Year of GivingYesterday I started the Year of Giving, my first day of a year﹣long journey into exploring the act of giving and the meaning of charity.I chose December 15 as the startingdate, which marked three years since my mother died from heart disease. She was one ofthe most generous people that I have ever known. She always thought of others first and certainly serves as an inspiration to me.I had a rather busy day yesterday, ironic (具有讽刺意义的) for someone who is unemployed right now.In the morning I went to the gym, and unsuccessfully got the phone call from the unemployment office for some job searching. Before I knew it, it was noon.I grabbed a quicklunch and rushed down to a meeting. On my way to Connecticut, I wondered if I would see someone that I would feel forced to give my first﹩10 to.I was running late and decided to do it afterwards. After the meeting I had about half an hour to find the first person of my Year of Giving!I decided to check out DuPont Circle.I had met a guy there named Jerry once and thought he would willing accept my10.He wasn't there, but I did see a man sitting by himself who looked really lonely, so I approached him.Now I had to figure out what I was going to say, I think I said something like, "Hi, can I sit down here? ""I would like to know if I could give you﹩10? "He asked me to repeat what I had said, I did, then he looked at me funny, got up and left.I then started walking south where I spotted a man standing by the bus stop on Connecticut Ave.He appeared to be in his 60s.I don't know what drew me to him, but I thought I would make my second attempt.I was a bit nervous and asked him which bus came by thatstop. Then I explained that I was starting a year﹣long project to give﹩10 to someone every day and that I wanted to give my $ 10 for today to him.The gentleman, I later found out that his name was Ed, responded without hesitation that he could not accept my offer and that there were many people more deserving the money than him. This was exactly one of the things that I hoped would happen.People would think of others before themselves.56.The author set the starting date on December 15 to________.A.help the charityB.remember his motherC.make an explosionD.fulfill a wish if his mum(1)In the author's first attempt to give away the money,________.A he was considered ridiculous.B he hesitated for a long time.C he was forced to donate the money.D he had no time to take action.(2)In the author's second attempt, the gentleman refused his offer because________.A he didn't need other's help.B he thought more for others.C he didn't care about money.D he wanted to get more money.(3)We can refer that the author was inspired by________.A true friendship.B his own kindness.C generousdonations. Mars on EarthDevon Islander has always been a cold and uninhabited(无人居住的) place in the Canadian Arctic.Day after day there are high winds and the temperature is below freezing. But for the first time, despite the terrible weather conditions.Devon Islander is the new home for a group of explorers from NASA.They are living here for a months in order to train and learn how to live and work on Mars. The group's members come from various backgrounds and nationalities, but they all have the same purpose: to find out how people can live on Mars in the future. They have chosen Devon Islander because the environment and landscape is similar in many ways to Mars. The surface is freezing cold and the ground is rough. However, there are some differences on Mars, where the atmosphere is poisonous to breathe, Devon Islander is easier to travel to and it has its own dangers that you won't find on Mars. For example, you might meet a hungry polar bear on Devon Islander! One thing the learn wants to develop is suitable clothing for Mars. This includes a space suit. The suit they are testing at the moment is strong enough but it's too difficult and tiring. In addition, people will need to do experiment on Mars while wearing the suit so they have to be able to move around easily. One team member, Andy Overbeeke, specializes in space suit engineering. He explains: "You have to think about what they're really going to operate in."Another part of daily life on Mars will be meals and food.Creating a new home on Mars requires a lot of food.So the big question is: can you grow plants in order tosurvive? Scientists believe that growing plants on Mars might be possible.Mars and Earth have many similarities. They both have about the same amount of dry land and a 24﹣hour day. However, the atmosphere on Mars is totally different, so Canadian scientist Alain Berinstain is attempting to grow plants in a special greenhouse that you could also build on Mars. The greenhouse needs to run 365days a year, so it uses a combination of solar energy and wind power.People living on Mars will also want their own transportation. For this, the team on Devon Island have built the"Martian Rover".It's a huge heavy vehicle that can travel over rocks and rough terrain. This kind of testing takes many days but so far the work has been valuable and effective. As a result, the whole team now believes their work is crucial and that it's possible for humans to land on the planet Mars and create a home there.Addy Overbeeke adds, "We know that it's man's destiny to go out and do space exploration. It'salways time to think about what you want to do in the future."