第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)A recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 32 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility (能见度) of yellow makes it less difficult for drivers to avoid getting into accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate.
The study was led by Prof Ho. To test whether there was a relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analysed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 2. 1 fewer accidents per 1,000 taxis per month.
They also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 12,300 taxis in a ratio(比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 32.2 fewer accidents will occur per month or 913 fewer accidents per year.
Assuming an average repair cost of $1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual saving of $ 2 million.
“We are eager to continue to validate (证实) the findings of our study by looking at the use of yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For example, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against those of other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we’re al so interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicles that are of different colors.” Explained Prof Ho.
1、Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents?
A.Because yellow can be seen more easily.
B.Because yellow signals a warning of danger.
C.Because drivers tend to be more careful in yellow taxis.
D.Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings.
2、What’s Prof Ho’s study based on?
A.Physical risks taxi passengers experience.
B.The economic effect of changing taxi color.
C.Data from Singapore’s largest taxi company.
D.Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide.
3、What do Prof Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest?
A.School buses should be painted yellow.
B.Their findings are worth popularizing.
C.Their study will be furthered.
D.Y ellow should be widely used in public transport.
4、What can be the best title for the text?
A.Caution: yellow taxis ahead B.Safer to ride in yellow taxis
C.Why are yellow taxis preferred? D.How can colors help prevent accidents?
22.(8分)Measles(麻疹) is only found in human beings. There is a highly effective and safe vaccine(疫苗) for the disease. So, in theory, measles could be destroyed.
Yet the number of measles cases is on the rise.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that, in the first three months of 3, the number of cases is three times higher than it was last year. Africa alone has had a 700 percent increase compared to last year.
The Democratic Republic of Congo reported 67,000 measles cases and 901 measles-related deaths in 38. This year, WHO officials have noted more than 40,000 suspected measles cases in the country. That number includes 284
measles-related deaths in the first weeks of 3. Between September 38 and February 3, Madagascar reported over 67,000 measles cases, including 828 deaths.
Dr. Fauci, who directs the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease in the USA, said that―one in 10 children who get infected with measles will get an ear infection that could cause deafness. One in 2 would get pneumonia. One in a thousand would get brain swelling, and one to three per thousand would die. To say that measles is a slight disease is completely incorrect.
Walter Orenstein is with the Emory University Vaccine Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He has spent his life working to end measles. Orenstein says possible effects of the disease are worse in poor countries. ―In those countries children are already at greater risk. They may be malnourished(营养不良的). They may have damaged immune systems. They may be underweight and may have no access to health care so measles is a big killer, he said.
You have a 90 percent chance of getting measles if you have not been vaccinated and you come in contact with someone who has it. Dr. Rebecca Martin is the Director of the Center for Global Health at the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control. She is working to remove measles from Africa completely. ―It is very infectious. It will find nearly everybody who is not protected against measles, Martin said.
Health experts advise patients to get two treatments of the measles vaccine. U.S. health officials say educating parents about both the disease and the vaccine is an important step in stopping the spread. Equally important is making vaccination a top goal of health systems worldwide.
1、The writer shows the sharp increase in measles cases by .
A.giving examples B.listing figures
C.analyzing causes D.following time order
2、The following are the possible results of measles except .
A.an ear infection B.pneumonia
C.brain swelling D.being underweight
3、What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Y ou are sure to get measles if you have not been vaccinated.
B.It is safe to come in contact with someone who has measles.
C.Parents should be educated about both the disease and the vaccine.
D.Making vaccination a goal of health systems is only necessary in Africa.
4、The purpose of the text is to .
A.show the serious situation of measles
B.prove measles could be destroyed
C.describe the result of the research on measles
D.warn us of the causes of measles
23.(8分)The Peanuts Movie, which hits theaters today, brings to life one of the most popular comic strips(连环漫画) ever to appear in print. For decades, kids have found humor and comfort in Charlie Brown and his pet dog, Snoopy. The characters came from the pen of Charles M. Schulz, whose comic strip, Peanuts, first appeared in newspapers in 1950.
Schulz, who died in 2000, was one of the most influential cartoonists in history. His son, Craig Schulz, has reinvented the Peanuts characters for a new generation of kids who may only be familiar with the holiday specials on TV. Craig co-wrote the screenplay for The peanuts Movie with his own son, Bryan.
