Holly Cooke wasn't a fan of weekends.Whenever Friday rolled around,it was a reminder that she had no one to spend her spare time with.
“I was lonely,”said Cooke, who’re located from Stoke-on-Trent—a city in central England—to London when she was22.“I moved here knowing no one.”She had high hopes of going to restaurants, bars and the theater as she had done before, but she didn't want to do those activities alone.“I was desiring community: people who wanted to hang out and have fun,”said Cooke,now26.
She grew so eager for company, she said, she eventually found herself Googling:“How to make friends in London.”The search proved futile, though she found a few other women who were also lonely in London on some social media apps.
Cooke decided to create a Facebook group called“The London Lonely Girls Club,”and invited the people she connected with on the apps to join. She then asked everyone to meet for brunch(早午餐).“It was
so difficult,”she said, adding that she asked a friend from out of town to come in for the brunch,in case no one else showed up.“Saying that you're lonely and you don't have people around, admitting to that was really scary.”
Cooke was pleasantly surprised when five women showed up and they all got along well. This proved she was not alone in her loneliness, and that she could help others in the same situation. She decided to start planning meetups every few weeks, and word slowly spread about the Facebook group. Now,five years later, the London Lonely Girls Club has more than35,000members.
Cooke said she lost count of how many women have made lasting friendships through her group.“It's beautiful and rewarding, and it's the reason I've carried on,”she said.“As long as there is a need,we will be here.”

It’s often said that we human beings can dream in a foreign language.Could dreaming in a foreign language improve our memory?Does dreaming in a foreign language mean we are making progress in learning that language?
Before we look at multilingual(多语言)dreams, first we need to look at sleep. The connection between sleep and language can be applied to how we learn any language, including our native language.Even adults still learn about one new word every two days in their first language. But,if we are going to remember that
new word better, what matters is that we need to connect it with what we have learned. And in order to do that,we“need to have some sleep”,says Gareth Gaskell,a professor at the University of York.
It’s during sleep that the integration(整合)of old and new knowledge happens. At might, one part of our brain—the hippocampus—takes whatever new information it receives during the day and passes it on to other parts of the brain to be stored. The role that dreams play in this night-time learning process is still being studied, but“it’s entirely possible that during multilingual dreams, the brain is trying to connect the two languages”,says Marc,a researcher at a university in Bern,Switzerland.
So having multilingual dreams could mean that our brain is trying to remember a new word or phrase. However,it could also have an emotional significance.Danuta,a professor of psycholinguistics at the University of Silesia in Poland, suggests that multilingual dreams can express“fears or wishes”around learning a foreign language, including the wish to be a local speaker or to be accepted within a certain community.
We clearly still have a lot to learn about multilingual dreams, but one thing seems certain:if you’re trying to learn a new language, you can sleep on it.
28.Why does the author mention questions in paragraph1?
A.To compare different ideas.
B.B.To introduce the main topic.
C.To present different types of dreams.

D.They help to clear up the useless information.
31.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A novel.

Scientists say they have developed a system that uses machine learning to know when and where lightning will strike.Researchers report the system is able to tell that lightning strikes up to30minutes before they happen within a30-kilometer area.
Lightning carries an extremely powerful electrical charge(电荷),and it can be destructive and deadly. European researchers have estimated that between6,000and24,000people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. For this reason, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments uses a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.
The model was created with data collected over a12-year period from12Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data was placed into a unique machine learning algorithm(算法),which compared it to records of lightning strikes.Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
The researchers test-ran the system several times. They found that the system made predictions that proved correct almost80percent of the time.“It can now be used anywhere,”the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said in a statement.
The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection program. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project. Scientists working on the project are experimenting with a laser technology that could someday control lightning activity, taking lightning charges from clouds to the ground. They hope that such technology can one day be used as protection against lightning strikes.Possible uses could be at stations, airports or places where large crowds gather.
32.Why was the system developed?
A.To protect people from lightning.
B.To show the power of lightning.
C.To keep track of lightning deaths.
D.To meet kids’curiosity about lightning.
33.What is special about the system?
A.It was based on a number of samples worldwide.
B.It adopted a different machine learning algorithm.
C.It used an effective method of collecting data.
D.It required low cost of predicting lightning.
34.What will the researchers do next with the laser technology?
A.Monitor lightning activity.
B.Prevent the happening of lightning.
C.Produce electricity with lightning.
D.Direct energy from lightning.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A System of Controlling Lightning.
B.A Theory of Explaining Lightning.
C.A Method of Predicting Lightning.
D.A Model of Creating Lightning.