(1)The explorers are living on Devon Island to________.A receive a training in astronomy.B set up an advanced research lab.C learnhow to live and work on Mars. D make a living in an uninhabited land.(2)To keep food supply on Mars, people should________.A create a new home.B improve the atmosphere.C build special greenhouses.D reduce the area of dry land.(3)According to the passage,we know that________.A humans may live on Mars in the future.B Martian Rover has failed to stand the test.C Mars and Devon Island have the same soil condition.D scientists have mastered the method to grow plants on Mars.19. While you may think that being smart and talented would logically make someone successful in running a business, unfortunately, this is often not the case. This problem starts back in school when the stressful"group projects"are first assigned. The smartest don't want to risk their grade in the class by dividing the work equally and hoping that art average student does his part well. They just take over and do the whole project themselves. And thus begins the smart﹣people work cycle. The smartest people do just about everything better than most everyone else until it comes to running a business. They arenot better; they are screwed.A smart person who can't stand someone else doing a job badly does everything himself. Then, he is stuck with the one﹣man band"job﹣business"and ends up not being able to grow. However, it is quite interesting and strange that some slacken are better suited to be a business leader than the"smart"people. The figured out early on to surround themselves with smart people who would do the work that they themselves don't want to do.Smart and talented people often have a gift for the unusual, complicated or different. They don't like to follow the KISS principle (keep it simple, stupid), which is required to make a business succeed.Maybe you think the global presence of McDonald's complex, but in reality, in the company, every single task is broken down into easy﹣to﹣follow steps and everything has been standardized. These successful companies have just a few smart enough people to run the majority of the tasks in a way that can't be screwed upby theiraverage employees. So, being smart or talented isn't going to help you unless you can use those smarts to figure out a way to simplify those tasks that will make a business successful. Another issue with the smart people starting businesses is thatthey often have the most to lose. The smarter you are, the more options you have available to you.You will be able to make a lot of money in various fields and have room in your career to become promoted. This means that when you start a business, you have a lot more to risk than those who are not equally smart. This is often referred to as the"golden handcuffs"dilemma. So, don't be surprised when the person"MOST Likely to Succeed"from high school ends up as an employee and it is one average student that finds success in his or her own business.(1)In group work, smart students often take over the whole project because they believe________.A the work is not divided equally.B they can perform better than others.C the group projects are too stressful.D average students are unwilling to participate.(2)McDonald's is used as an example to prove that________.A a business calls for smart people's talent.B average employees can perform complex tasks.C smart people are important for a successful business.D simplified tasks are required for the success of a business.(3)The underlined expression in Paragraph 5refers to the situation where smart people________.A have fewer options in a company.B risk more when starting business.C are unwilling to put money to a business.D can have a good income in many different fields.(4)What is the best title for the passage?________A Potentials for Success.B Bases for Business.C The Ordinary Achieve Bigger Success?.D Talent Means Successful Business?.20. We know that hugs make us feel easy inside. And this feeling, it turns out, could actually ________ stress and protect r the immune (免疫) system, according to a new research from Carnegie Mellon University. It's a well﹣known fact that stress can weaken the immune system. In this study, the researchers sought to determine whether hugs﹣﹣﹣﹣like social support more broadly﹣﹣﹣﹣could protect individuals from the increased sensitivity to illness brought on by the particular stress that come with interpersonal conflict."We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression and anxiety, "the study's lead author, psychologist Dr.Sheldon Cohen, said in a statement."We tested whether awareness of social support is equally effective in protecting us from sensitivity to infection caused by stress and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feeling