Director Steve Martino created the computer-animated 3D characters for the movie. Even though he used new technology, he wanted to stay true to Charles Schulz’s original drawings. “I love to draw, I love to tell stories, and I got to do it in a big movie like this,” Martino said. “My hope was to bring these characters to life in a bigger way than we’ve ever seen, but be truthful to who they’ve always been.”
11-year-old Noah Schnapp voices the character of Charlie Brown. “It was a bit difficult at the beginning,” Noah said. “But once I got into it, I had so much fun.” Alex Garfin, 12, is the voice of Linus, Charlie’s friend. Alex has words of wisdom not just for Charlie, but also for kids who want to work on the entertainment industry. “If you don’t succeed, try again,” he said. “Y ou may not succeed 99 percent of the time, but that 1 percent probability w ill bring you
something.” Francesca Capaldi, 11, who voices the Little Red-Haired Girl, agrees.
“Dream big,” she said. “If you really want something, just go for it.”

24.(8分)Hearing Feelings behind Words
Most of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words. Words do provide us with some information, but meanings come from so many other sources. So it would be difficult for us to have an effective understanding if we rely too heavily on words alone. Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message. Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words. We don’t always say what we mean or mean what we say. Sometimes our words don’t mean anything except “I’m letting off some steam. I don’t really want you to pay close attention to what I’m saying. Just pay attention to what I’m feeling.” Mostly we mean several things at once. A person wanting to purchase a house says to the current owner, “This step has to be fixed before I’ll buy.” The owner says, “It’s been like that for years.” Actually, the step hasn’t been like that for years,
but the unspoken message is :”I don’t want to fix it. We put up with it. Why can’t you?” The more expansive meaning a message can be obtained by examining who said it, when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said.
When a message occurs can also disclose associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean much more than the frequency of the behavior. How about a friend’s unusually quiet behavior? It may only be understood by nothing what happened previously and the situations that required an abnormal amount of confidence. Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern of responses and seem illogic. For example, a person who says “No!” to a serials of charges like “You’re stupid,” “You’re lazy,” and “You’re dishonest,” may also say “No!” and try to justify his or her response if the next statement is “And you’re good looking.”
We would do well to listen for how messages are presented. The words, “It sure has been nice to have you over,” can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically. The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.
1、Effective communication is made possible between two conversing partners if .
A.they use proper words to carry their ideas
B.they both speak truly of their own feelings
C.they try to understand each other’s language
D.they are able to associate meaning with their words
2、“I’m letting off some steam” in paragraph 1 means .
A.I’m just kidding B.I’m just saying the opposite
C.I’m jus t calling your attention D.I’m just giving off some sound
3、The house-owner’s example shows that the he actually means .
A.the step has been like that for years
B.he doesn’t think it necessary to fix the step
C.the condition of the step is only a minor fault
D.the cost involved in the fixing should be shared
4、The word “ritualistically” in the last paragraph equals something done .
A.in a way of ceremony B.without true intention
C.with less emphasis D.light-heartedly
25.(10分)LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)—Legendary comic book writer Stan Lee has died at the age of 95, according to media reports on Monday.
Lee, born in Stanley Lieber on Dec. 28th, 1922, began his career in 1939 and joined the Marvel Comics in 21.
He is considered as one of the most legendary names in the history of comic books and the leading creative force behind the rise of Marvel Comics. He co-created iconic fictional characters such as Spider-Man, X-Men, the Avengers, and many more.
Lee’s characters often have super powers, but they also have weaknesses. They were humans, not gods. They not only struggled to save the world, but also to pay their bills, make friends, and hold jobs. This made Marvel comic book heroes stand apart from its competitor DC, which produced the seemingly perfect heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. Those superheroes have been adapted into blockbuster films, most of which were made after Disney acquired Marvel in a 4-billion-dollar deal in 2009.
In a statement, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company said Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created.
Marvel also praised Lee on its website by putting on one of Lee’s famous quotes, which goes, “I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic-book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it, they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain, you’re doing a good thing. ”
Praise from his Hollywood peers and colleagues was generous. President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige appreciated Lee’s unparalleled impact on the industry. “No one has had more of an impact on my career than Stan Lee,” Feige said. “Our thoughts are with his family and the millions of fans who have been forever touched by Stan’s genius, charisma and heart.”
