You must have heard of drug detection dogs (缉毒犬), but how about “drug detection squirrels?” Recently, Chongqing police have successfully trained six squirrels to detect drugs. They began their work in early February.
Squirrels have a sharp sense of smell. They can smell food 30 cm under snow. Being so small, they can search for drugs in places where dogs may not be able to reach, such as in narrow or high places. The squirrels are trained to use their claws to scratch (抓) at boxes to tell the police
if they detect drugs, according to Chongqing police.
“Our self-developed training system can be used to train different kinds of animals,” Yin Jin, a police dog trainer in Chongqing, told The Paper. The key is to develop the animals’ conditioned reflex (条件反射).
First, the animals need to be familiar with the drug’s smell. The trainers can put pieces of cloth with the drug’s smell next to the animals’ food. Next, the animals learn to search for the drug in different situations, such as from a large number of bags or among people walking in crowds. If the animals successfully detect the drug, they are rewarded (奖励) with snacks and other treats. After training for some time, the conditioned reflex will be built and the animals will search for drugs naturally.

Gifts are a good way of showing how much you care about someone, especially during the
festivals. 58 Luckily, picking the right gift can be a lot easier if you keep the following three tips in mind.
Know the person’s interests.
One of the worst things you can do is to give someone something he/she hates. It can hurt your friendship, because the other person may think you don’t care about him/her at all. 59 So you can make a list of what your friends like. Then try to find gifts that meet those interests. If they love music, you can give them CDs of their favourite singers’.
60
Gifts don’t have to be flashy (华而不实的) things. They can be something that is helpful in your friends’ daily life. So if you are looking for the right gift, you should find out what they need most.
61 Instead, listen carefully when they talk. For example, a friend may often say that he has no time to replace his broken schoolbag, you can surprise him with a new one.
Think about giving an experience.
Gifts don’t have to be physical things. 62 Studies have shown that a person remembers an experience more than physical things. If your friends are pop fans, a concert of their favourite pop stars must be a surprise and an experience that they will never forget.
A.Give them something they really want.
B.Choose to celebrate with a hand-made gift.
C.Online shops can be a good place to buy a gift.
D.But sometimes it can be difficult to find a perfect gift.
E.That’s why you should learn about his/her interests first.
F.They can be special experiences that the person did not expect.
G.Since gifts should be a surprise, don’t ask the person what they need.

Though the FIFA World Cup came to an end in December 2022, the people of a special city in China were busy making soccer history of their own.
Zibo in Shandong Province is called “the home of soccer ball”, being the birthplace of the ancient Chinese sport of cuju. Cuju won recognition (认可) from soccer’s governing body, FIFA, as the earliest form of soccer in 2004.
“Side-flicking (叶底摘桃)”, “chest down (燕归巢)” and “shoulder stopper (双肩背月)” are some of the key moves mastered by cuju players. Li Weipeng, 34, from Linzi district of Zibo city, is a seventh-generation inheritor (继承人) of cuju. He has practised these skills for 18 years.
Mastering different cuju skills isn’t easy. “At the beginning, I spent 8 hours a day practicing juggling (颠) a ball. It was tiring,” Li told China Daily. He is now able to juggle a ball with his foot over 10, 000 times in a row (连续地).
Teaching students cuju moves is a part of Li’s job. The traditional Chinese sport cuju is now popular at primary and middle schools in Linzi. Its moves have been adapted into dances and morning exercises.
“Students show great interest in playing cuju, which encourages me to promote (推广) the ancient sport,” Li told China Daily.
Moreover, cuju has also become a platform for cultural exchanges. During the World Cup in Qatar, Li introduced cuju at a China-Qatar youth exchange activity held in Doha. He led Chinese and Qatari youth players, wearing traditional cuju costumes to experience the ancient game.