1.Evacuate on foot if possible.
Bridges and roads might be damaged or blocked after an earthquake.Whether there is an official tsunami warning or you live in a tsunami hazard zone and an earthquake just happened, immediately start moving on foot.37This helps you avoid getting stuck in a car in a dangerous location.
2.38
In some cases, you might not have time to evacuate. If you don't have time to get away,go up to a third floor or higher in a strong building.Even better, try to get on the roof of the tallest, strongest building you can find.If you're right on the coast, there might be a tall tsunami evacuation tower nearby.Look for evacuation route signs and follow them to the tower, then climb to the top.
3.Grab something floating if you're in the water.
This can help keep you safe if you get caught by a tsunami's waves.39Grab the object and hold on tightly while you get carried by the waves.
4.40
Tsunami activity can continue for up to8hours or longer.Stay away from the coast and on high ground for this period to play it safe.Listen to announcements from officials and only move when they say it's safe to do so.
You may be stressed out and worried about loved ones, but you must stay where you are and try to remain calm.Don't put your life at risk to try to meet up with someone in another area.
A.Look for a boat to stay on.
B.Walk or run towards safety quickly.
C.Stay in your safe spot for at least8hours.
D.Climb to the top of a building if you are trapped.

I have already forgotten the name of an old lady who was a customer on my paper-delivery route when I was a twelve-year-old boy.Yet it seems like just yesterday that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I can only hope to pass on to someone else someday.
On a mindless Saturday afternoon,a friend and I were throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady’s house. We just wanted to observe how the rocks changed to missiles(导弹)as they rolled to the roof’s edge and shot out into her yard.
I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however,so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window on the old lady’s back door.At the sound of broken glass,we took off from the old lady’s yard faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof.
I was too much scared! However,a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered,I started to feel guilty. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to act comfortable in her presence.
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the ten dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window.
Paragraph1:
I put the money in an envelope with a letter in it.
_______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2:
The next day, after receiving the paper, she thanked me and said,“I have something for you.”

第四部分书面表达
第一节
I always felt anxious and stressful at senior high school at first because I was afraid of being left behind.
I was worried about so many things that I couldn’t sleep well and focus on my study.
Then, I read a book called “Who Moved Your Cheese” which made me realize that making changes can make a difference to life. Instead of just worrying about my study, I would make a schedule for my study and finish the to-do list. Rather than being anxious the whole day, I would do some exercises regularly and listen to music to relieve my stress and tiredness after studying, which also helped me feel more energetic.
Now, I stopped feeling upset about something new. Instead, I would also always remind myself to smile as often as possible and stay positive about everything that is going to happen.
第二节
1.I put the money in an envelope with a letter in it. I explained in the letter that I was terribly sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the ten dollars would cover the cost of repairing it. Then I sneaked up to the old lady’s house and put the envelope through the letter slot in her door. At that time, I felt a great sense of relief and I couldn’t wait for the freedom of, once again, looking straight into the old lady’s eyes.
The next day, after receiving the paper, she thanked me and said, “I have something for you.” It was a bag of cookies. I thanked her and ate the cookies as I continued my route. After several cookies, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was shocked. Inside was the 10 dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you.” She knew it was me. But instead of blaming and punishing me, she chose to forgive me. Even so many years later, she is still deeply engraved in my mind, who taught me a valuable lesson in my life.。
