We inquired about difficulties in respect of each of the four skills. Answers offered some variety, but the overall trend was that – speed was a problem in listening. Slow regular English was not difficult but actual native speech was seen as hard to follow; vocabulary was a problem in reading; confidence was a problem in speaking; and grammar was a problem in writing, leading to many errors.

Writing a questionnaire and report about learning English
1 Work in groups of three or four. You will write a questionnaire about students' experiences of learning English. Begin by discussing your own experiences.
We tried to create a profile of our subjects’ self-image. They appear to see themselves as rather nervous, fairly slow but reasonably happy, motivated learners of English.

9 What advice would you give to a new learner of English?
We asked subjects to suggest good advice for new learners of English. A common theme was the need to go beyond the textbook and watch films, listen to songs, read books and newspapers and seek opportunities to practice using the language outside the classroom. The Chair lady of the English Club recommended joining the college English society, which we are sure is good advice.