of support and thus protect a person against infection."In the experiment, over 400 healthy adults filled out a questionnaire about their perceived (感知) social support and also participated in a nightly phone interview for two weeks. They were asked the frequency they engaged in interpersonal conflicts and received bugs that day. Then, the researchers exposed the participants to a common cold virus, and monitored them to assess signs of infection. They found that both perceived social support and more frequent hugs reduced the risk of infection associated with experiencing interpersonal conflict.Regardless of whether or not they experienced social conflicts, infected participants with greater perceived social support and more frequent hugs had less severe illness symptoms."This suggests that being hugged by a trusted person may act as an effective means of conveying support and that increasing the frequency of hugs might be an effective means of reducing the effects of stress, "Cohen said."The apparent protective effect of hugs may result from the physical contact itself or hugging being a behavioral indicator of support and closeness.Either way, those who receive morehugs are somewhat more protected from infection."If you need any more reason to go wrap your arms around someone special, considerthis: hugs also lower blood pressure, reduce fearsome around death and dying, improveheart health and decrease feeling of loneliness.(1)In Paragraph 1,the underlined words"wand off"can be replaced by________.A produce B. C prevent D.(2)Dr.Sheldon Cohen's experiment shows that________.A hugs can hide serious illness symptoms.B social conflicts can monitor signs of infection.C social support can reduce the risk of having a cold.D depression and anxiety result from less social support.(3)The passage aims to convey that________.A hugs can have protective effects.B social support can surediseases. C interpersonal conflicts cause infections. D stress can weaken our immune system.(4)The passage is most likely to be found in________.A a social science magazine.B a commercial brochure.C a medicalreport. D an academic essay.第二节(共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出恩给你填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.21.Make a Joke of ItI'm working on my Happiness Project, and you could have one, too!Everyone's project will look different, but it's the rare person who can't benefit.Join in﹣﹣﹣﹣no need to catch up,just jump in right now.Everyone says, and it's true, that one of the most effective ways to handle negative emotions is to lighten up.(1)_______If you're angry, joke around.Easier said than done, however.I had a chance to keep my resolution to"make a joke of it"last night. My husband finally took on the job of dealing with my daughter's adventure in orthodontia(牙齿矫正术).The orthodontist's office is right around the Corner from his office, and he agreed that he'd schedulethe appointments and take her. This was GREAT!On our flight to Kansas City for the holidays, the Big Girl lost her"functional appliance"which she wears in her mouth.(2)_______We got back home a week later, andthe Big Man didn't call to make an appointment!Days went by.I reminded him periodically, but nothing happened.(3)_______Last night,I stamped into our bedroom ready to turn on my anger at full volume."This really matters, this is important, she's growing now, what's the point,it's expensive, you promised you'd do it."Etc.Then I thought,"Make a joke of it."So I went over, put my arm around the Big Man,and said nicely,"You know what?If you don't call the orthodontist's tomorrow,I'm going to be very angry.I'm not threatening, just giving you fair warning."And I laughed while I said it."I know,I know!"he said, shaking his head."I'll send myself an Email right now."And he did.(4)_______I'm not sure if making a joke of it was more effective than getting angry, but I don't think it was less effective.I was happier about it,and the Big Man was happier about it.(5)_______It's easy to say"make a joke of it",but it's hard to do when you're feeling angry, scared, bored,or upset.Have you found a way to get yourself to make a joke?A.And today he madethe appointment.B.If things are sad,try to find a reason to laugh.C.We looked everywhere on the plane; it was gone.D.If you're happy and you know it,clap your hands.E.You'd think flight rage is a uniquely Chinese problem.F.And it was a much nicer way to havethat unpleasant exchange.G.Whenever I thought about this delay,I became extremely annoyed. 提示词:植物园botanical gardenRecently,I have conducted a survey on"My Favorite Spring Outing Spot".