第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Today the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded journalist Svetlana Alexievich approximately $970,000 in recognition of a lifetime of excellence. The
67-year-old author of V oices From Chernobyl and War's Unwomanly Face was praised by the Swedish Academy “for her polyphonic(复调式的) writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time.”
Prizes like the Nobel inspire much expectations before the announcement. People give their best guesses as to who will win, look back on past winners, and even place bets as if spectators at a Derby(赛马会).
Literary prizes reward artistic brilliance. They help writers earn a decent living. But is the public’s fascination with prize-winning authors healthy? Our impulse seems
to increasingly contribute to a culture of turning authors into celebrities, where readers follow the author instead of the book.
A story should stand on its own, as a considered, complete book, without biographical information from author. It’s an idea perhaps best conveyed in Roland Barthes’s 1968 essay The Death of the Author. “The image of literature to be found in contemporary culture is arbitrarily centered on the author, his person, his history, his tastes, his passions.”
Nearly 50 years later, a few still agree. “I believe that books, once they are written, have no need of their authors,” New York Times bestselling author Elena Ferrante once wrote. “If books have something to say, they will sooner or later find readers; if not, they won’t,”she continued. “True miracles are the ones whose makers will never be known.”
①But the rules for submission for the Man Booker International Prize, for example, strongly encourage authors to “make themselves available for publicity”. And the foundation behind the National Book Award requires finalists to participate in their “website-related publicity”.
② In 2007, a reporter who showed up uninvite d at Doris Lessing’s house was the first to inform her that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Today the Twitterati came knocking on Alexievich’s digital door hour before the award was even official. To be considered for a prize is to be a public figure.
③ Harry Potter series author J. K. Rowling, with over 5.6 million Twitter followers, has actively addressed readers through public appearances and social media, revealing much more than we could have imagined when we closed the final Harry Potter book. We now know the house Harry's children will be sorted into, that Dumbledore is
gay,“Voldemort” is actually pronounced with a silent “t”, and a whole host of the other minor and major details about the backstory of the characters.
The magical world Rowling created in her books—a relatively tight mystery with well-laid clues that led to a satisfying conclusion, which had to prove their merits to the reader based on an internal logic—is being unraveled by her own hand.
④ Of course, public attention also has very important benefits for authors. For three months after receiving the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in fiction, Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad sold about triple its print sales from before the prize, Publishers Weekly reports. On Oct. 5, 2010, in the first FT/Oppenheimer Funds Emerging Voices Awards, as Nigerian-born Chigozie Obioma accepted the prize for fiction with an easy smile, his excitement was appreciable. Given the cash prize of $40,000 for each winner, it’s hard to downplay the i mportance of such an honor. Such awards bring necessary visibility and funding to writers facing a literary landscape dominated by white men.
But our culture of celebrity is often too wrapped up in the way we read: How might the meaning of a work change if the author really didn’t grow up in a poor neighborhood, or if he or she was abused in childhood? Readers studied the author’s life as if it were the key to interpreting his or her novels.
Behind our fascination is the question that drives all such questions: What did the author intend? By all means, let us praise brilliant work and in doing so trust that the author has already told us enough, and that the story he or she meant to tell ended with the final page.
1、What can we learn from the passage?

23.(8分)It’s just been three months after the first bike-sharing company arrived in Singapore, but reports of abuse and vandalism(故意破坏)of shared bikes in the city keep appearing on social media.
The majority of these shared bikes are stationless, which means they don’t need to be stopped at a designated(指定的)spot. They lock themselves after your ride is over, and you’re meant to just leave the bike at the side of a road.
But users have been chaining up bicycles outside their apartments, preventing
others from using them. Some people bring them up to their apartment floors, so they can’t be found easily by other users. Some people have removed the bikes’ number plates or codes, and some even have painted over the bikes to claim the bikes for themselves. Most of the abused bikes belong to either Singapore-based oBike, or ofo, a bike-sharing giant based in China.
ofo has encouraged Singaporean users to report issues. oBike said that the number of bicycles that were damaged made up less than one percent of its fleet. The company sa id in February that it planned to bring in “tens of thousands” of bikes by mid-2017. The company has yet to ban anyone from its service, but said that it would take appropriate action – including making reports to the police.
oBike also introduced a shortcoming system, similar to that of its competitor, China-based Mobike. Users start with 100 points, which get taken away for errant(出格的)behaviour such as forgetting to lock the bike, or parking at non-designated areas. Users are banned from using oBike when their scores reach zero. oBike has an
eight-man operation team that can remove bicycles parked casually.
When approached for comment, Mobike said, “In China, just as in Singapore, there are always a tiny minority of people who abuse the bikes, so we designed our system to prevent this type of abuse.”
1、Who is the owner of most of the abused bikes?
A.Chinese government.
B.Local government.
C.A bike-sharing giant based in China.
D.The users of the bikes.
2、What is the attitude of the oBike toward the abuse of bikes?
A.Tolerant. B.Indifferent.
C.Supportive. D.Disapproving.
3、What is the meaning of the underlined word “that” in the fifth paragraph? A.System.
B.Bike.
C.Company.
D.Report.
4、What can we learn from the passage about shared bikes?
A.They will be introduced soon.
