I’m fond of EHS because English is my favorite subject. Though that sou nds like the beginning paragraph of a suck-up(奉承者), it’s true. I love reading and writing, and while I may not be the best at it, certainly try my hardest. I intend to run for EHS Vice President, along with Jordan Pincus, because I feel that’s the best pos ition for me in this Honor Society. I want to be able to share my own ideas on how to better improve EHS without being the absolute top, and what better position for that than Vice President.
I feel I’m qualified for this position because I’m full of g reat ideas and love English.
I actually get English, and get along very well with others, which is very important for
a board member. As a team, Jordan and I work very well together. Despite some disagreeing from time to time, the two of us actually end up getting more done at a faster pace, and because we spend most of our time together, communication issues are not a problem. Nothing is better for Vice Presidents to have than two people who are always together. On top of that, we are both devoted to anything we start, so EHS will never be ignored by either of us.
I will contribute all I can to EHS, whether in making sure meetings run smoothly or finding new projects/events for the club to do as a whole. I personally believe that I am fit for
the job and will be able to perform tasks above the highest exceptions placed on me, which may sound a little prejudiced but I really think I'm fit for this! Thank you for reading this and taking me into consideration.
24. Why does the author want to be EHS Vice President?
A. He is very good at English.
B. He has a talent for leadership.
C. He is very willing to help others.
D. He thinks he is fit for the position.
25. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. The author and Jordan can cooperate well.
B. The author and Jordan are good friends.
C. Jordan often quarrels with the author.
D. Communication is very important for friends.
26. What does “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Being EHS Vice President.
B. Being always together.
C. Communicating with each other.
D. Having good ideas.
27. What can we know about EHS?
A.It is short for “Honor Society”.
B. It is a club related to English.
C. It can improve the students’ results.
D. It often organizes some activities.
C
This is a photo of a similar car I own. It’s a photo of a Skoda Fabia, I drive one too. A young guy also got out of a similar car as I was getting close to mine. I laughed and was prepared to leave. The young guy continued to have a conversation with me.
He asked me how I found the car. It turned out that it was his first day to drive the car and it was new and it was a gift from his pa rents and he’d just passed his driving test today! What a coincidence (巧合)!
Well, this was a special moment for Nicholas. Who gets a new car the day they learn to drive an d then drives into a garage and has a talk with a woman who’s driving the same model of car? Yes, beautiful synchronicity (同步性) in full view.
I wanted to make this moment special for Nicholas, and I wanted to gift him something. Thinking on my feet, I thought I’d buy him a lottery ticket (彩票) but it wasn’t special
enough.
I got into my car and removed my Guardian Angel key ring which I had attached to my front mirror. It was there to keep me safe. My birthday is on Guardian Angel’s Day too, so this is very special to me. I gave it to Nicholas and he was happy to receive it. Nicholas gave me a big hug.
Nicholas was not an overconfident guy. He also told me his mum was only out of hospital and now he’d be able to help her get about.
I’ll order myself another Guardian Angel key ring for my car for fear that my Guardian Angel will not be protecting me without the key ring. As for Nicholas, well, I wish he and his passengers a lifetime of safe driving.

A. The young guy’s excitement.

The Internet is the biggest source of information in the world, and it’s accessible through a computer. It consists millions of pages of data.
In 1969, DARPA, a US defence organization, developed a way for all their computers to “talk” to each other through the telephone. They created a network of computers called DARPANET. For fifteen years, only the US army could use this system of communication. Then in 1984, the US National Science Foundation(NSF) started the NSFNET network. It then became possible for universities to use the system as well. NSFNET became known as the
Inter-work, or “Internet”.
The World Wide Web is a computer network that allows computer users to access information from millions of websites via the Internet. At the moment, about 80 percent of web traffic is in English, but this percentage is going down. By2020, much web traffic could be in Chinese.
The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist; Tim Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television. He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland.
Berners-Lee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet, not just universities and the army. He designed the first “web browser”, which allowed computer users to access documents from other computers. From that moment on, the web and the Internet grew. Within five years, the number of Internet users rose from 600,000 to 40 million.
The Internet has created thousands of millionaires, but Berners-Lee is not one of them. Everyone in the world can access the Internet using his World Wide Web system. He now works as a lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.
32.From the third paragraph, we can conclude that ________.
A. English will be replaced by Chinese on the web in the future

Thank-You Notes: The Essential Life Lessons
There is no greater gift for any of us to give our friends and family than the gift of gratitude (感谢).____36 Take a quiet moment to think about the blessings of the season and write a thank-you note to everyone who made it special for you . There are some life lessons from thank-you notes.
37 Even a child can make some lines on paper, help pick out a pretty stamp, and lick the envelope. This helps create a sense of ownership , confidence , and contribution .
Thank-you notes strengthen communication skills. Wherever you are , no skill matters more than the ability to communicate clearly , sincerely and thoughtfully . 38 Those are the qualities that inspire people to trust and respect you .
Thank-you notes remind you about what matters. Maybe the gift was thoughtless. But when we write a thank-you note we have to locate within ourselves some way to be grateful and find some way to express it. We do not find happiness in what we get. 39 40 Not “Thanks for the sweater , ” but “Thank you for the sweater. It is cool. ”Not “ Thanks for the game, ”bu t “We had fun playing that game.”
I think you will soon discover that the more thank-you notes you send , the more you become aware of how much there is to be grateful for , and how good it feels to let people know you appreciate them.
A . Everyone can write a thank-you note .
B. And that can begin with thank-you notes.
C . Thank-you notes must have specific details .
D . There is no other way to convey this message .
E. You can even write to people you do not know.
F . We find happiness in being grateful for what we have .
G. It conveys maturity (成熟), reliability, confidence and thoughtfulness.

can be seen everywhere, which have attracted people's attention.
As the Tree-Planting Day is approaching, we call on everyone to take an active part in planting trees. As we all know, trees can absorb carbon dioxide in the air, which contributes to the greenhouse effect, so planting trees is an effective way to fight against global warming.
It is everyone's responsibility to protect Mother Earth. Let's plant trees in and around our houses. We can also donate some money to tree-planting projects. The more trees we plant, the better the environment will become.
Dear friends, we have only one earth. Let's take action from now on.