________ ________________________.2015年北京市海淀区高考英语二模试卷答案1. My best friend Betty had a piano. But Betty hardly played it at all. She would rather play hide-and-seek. It didn’t seem fair. One day my mother came to pick me up from Betty’s house. “Watch this!” I told her. Then I ran to play a song I had learned that morning. I was so proud of what I’d learned. “That’s nice, Jenny,”she said. “But we can’t afford a piano.”When I turned six, my mother bought me a recorder(直笛). The problem was that I didn’t love the recorder. When I played the recorder, I didn’t feel anything specialinside. I asked my mother if we could have a pi ano, “We still can’t afford one,” she said. “One day, I promise.”In the sixth grade, my mother traded in the recorder for a real clarinet(黑管). I liked the clarinet more, but it still wasn’t a piano. It wasn’t the music that was inside of me.One day, when I was in the seventh grade, my mother cut an ad out of the newspaper. We drove to a stranger’s home in Providence, Rhode Island. The woman had a beautiful, dark wood piano from Russia. It was called an upright piano because it was tall. It was s o shiny that it looked like it was wet. “We’ll take it,” my mother said. “It has a nice sound.”After that, I played the piano every single day. When I left for school in the morning, I would leave the sheet music open on the piano. When I got home, I would walk straight to the piano and sit down and start playing the sheet music. I even played if I stayed home sick. I had finally found the music inside of me.Do you struggle with music? Have you been given an instrument to play, but you just can’t play it? Maybe you think you’re just no good or that you don’t have any musical talent. Don’t get discouraged. It’s not true! We all have music inside of us, even if it’s just what we listen to. Now it’s up to you to find the right way to set that music free.(1)What did Jenny get when she was six?A.A clarinetB.A recorderC.A violinD.A guitar(2)How did Jenny get her piano?A.Betty gave it to her.B.She traded in the clarinet for it.C.She got it from her uncle.D.Her mother bought it from a stranger.(3)Which of the following is TRUE?A.Betty was more interested in playing the piano.B.An old woman sent Jenny a clarinet from Russia.C.Jenny enjoyed playing music with the right instrument.D.Jenny’s mother borrowed a recorder in her seventh grade.(4)What is the passage mainly about?A.How Jenny found the music inside of her.B.What benefits Jenny got from making music.C.How Jenny learned to play musical instruments.D.What trouble Jenny had taking up music as a hobby.14.CBeing busy can become a way of life. Our lives are always filled with emails and text messages. They make us feel wanted and important, but in a tiring and empty way. Being busy has a dangerous allure(诱惑). If you are busy all the time, it’s hard to sit quietly with your thoughts or to really feel what you’re feeling. Why not let everything become a choice --- how we spend time who we reply to and how much or little we write? Many of us are busy because our self-worth goes up when people make demands on our time. Why don’t we free ourselves from needing, or even wanting? Why don’t we make the best use of the time and space to be productive in a way that it best serve us? That may be consciously(主动地) keeping ourselves not busy. In fact many great discoveries were made by people who built white space into their day.Imagine asking “How are you?” to one of the most successful people you know life Warren Buffet. I’ve never heard anyone at that level answer “busy” though most people believe they are. What are they doing differently?First, they aim to project an image that things are under control. Second, they actually have things under control. They’ve had excellent st aff, implemented(实施)thoughtful processes and they spend time only on critical tasks that require their attention. They make high-level strategic decision with a large effect. It’s time to end the glory of being busy and spend time setting up pro cesses that make sense, rather than simply working more hours. To do this, you need to change our way of thinking. It’s cool to say you’re busy, but it’s better to be busy helping someone carry a stroller up the subway stairs or busy finishing a book. How to free us from the trend of being busy? Start with small step. For one day, be mindful of every daily activity. Consider each thing a choice and decide proactively(预先) if it’s necessary or simply a habit you can get rid of or do in half the time. Next, stop saying how busy you are. Then, figure out what you want to achieve with your day and begin doing it. Put your time and energy where you want it to be.(1)What are any of us busy doing every day?A.Sitting quietly and think actively.B.Meeting people’s demands on our time.C.Making great discoveries.D.Taking high-level decisions.(2)Why don’t successful people like Warren Buffet answer “busy”?A.Because they value working abilities and attitude.B.Because they focus on attracting excellent workers.C.Because they pay more attention to learning management.D.Because they think well and spend more time on critical tasks.