowledge of the English language. 13.When did Mark win the National Spelling Bee?

As middle school students, it’s high time we learned to do everything independently, which
is of great importance to our future life. We can begin with small things such as washing our own clothes and cleaning our own bedrooms. Arriving home after school, we can give our parents a hand by helping them cook supper. As for studying in class, we should learn actively. It’s important for us to develop our ability of independent thinking, that is, think about questions by ourselves. We sometimes need to make plans or decisions alone. Don’t always depend on others.
If we ke ep on doing like this, we’ll surly become more and more independent.。