B.The abuse of the bikes is on the increase.
C.They are very expensive.
D.They are well preserved by users.
24.(8分)Happy Birthday to Me (and My Mom)
Forty-three years ago my mother went into labour for the second time. It was either very late New Year’s Day or very early on the second day of 1969 depending on how you looked at it but either way, it was a full week past her due date when my mom woke up knowing it was time to wake my dad up, get dressed, pack up the car and head to the hospital. Her regular doctor was on vacation and when they reached the hospital they planned to deliver in were told that the doctor was on his way to another hospital so they should head there, in a neighbouring city. Most surprising to me now is that she felt well enough to attend a New Year’s party the previous night and stayed long enough to toast in the new year!
My mom and her family had immigrated to the United States just twenty years earlier from El Salvador. And that was a lucky thing for me. Not only did my mom gain access to a better education and career options here in the US for herself, each of her three daughters would also enjoy her access to quality maternity (孕产妇的) care. While the US is hardly the world leader in maternal health or birth outcomes, these days a woman faces a 1 in 2,100 risk of dying during her life and in El Salvador, it’s 1 in 350-6 times worse. In 1969, that difference was even greater.
However, I was pregnant with my second child in El Salvador six years ago when I realized h ow very different my life might have turned out if I’d lived there when I delivered my first child. I travelled down there with CARE, the humanitarian relief organization, whose efforts my mom had long supported, to see some of their principal programmes in action. Among them was one in particular that remains with me today. It was a water project where pregnant women, many of whom had walked miles to access this clean water, receive some basic care before or after childbirth. Here these women were, facing the exact same physical challenges as me but still carrying the full work load of the family and with little to no resources for information, care, transportation or comfort during or after their pregnancies.
By this time, I was all too aware of what a challenge childbirth could be. After delivering my daughter in 2003, I survived a hemorrhage (大出血), the leading childbirth-related complication that takes the lives of thousands of other mothers all over the world. One girl or woman dies every 90 seconds in pregnancy or childbirth from what is in most cases a preventable death. I was as shocked as you are when I discovered this fact but I was also grateful. Grateful because I had been in the care of a team of health workers when I needed them most.
I thought o f my mother’s life. While she had been born in a good hospital in San Salvador in the 1930’s, at that time pregnancy-related deaths were common even in the US. My great grandmother also hemorrhaged, only after delivering her fifth child and
she died. Her h usband, my mom’s grandfather was a physician at the time. He would give up practising medicine forever when he couldn’t save her.
But it wasn’t only my mom and her family that I thought of as I considered my own fate and good fortune, it was all those wome n I’d spent the day with in the rural community I’d visited with CARE. We’d made a connection that day, we mothers, as women. These women did not have access to the simple interventions (介入) that could insure their survival and that’s what concerned me. It did more than concern me, it woke me up and begged this question, why should any one life be of different value than any other?
And so, I made the commitment right there and then to do all I could to improve maternal health and reduce the number of maternal deaths around the globe.

C.Physicians failed to save patients from various curable diseases.
D.Women would rather have no children for tear of a hemorrhage.
25.(10分)I’v worked part time since takin g early retirement ten years ago. I was inspired by an older friend. We worked for the same company, and he retired two years before I was also considered “spare”, as some companies call it.
Soon after I left work, we had lunch together. First, he assured me that there was life after work. Then he related his own experience. He didn’t want to take another
full-time job, so he turned his daughter’s old bedroom into a home office. He arranged for some consulting work from our old company, and he picked up more projects from other contacts. Soon he was working 20 to 30 hours a week. He wasn’t making as much money. His kids were grown-up, so he didn’t need as much income. “As soon as I left that job,” he told me, “my back problems went away. I started to eat bet ter and get more exercise, I make half as much money, but I feel twice as good, and I’m twice as happy.”
I decided to follow a similar track. At the time, my younger child almost finished college, so my parental responsibilities were winding down. We sold our old house and moved into a townhouse. I went to work for myself. And the result? Today I, too, make less money. But we make ends meet. And I feel twice as good and twice as happy.
Our experience isn’t for everybody. But a lot of people have retired ear ly and lived to tell the tale, which proves it possible. Jack, another friend, was a salesman for a communication firm. He had a long distance to work and did a lot of traveling. He decided to leave the corporate world, in part because he had health problems and he wanted to spend more time with his family. Later, he quit his job with flexible hours and was restored to his health. And now he has found a part-time job, and he, together with his family, is leading a more relaxing life.
1、How did the author and his friends feel about their retired life?
A.It’s busy but wealthy. B.It’s flexible but tiring.
C.It’s healthy and happy D.It’s relaxing and wasteful.
2、What did the writer’s friend try to tell him at lunch that day?
A.He regretted not leaving his job earlier. B.He lived a much better life after
retiring
C.He made more money after finding a new job. D.His life was not easy for him after losing his job.
3、Before Jack left his last job, he ______.
A.lived a busy life B.used to find part-time jobs
C.often traveled with his family D.worked hard as a real travel agent
4、What does the author mainly confirm by writing the text?
A.Health is more important than work
B.Y oung people generally live an exhausting life.
C.More retired people are paying attention to health.
D.It may be a good choice for people who retire early to do a part-time job.