(3)The writer probably agrees that we should _______.A.stop considering each thing a choiceB.work more hours to achieve our goalsC.answer emails and messages as soon as possibleD.be mindful where we want our time and energy to be(4)What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?A.To advise us to be freed from the trend of being busy.B.To warn us about the danger of leading a busy life.C.To show us ways to feel good about being busy.D.To tell us how to fit into the busy modern life.15.DAll the time you spent memorizing multiplicationtables(乘法表) may have made you a bettermathematician, according to a new study. A team ofscientists from Stanford University, in California, haveshown how the brain reorganizes itself as kids learnmath. After a certain amount of time spent practicingmath, kids can put away the calculator(计算器). They don’t even need to count on their fingers. They simply know the answers to subtraction ( - ), addition ( + ), and multiplication ( x ) facts. The quicker kids can recall basic math facts, the easier it is for them to solve more difficult math problems. The Stanford University researchers observed (观察) the brain activity of 28 students, ag es 7 to 9, for the study. They took scans of the students’ brains as the students solved math calculations without the help of a calculator, pen or paper. A calculation --- three plus four equals seven, for example --- flashed on a screen. The students pushed a button to say if the answer was right or wrong. The scientists also recorded the response speed, and what parts of the brain became active as the kids pushed the button. These observations showed a process called fact retrieval. Rather than using their fingers to count, or scrawling out equations (列算式)on a piece of paper, the students pulled the answers from memory. It’s as if the answers to basic subtraction, addition, and multiplication problems are kept in a long-term storage part in the brain. The storage part was built from repetition. “Experience really does matter,” said Dr. Kathy Mann Koepeke of the National Institutes of Health.Children make the change from counting to fact retrieval when they are 8 to 9 yearsold, the study says. This is the time when most students are learning basic addition and subtraction. When kids have basic math facts memorized, the brain has more free space to learn more difficult math. This process has benefits for the future. The study showed, as kids got older, their answers relied more on memory and became quicker and more correct. Less brain activity was involved in counting. Some children make this change quicker than others.Scientists hope to use this research to develop new strategies (策略) to help kids learn math at all levels. One strategy the study suggests is for students to test themselves in different orders --- solving five times three before five times two, for example. Mixing up the order keeps the brain active. Keep these trainings up, and you may be a math whiz in no time.(1)In the study, kids put away calculators because they can _____.A.use calculators wellB.scrawl out equationsC.recall basic math factsD.count on their fingers(2)The process of “fact retrieval” in Paragraph 4 probably means _____.A.picking out results by working together with their partnersB.trying out ways of dealing with problems by attending trainingC.finding out answers based on practicing carefully and patientlyD.working out problems according to what they have remembered(3)What can we know from the study?A.Kids need to practice using calculators to keep their brains active.B.Math learners should change to counting practice at the age of 8 to 9.Training by mixing up the order of multiplication tables can help learn math better. D.Less brain activity may be involved in solving difficult problems when kids get older.(4)What is the best title of the passage?A.Math from MemorB.Strategy DevelopmentC.Brain ReorganizationD.Training by Repetition五选五16.Great white sharks have become well known in a badway, for being scary, 1 . however, you are morelikely to be hit by lightning than attacked by a great wh iteshark. One reason why people don’t like great white sharks isthat they are huge. They grow to be nearly 21 feet long andcan weigh up to 5,000 pounds. That is about two cars long! But the size is not typical. Most great whites are smaller, about 10 to 15 feetlong. 2 .Great whites are called apex predators(捕食者) because they are at the top of the food chain. They have no predators and aren’t that picky about what they eat. Great whites are known to eat fish, squid, other sharks, otters, turtles, dolphins, whales, seals, and sea lions. 3 .Great whites also eat carrion, which is the remains of dead animals floating(漂浮) in the water. 