Ⅲ.阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
At one time, people used to travel to foreign countries because they thought they would be different from home-the building, the food, the national dress. Nowadays, however, one large city is very like another. They all have their Hihon or Sheraton Hotels which look like Hilton or Sheraton Hotels everywhere. They all have their McDonald's, their KFCs, their Pizza Huts. Office buildings look the same everywhere, and most city centers are full of office buildings. And, of course, people are driving the same brands of Japanese or European cars, usually wearing the same kinds of clothing and watching---except for a few programs--the same American movies and TV shows. Airports are the same everywhere and the world's airlines are all flying the same aircraft, Boeings or Airbuses.
What, therefore, is the purpose of foreign travel for people who are not on business? What do tourists hope to experience in a foreign country that they cannot experience at home? Why travel to foreign countries at all? The answer could be that people are very interested in the past. It is a nation's history
that is its main attraction. Most of today's tourists travel overseas to find out what foreign countries and cultures used to be like, not what they are like today. The words "eultural tourism" are now part of the language of tourism, and it is the museums and works of art in many countries that are their main attractions.
If they are lucky--and have had sensible, strong governments--many countries "also usually have at least a few beautiful places for tourists to visit.
Finally there is perhaps a nation's greatest attraction: its people. A nation is not just its historical buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, it is also the people who live in it. This is why a country sueh as Thailand attracts millions of people every year. They come mainly- because of the friendliness of
the Thai people, it is why the Pacific Islands are also so popular. There may not be mueh to see or do in Fiji, but there are lots of friendly, smiling people to make visitors feel welcome.

A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months.
The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20%--40% that are caused by tiredness. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue.
Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband. The device, worn by drivers pilots, gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car joumey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel(方向盘). A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver's response.
Tiredness is directly related to a driver's response time. Usually, a watchful driver would take about 400 milliseconds to respond, hut once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy.
In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver's response continues to slow down, the sounds become mote frequent until a nonstop alma warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible. The device has been delivered to the department's laboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months' time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.

It was a warm April day when a big fat envelope cane in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word "congratulations." I don't remember ever smiling so wide.
Then I looked at my financial(财政的) package.
The cost of Dream School's tuition(学费), room and board was around $40,000--an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren't as famous as my firet choice.
In my mind, attending my dream university would he the only way to realize my dream of becoming a wnrld-elass writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiesl. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn't sure what to do.
One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents' financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself.
At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus(校园) ineluding guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring.
As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.
In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my "dream" university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.

How Long Can People Live?
She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a Concert in the neighborhood on her 121 st birthday. When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world's record holder. She lived to the ripe old age of 122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span (寿命) ? If scientists come up with some sort of pill or diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150--or
beyond?
Researchers don't entirely agree on the answers. "Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn't surprise me if someone alive today reaches 130 or 135, "says Jerry Shay at the University of Texas.
Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees. "People can live much longer than we think, " he says. "ExpertS used to say that humans couldn't live past 110. When Calment blew past that age, they raised the number to 120. So why can't we go higher?"
The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it's all just guessing. "Anyone can make up a number,," says Rieh Miller at the University of Michigan. "Usually the scientist who picks the highest number gets his name in Time magazine."
Won’t new anti-aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for aging would probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working On treatments that lengthen the life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life Span is about 80 years, says
Miller, "adding another 50 percent would get you to 120."
So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life, span is flexible(有弹性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of the University of Washington. "We can get flies to live 50 percent longer," he says. "But a fly's never going to live 150 years. Of course, if you became a new species (物种), one that ages at a slower speed, that would be a different story," he adds.
Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve(进化) their way to longer life? "It's pretty cool to think 'about," he says with a smile.
48.What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove to us?
A. People can live to 122.
B. Old people are creative.
C. Women are sporty at 85.
D. Women live longer than men.
49.According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas,
A. the average human life span could be 110
B. scientists cannot find ways to slow aging
C. :few people can expect to live to over 150
D. researchers are not sure how long people can live
50.Who would agree that a scientist will become famous if he makes the wildest guess at longevity?
A. Jerry Shay.
B. Steve Austad.
C. Rich Miller.
D. George Martin.
51.What can we infer fi'om the last three paragraphs?
A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.
B. The average human life span carmot be doubled.
C. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.
D. New techniques could be used to change flies into a new species.

Eating enough fruits and vegetables is what most people associate with good health habits. But just as important to healthy living are frequent doses(剂量) of laughter and humor--both proven to have a direct effect on health.
According to Wendy Shepard, clinical nurse specialist at Hopkins Bayview in Community Psychiatry's Creative Alternatives Program, laughter has definite physiological effects on the body. Laughing is like inside jogging(慢跑), she says. It cleans the respiratory(呼吸的)system, stimulates the digestive tract, increases heart rate and blood cireulation(循环), lowers blood pressure, reduces muscletension and increases the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-killers. Unfortunately, many people don't use humor enough when dealing with everyday life situations. Many wait for humor to happen to them instead of making it happen. "Humor is more than just laughing at a joke. It can become a way of life if you open yourself up to a new attitude," says Shepard. "The greatest thing about play, creativity and
laughter--all components(成分) of humor---is that you not only
help yourself, you help others. Humor is contagious(易感染他人的)!"
Shepard suggests that everyone relax and lighten up. It can be as easy as focusing on fun things to pick up at a dollar store. Shepard often travels with a grab bag of things to help make people smile. Of course, making humor a part of your life 365 days a year doesn't mean you have to carry a grab bag, put on a clown nose or tell jokes--although those things are fun in the right situation. Instead, look for ways to make the things you already do more fun, such as laughing with co-workers and smiling at people you don't know.
Says Shepard, "Some people need help in the funny-bone department. That's why it's good to practice having fun." Things you can do to practice include putting together humor collections, making joy lists and creating joy boxes. A joy box may include a collection of whatever makes you happy—letters from loved ones, a child's drawing, a favorite cartoon, a fun toy, a humorous video--the possibilities are endless. Shepard says she loves to give joy boxes or gags(笑话或滑稽故事) with playful gifts. She says that these gifts lift the spirits of even the most serious of people.
"Keeping in mind that not all prescriptions(处方 ) involve drugs, there is a prescription you can give a loved one, friend or colleague," says Shepard. "The healing power of laughter, play and humor is great. Besides, you can never overdose on it. It truly is the best medicine."
