What makes xiaolongbao special is the delicious soup that comes with every bite. It’s said that the development of xiaolongbao started in Shanghai, but now it is found all over the world. In a series of studies, Dweck and her team made experiment on 400 fifth graders from different parts of the United States.First, participants(参加者)were given a series of puzzles to test their IQ. After they finished their test, they were told their scores and praised in different ways. One group of participants were praised for their intelligence and were told -You got X number correct. That’s really good score. You must be very smart at this. Another group of pa rticipants were told, "You must have worked really hard." The students were then given a choice as to what kind of test they would take next. They could either take one that’s harder than the first one, or one that’s just as easy. A majority of the childre n who were praised for their intelligence chose to take the easy test whereas, 90% of those praised for their efforts chose to do the harder puzzles. While Dweck’s series of studies centered on children, it’s important to notice how having a particular mindset(心态)can influence you at any age. As someone with a fixed (固执的)mindset, you believe basic qualities—like-intelligence—are unchangeable. Since you are often praised for your intelligence, you want to continue remaining intelligent in the eyes of others so you shy away from challenges. However, as someone with a growth mindset you believe the harder you try, the more you’ll improve. You are not afraid of taking risks, even if there’s a big chance that you’ll all flat on your face along the way. More and more researches support the growth mindset," Dweck wrote in the journal Educational Leadership.“Basic aspects of intelligence can be strengthened through learning and adventures, and efforts and persistence in the face of challenges are key ingredients in o utstanding achievements.”Dweck’s studies teach us an important lesson about success. A person’s intelligence can only take him or her to certain distance. The rest of the way is paved by bravery and determination.37.What do Dweck and her team want to find out?A.The influence of praise on people. B.The IQ of each participant.C.The best way to achieve success. D.The positive influence of difficulties. 38.What can we learn from Paragnph 2 and 3?A.Participant received three experiments in total.B.Kids praised for their efforts later chose easier tests.C.One group of participants was smarter than the other group.D.Kids praised for their IQ later became afraid to fail.39.According to Paragraph 4, a man with a growth mindset ________.A.will go through much more failures B.is more likely to meet with difficulties C.is willing to challenge himself D.is more likely to become an educational leader40.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A.give the reasons for the studies B.show the findings of the studies C.describe the weak points of the studies D.introduce the methods of the studies三、补全短文5选5The past years have shown we need to prepare for the worst earthquakes. So an earthquake emergency kit should be something we need to have. 41.Well, that may not be a problem because you can buy your own one online.According to researchers, around 275 earthquakes are felt every day around the world. 42.There is a 30% higher chance that you will survive an earthquake if you have the kit. Some people think they can go to a shelter after an earthquake. 43.There may be too many people in the shelter. You may not find food or water as well.44.But whether you are near the fault line(断层线) or far from it, owning one for your household is still a must. Studies show that some states that are near the fault line have earthquake magnitudes (震级)of above 4.5. 45.So if you don’t have an earthquake eme rgency kit at home, make one yourself or buy one online.A.This only means that you never know how earthquakes hit until they hit you.B.Some people say that they don’t have time and money to prepare emergency kits for earthquakes.C.Some people don’t think they need an earthquake emergency kit because they don’t live near the fault line.D.Half of these are large enough to ask that families should own earthquake emergency kits.E.However, instead of depending on your shelter, an earthquake emergency kit is your best choice when an earthquake happens.四、单词填空根据下列短文及所给单词的首字母写出所缺单词。

One was about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother was in deep sorrow. Could Della help? That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Della was looking for. To celebrate her 53rd, the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime(风铃)with the message“Listen to the wind and know that I am near”w ritten on it. It now hangs in the four-year-old's bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants. This is not the first time that Della has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th, in 2016, she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond. Its aim is simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found via Dclla's blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.Della pays for everything herself: gift cards, pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs, and care packages, as well as the gas it takes to play fairy. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores.