Biographical Introduction William Sidney Porter, whose pen name was O. Henry, was
Born in North Carolina, in 1862. His father was a doctor and an editor, and his mother sometimes wrote poetry. He got very little education. When he was eighteen years old he went to Texas, a land of ranches and cowboys, flocks of sheep and herds of cattle. Bought a newspaper with a friend and published the news of the week in humorous fashion, and also short sketches,
Henry James received education at home through private tutors. The James family’s travels in Europe were another source of education for him.

Major Works The Four Million, mainly short stories. Many of his stories tell about the lives of poor people in New York, as well as in other places. The title of The Four Million indicates that he considered all the people of New York City worth writing about, and not simply the upper “Four Hundred.” He sympathized with their lot, and hated those rich who exploited and despised them.
It is said that O. Henry imitated De Maupassant as a model. But O. Henry’s outlook upon life was not involved in such bitter gloom as the Frenchman’s, and his works are full of good-natured humors.
Drawings, and verse. Invited to New York to write short stories for Ainslee’s Magazine with a fixed yearly income of twelve hundred dollars. This seemed a big sum to him then but later he made as much as that in a week.

Biographical Introduction Born into a wealthy family in New York City. His father, Henry James, Sr. was a philosopher and a friend of Emerson’s; his brother William became a prominent philosopher and psychologist.