4 . They have 3,000 teeth, and each is up to 3 inches long! Their very sharp teeth are shaped like triangles and have rough edges that tear into things. Greats whites don’t even chew their food. They just swallow it down. 5 .But, like other sharks, great whites don’t intentionally (主动地) eat or attack humans. So swim without fear.A.That’s still longer than one car, thoughB.Those last two kinds are their favourite food.Movies and popular stories make them scaryD.A big meal can satisfy a great white shark for about two months.E.Another reason why people fear great whites is their frightening teeth任务型阅读17.In April 2007, a 16-year-old boy named Charlie McDonnell was bored, so he used his laptop and webcam to make his first video, and posted it on You Tube under the name Charlieissocoollike. I chose December 15 as the starting date, which marked three years since my mother died from heart disease. She was one of the most generous people that I have ever known. She always thought of others first and certainly serves as an inspiration to me.I had a rather busy day yesterday, ironic (具有讽刺意义的) for someone who is unemployed right now. In the morning I went to the gym, and unsuccessfully got the phone call from the unemployment office for some job searching. Before Iknew it, it was noon. I grabbed a quick lunch and rushed down to a meeting. On my way to Connecticut, I wondered if I would see someone that I would feel forced to give my first $ 10 to. I was running late and decided to do it afterwards. After the meeting I had about half an hour to find the first person of my Year of Giving! I decided to check out DuPont Circle. I had met a guy there named Jerry once and thought h e would willing accept my $ 10. He wasn’t there, but I did see a man sitting by himself who looked really lonely, so I approached him. Now I had to figure out what I was going to say, I think I said something like, ―Hi, can I sit down here?‖ ―I would like to know if I could give you $ 10?‖ He asked me to repeat what I had said, I did, then he looked at me funny, got up and left.I then started walking south where I spotted a man standing by the bus stop on Connecticut Ave. He appeared to be in his 60s. I do n’t know what drew me to him, but I thought I would make my second attempt. I was a bit nervous and asked him which bus came by that stop. Then I explained that I was starting a year-long project to give $ 10 to someone every day and that I wanted to give my $ 10 for today to him. The gentleman, Ilater found out that his name was Ed, responded without hesitation that he could not accept my offer and that there were many people more deserving the money than him. This was exactly one of the things that I hoped would happen. People would think of others before themselves.56. The author set the starting date on December 15 to ____.A.help the charityB. remember his motherC. make an explosionD. fulfill a wish if his mum57. In the author’s first attempt to gi ve away the money, ____.A. he was considered ridiculousB. he hesitated for a long timeC. he was forced to donate the moneyD. he had no time to take action58. In the author’s second attempt, the gentleman refused his offer because ____.A. he didn’t need other’s helpB. he thought more for othersC. he didn’t care about moneyD. he wanted to get more money59. We can refer that the author was inspired by ____.A. true friendshipB. his own kindnessC. generous donationsD. human’s good natureB Mars on EarthDevon Islander has always been a cold and uninhabited(无人居住的) place in the Canadian Arctic. Day after day there are high winds and the temperature is below freezing. But for the first time, despite the terrible weatherconditions .Devon Islander is the new home for a group of explorers from NASA. They are living here for a months in order to train and learn how to live and work on Mars. The group’s members come from various backgrounds and nationalities, but they all have the same purpose: to find out how people can live on Mars in the future. They have chosen Devon Islander because the environment and landscape is similar in many ways to Mars. The surface is freezing cold and the ground is rough. However, there are some differences on Mars, where the atmosphere is poisonous to breathe, Devon Islander is easier to travel to and it has its own dangers that you won’t find on Mars. For example, you might meet a hungry polar bear on Devon Islander! One thing the learn wants to develop is suitable clothing for Mars. This includes a space suit. The suit they are testing at the moment is strong enough but it’s too difficult and tiring. In addition, people will need to do experiment on Mars while wearing the suit so they have to be able to move around easily. One team member,Andy Overbeeke, specializes in space suit engineering. He explains: ―You have to think about what they’re really going to operate in.‖Another part of daily life on Mars will be meals and food. Creating a new home on Mars requires a lot of food. So the big question is: can you grow plants in order to survive? Scientists believe that growing plants on Mars might be possible. Mars and Earth have many similarities. They both have about the same amount of dry land and a 24-hour day. However, the atmosphere on Mars is totally different, so Canadian scientist Alain Berinstain is attempting to growplants in a special greenhouse that you could also build on Mars. The greenhouse needs to run 365 days a year, so it uses a combination of solar energy and wind power.People living on Mars will also want their own transportation. For this, the team on Devon Island have built the ―Martian Rover‖. It’s a huge heavy vehicle that can travel over rocks and rough terrain. This kind of testing takes many days but so far the work has been valuable and effective. As a result, the whole team now believes their work is crucial and that it’s possible for humans to land on the planet Mars and create a home there. Addy Overbeeke adds, ―We know that it’s man’s destiny to go out and do space exploration. It’s always time to think about what you want to do in the future.