“I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like 'YESSS!”It's Della's party, and she'll give if she wants to.24.What were the unusual messages Della got on her 53rd birthday?A.Help requests.B.Gift ideas.C.Donation offers.D. Known as nature's engineers, they tear trees down to build homes to live in and dams to raise water levels for protection from enemies. Dams also slow water's flow while blocking sediment(沉积物)that would otherwise flow downstream. The resulting wetlands often attract wildlife diversity where none had existed. There are challenges, though. Beaver dams sometimes cause flooding, and most people prefer trees alive and upright.Communities face a delicate balancing act, learning to coexist with beavers. Last winter, many people enjoying Winston Path became beaver fans as one furry family transformed Swallow Pond into an oasis for birds, frogs, turtles and deer.Yet such activity caused concern. As beavers worked, they raised water levels about five feet. The increased depth allows beavers to survive underwater if the pond ices over. But county officials were concerned about how higher water would affect the soil bank supporting Winston Path.To find a good balance between protecting the path and the beavers, the county introduced a“ beaver baffle”—a pond leveler.Beavers often rush to fill holes in their dams.Baffles stabilize water levels by creating a hidden exit for high water to escape through the dam, unnoticed by the beavers.People love the beavers but they also love the mature trees. Recently, Catherine Jones,18, organized a tree-caging event —putting wire cloth around large tree trunks to discourage beavers from biting them. It also protects people from injury due to random trees fall ing.“We cover the trees we don't want them to eat, while planting periodically others they like,"said Jones.“We need-to learn to give up a little of our wants to share the Earth's resources.”Swallow Pond's 2023 project will restore proper water depth and improve wildlife habitatwithout creating problems for the path. The balancing act continues.28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A. Where beavers' favorite surroundings are.B. What effects beavers have on their habitat.C.Why beavers are called nature's engineers.D.How beavers help attract wildlife diversity.29.Why did the beaver family's activity cause concern?A.Swallow Pond would flood often.B.Sediment would flow downstream.C. The popular path might be damaged.D. Beavers might have to live underwater.30 .What do the underlined words“beaver ba f fle”refer to in paragraph 4?A.A block to keep beavers away.B.A tool to fix holes in the dams.C.A device to maintain water level.D.A material to protect the soil bank.31. What is the theme of Swallow Pond's 2023 project?A. Biological diversity.B.Harmonious coexistence.C.Prevention of natural disasters.D.Preservation of wildlife habitat.DSome bacteria(细菌)have a superpower that scientists would love to use. These bacteria gain energy from light, just as plants do.Scientists have wanted to use cyanobacteria(蓝藻菌)to make electricity. But in previous research, they didn't survive long on artificial surfaces. Researchers have now moved them to a living surface —a mushroom. Their creation is the first mushroom to make electricity.Applied Physicist Simon Jackson and his team turned that mushroom into a mini energy farm. This bionic(生物电子的)mushroom combines 3D printing, conductive ink and bacteria to generate electricity. Its design could lead to new ways of combining nature with electronics.Like plants, cyanobacteria make their own food from sunlight, releasing electrons(电子). When enough electrons build up in one place, they can create an electric current. The researchers needed to bring a lot of these bacteria together. They decided to use 3D printing to place them precisely onto a surface.Jackson's team chose mushrooms for that surface. After all, they realized, mushrooms naturally host communities of bacteria and other microbes. Finding test subjects for their tests was easy. Jackson simply went to the grocery store and picked up white button mushrooms.Printing on those mushrooms, though, turned out to be a real challenge. 3D printers have been designed to print on flat surfaces, but mushroom caps are curved. The researchers spent months writing computer code to solve the problem. Eventually, they came up with a program to 3D print their ink onto the curved mushroom tops. The researchers printed two“inks”onto their mushrooms. One was a green ink made of cyanobacteria. They used this to make a spiral pattern on the cap. They ed a black ink made of graphene, which is great at conducting electricity. They printed this ink in a branching pattern across the mushroom top. Then it was time to shine.“Cyanobacteria are the real heroes here,”says Jackson. When his team shone light on the mushrooms, the bacteria gave out electrons. Those electrons flowed into the graphene and created an electric current.32.What was the problem in previous research?A. Cyanobacteria didn't produce electrons.B.Cyanobacteria couldn't get enough light.C.The researchers chose the wrong bacteria.D.No suitable home was made for cyanobacteria.33. Why were mushrooms finally chosen as test subjects?A.They are convenient to find.B.They can produce electric currents.C.They are where bacteria can naturally grow.D.They can be easily combined with 3D printing.34. What is the major function of the black ink in this test?A.To feed bacteria.B.To deliver electrons.C.To produce electricity.D.To reshape mushroom tops.35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A.Who are the real heroes?B. New application of 3D printingC.Nature combined with electronsD. Built over 2, 200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6, 000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 citiesin the province. In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regularfloods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region ’ s governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at thetop of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed. The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei thatwould take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention of gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 20-metre-wide canals had been carved through the mountain.Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature. Unlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.24.What are the benefits of Dujiangyan according to the first paragraph?A.Reducing flooding and watering farmland.B.Protecting the mountain and reducing the flooding.C.Watering farmland and improving water quality.D.Drying the river and supplying cities with water.25. What was the main cause of the Minjiang River’ s flooding?A. Heaving rainsB. Melting snow.C. Low river banks C. Steep mountains.26.How was Li Bing able to break through the rocks of Mount Yulei?A.By using gunpowder.B.By flooding the rocks with water.C.By applying a hearing and cooling technique.D.By breaking the rocks with hammers and spades27.Why is Dujiangyan greatly admired by scientists today?A.It preserved much of the natural river life.B. It took very little time to complete the project.C. The building techniques used were very modern.D. It had raised the living standards of the local people.CBill Gates recently predicted that online learning will make place-based colleges less significant, and five years from now, students will be able to find the best lectures in the world online. I applaud Mr. Gates. But what’ s taking us so long?As early as 1997, MIT(麻省理工)decide to post videos of all university lectures online, for free, for all people. But today, how many students have you met who mastered advanced mathematics or nuclear physics from an MIT online video? Unfortunately, the answer is not many. The problem is the poor quality of online education websites and the experience they provide to students. Those who go to the MIT website and watch courses online are surely very smart people, but it ’ s not like playing a video gameWorldsuchof Warcraftas. Only the most ardent students, those who are highly motivated, will devote themselves to studyingthese boring online videos. The real question is why er aren ’ t spending more to develop better online education platforms. Where is the Avatar of education? Think about this. The market for Hollywoodfilms per year is worth around 30 billion USD. Education in the world is a trillion-dollar-a-year market, hundreds of times bigger than Hollywood movies. Yet the most expensivedigital learning system ever built cost well under 100 million dollars.Bill Gates ’ prediction is going to happen. There is no doubt about this. But it will onlyhappen when we create high level educational content and experiences that engage andexcite more than has ever been possible in the real world.28.What has Bill Gates forecast about online learning?A.It will concentrate on physics lectures.B.It will completely replace real universities.C.It will help to make universities more successful.D.It will play an increasingly important role in education.29. What does the underlined word“ ardent” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Creative.B. Enthusiastic.C. Well-behaved.D. Experienced.30.According to the author, what is holding back the popularity of online learning?A.The lack of lectures available online.B.The high cost of access to the websites.C.The low standard of educational websites.D.The competition with online computer games.31.Why does the author mention Hollywood?A.To show that Hollywood produces many successful movies.B.To prove that education is more profitable than entertainment.C.To argue that movie directors should produce educational content.D.To urge that more money be spent developing educational websites.Persuasion is the art of convincing someone to agree with you. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos, and logos.Ethos is a speaker’ s way of convincing the audience that she is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how muchexperience or education she has in the field. After all, you’ re more likey to listen to about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman. A speaker can also createethos by convincing the audience that she is a good person. If an audience cannot trust you,you will not be able to persuade them.Pathos is a speaker’ s way of connecting with an audience’ s emotions. For example politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can savethe country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thusmaking them support him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injureddos and cats, to make the viewers feel pity. If the audience feels bad for the animals, they ill be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics, or other evidence to support your argument. Anaudience will be more likely to believe you if you have convincing data to back up yourclaims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying“ belie Although ethos, pathos, and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effectivewhen used together. Indeed, most speakers use a combination of ethos, pathos, and logsto persuade their audiences so, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial,or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for theseancient Greek tools of persuasion.32.Why does the author say persuasion is an art?A.They both entertain the audience.B.They both require great skill to achieve.C.They both demand full attention from the audience.D.They were both common topics of ancient Greek writers.33.How is a speaker able to show her ethos to the audience?A.By expressing her sympathy with the audience.B.By telling the audience about her personal preference.C.By using beautiful language to make her statements attractive.D.By showing her knowledge and experience relating to the topic..34.What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion?A.Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion.B.Each aspect has a different effect on the audience.C.Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable.D.Political leaders mostly use pathos to persuade their audience.35.