‖60. The explorers are living on Devon Island to ____.A. receive a training in astronomyB. set up an advanced research labC. learn how to live and work on MarsD. make a living in an uninhabited land61. To keep food supply on Mars, people should ____.A. create a new homeB. improve the atmosphereC. build special greenhousesD. reduce the area of dry land62. According to the passage, we know that ____.A. humans may live on Mars in the futureB. Martian Rover has failed to stand the testC. Mars and Devon Island have the same soil conditionD. scientists have mastered the method to grow plants on MarsC)While you may think that being smart and talented would logically make someone successful in running a business, unfortunately, this is often not the case. This problem starts back in school when the stressful ―group projects‖ are first assigned .The smartest don’t want to risk their grade in the class by dividing the work equally and hoping that art average student does his part well. They just take over and do the whole project themselves. And thus begins the smart-people work cycle. The smartest people do just about everything better than most everyone else until it comes to running a business. They are not better; they are screwed. A smart person who can’t stand someone else doing a job badly does everything himself. Then, he is stuck with the one-man band ―job-business‖ and ends up not being able to grow. However, it is quite interesting and strange that some slacken are better suited to be a business leader than the ―smart‖ people. The figured out early on to surround themselves with smart people who would do the work that they themselves don’t want to d o.Smart and talented people often have a gift for the unusual, complicated or different. They don’t like to follow the KISS principle (keep it simple, stupid), which is required to make a business succeed. Maybe you think the global presence of McDonald’s complex, but in reality, in the company, every single task is broken down into easy-to-follow steps and everything has been standardized. These successful companies have just a few smart enough people to run the majority of the tasks in a way that can’t b e screwed up by their average employees. So, being smart or talented isn’t going to help you unless you can use those smarts to figure out a way to simplify those tasks that will make a business successful.Another issue with the smart people starting businesses is that they often have the most to lose. The smarter you are, the more options you have available to you. You will be able to make a lot of money in various fields and have room in your career to become promoted. This means that when you start a business, you have a lot more to risk than those who are not equally smart. This is often referred to as the―golden handcuffs‖dilemma. So, don’t be surprised when the person ―MOST Likely to Succeed‖ from high school ends up as an employee and it is one average student that finds success in his or her own business.63. In group work, smart students often take over the whole project because they believe ____.A. the work is not divided equallyB. they can perform better than othersC. the group projects are too stressfulD. average students are unwilling to participate64. McDonald’s is used as an example to prove that ____.A. a business calls for smart people’s talentB. average employees can perform complex tasksC. smart people are important for a successful businessD. simplified tasks are required for the success of a business65. The underlined expression in Paragraph 5 refers to the situation where smart people ____.A. have fewer options in a companyB. risk more when starting businessC. are unwilling to put money to a businessD. can have a good income in many different fields66. What is the best title for the passage?A. Potentials for SuccessB. Bases for BusinessC. The Ordinary Achieve Bigger Success?D. Talent Means Successful Business?D)We know that hugs make us feel easy inside. And this feeling, it turns out, could actually ward off stress and protect r the immune (免疫) system, according to a new research from Carnegie Mellon University. It’s a well-known fact that stress can weaken the immune system. In this study, the researchers sought to determine whether hugs----like social support more broadly ----could protect individuals from the increased sensitivity to illness brought on by the particular stress that come with interpersonal conflict.―We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression an d anxiety, ―the study’s lead author, psychologist Dr. Sheldon Cohen , said in a statement. ―We tested whether awareness of social support is equally effective in protecting us from sensitivity to infection caused by stress and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feeling of support and thus protect a person against infection.‖In the experiment , over 400 healthy adults filled out a questionnaire about their perceived (感知) social support and also participated in a nightly phone interview for two weeks . They were asked the frequency they engaged in interpersonal conflicts and received bugs that day. Then, the researchers exposed the participants to a common cold virus, and monitored them to assess signs of infection. They found that both perceived social support and more frequent hugs reduced the risk of infection associated with experiencing interpersonal conflict. Regardless of whether or not they experienced social conflicts, infected participants with greater perceived social support and more frequent hugs had less severe illness symptoms.&n bsp; ―This suggests that being hugged by a trusted person may act as an effective means of conveying support and that increasing the frequency of hugs might be an effective means of reducing th e effects of stress,‖ Cohen said. ―The apparent protective effect of hugs may result from the physical contact itself or hugging being a behavioral indicator of support and closeness. Either way, those who receive more hugs are somewhat more protected from infection.‖If you need any more reason to go wrap your arms around someone special, consider this: hugs also lower blood pressure, reduce fearsome around death and dying, improve heart health and decrease feeling of loneliness.67. In Paragraph 1, the un derlined words ―wand off ―can be replaced by ____.A. produceB. increaseC. preventD. support68. Dr. Sheldon Cohen’s experiment shows that ____.A. hugs can hide serious illness symptomsB. social conflicts can monitor signs of infectionC. social support can reduce the risk of having a coldD. depression and anxiety result from less social support69. The passage aims to convey that ____.A. hugs can have protective effectsB. social support can sure diseasesC. interpersonal conflicts cause infectionsD. stress can weaken our immune system70. Everyone’s project will look different, but it’s the rare person who can’t benefit. Join in----no need to catch up, just jump in right now.Everyone says, and it’s true, that one of the most effective ways to handle ne gative emotions is to lighten up. __71__If you’re angry, joke around. Easier said than done, however.I had a chance to keep my resolution to ―make a joke of it‖ last night. My husband finally took on the job of dealing with my daughter’s adventure in ortho dontia(牙齿矫正术). The orthodontist’s office is right around the Corner from his office, and he agreed that he’d schedule the appointments and take her. This was GREAT! On our flight to Kansas City for the holidays, the Big Girl lost her ―functional appliance‖which she wears in her mouth. __72__We got back home a week later, and the Big Man didn’t call to make an appointment! Days went by. I reminded him periodically, but nothing happened.__73__Last night, I stamped into our bedroom ready to turn on my anger a t full volume. ―This really matters, this is important, she’s growing now, what’s the point, it’s expensive, you promised you’d do it.‖ Etc. Then I thought, ―Make a joke of it.‖So I went over, put my arm around the Big Man, and said nicely, ―You know what? If you don’t call the orthodontist’s tomorrow, I’m going to be very angry. I’m not threatening, just giving you fair warning.‖ And I laughed while I said it.―I know, I know!‖ he said, shaking his head. ―I’ll send myself an Email right now.‖ And he did. __74__I’m not sure if making a joke of it was more effective than getting angry, but I don’t think it was less effective. I was happier about it, and the Big Man was happier about it. __75__It’s easy to say ―make a joke of it‖, but it’s hard to do when you’re feeling angry, scared, bored, or upset. Have you found a way to get yourself to make a joke?A. And today he made the appointment.B. If things are sad, try to find a reason to laugh.C. We looked everywhere on the plane; it was gone.D. Hi, Tony!
I'm glad that you will come to Beijing soon. There are lots of places of interest in Beijing. In order to experience traditional Chinese culture better, I do recommend Beijing Hutong tour.
First, we're going to go sightseeing along the lanes in Hutong. The houses in Hutong are traditional, such as Siheyuan. From them, you can imagine how people used to live. Of course you can stop anywhere you like and it is interesting to take pictures or have a close look. Second, we are going to pay visits to a Hutong family. We can have lunch there and have a short talk with the local residents, which can help you learn about many stories of the past. We can not only appreciate the dramatic changes that Hutong has undergone, but also see evidence of the history of Beijing, experience the old way of life and experience traditional Beijing culture.
In a word, Hutongs are the homes of common people in the past. It is easy to know how people lived and had fun in the old days. So it is a good choice to learn about traditional Chinese culture.
I'm looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua。
