A
I started working with my hands at a young age. The youngest of five brothers, I took on the role as a “maintenance (维修) man” at an early age for our family’s small grocery store. Often my dad wouldn’t give me a clear idea of how something shouldbe done, so I just had to figure it out by researching or through trial and error.
Fast forward to 2016 and those problem-solving skills would become the focus of Tippecanoe High School’s Homebuilding class. I knew I wanted to teach the students skills that went beyond just being able to hammer nails or cut pieces of two-by-fours. The problem was that we didn’t have the resources at the time to do much else. The idea of attracting some type of funding seemed very important. Designing, building and selling a tiny house on wheels seemed like the perfect project to accomplishthe task. I reached out to a number of local businesses and most of them responded with the greatest support for what x k w we were doing.
This year we added a new element to the program. Through one of our partners, we were able to connect with the nonprofit Veteran’s Ananda Incorporated. Students in the Homebuilding class are leading the design and production of micro houses to be donated to this organization. The new partnership gives the students another focus to consider when designing and building the houses.
There has been no shortage of students since our first year. Three years ago we had 41 students, the next 191, and this year it was limited to just over 160 students so we could have a safe and manageable classroom environment. The number of girls taking the class has risen steadily over the last few years as well. This class offers something for everyone and the skills are universal.
1. How can we describe the young author?

B. He did a lot of research in the lab.

D. He learnt about maintenance from his father.
2. What do the underlined words “the task” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Getting some financial support.
B. Selling a tiny house on wheels.
C. Reaching out to many local businesses.
D. Offering the students some problem-solving skills.
3. What can be inferred about the Homebuilding class from the last paragraph?
A. Its size needs increasing.
B. Itis popular with the students.
C. It has caused some safety concerns.
D. Its classroom environment is hard to manage.
B
After years of releasing e-readers that compete directly with Amazon’s Kindle, Rakuten Kobo’s latest device offers something totally different: theability to draw and write directly on the screen.
With a large 10.3-inch E-ink display, the Kobo Elipsa looks more like an electronic clipboard than the standard paperpack-sized e-reader. Although the ability to write on the screen is no big deal — especially given its high price tag of $ 600 — the overall package is impressively functional.
In terms of reading, the Elipsa packs just about everything you’d expect in a Kobo. You can purchase and download books from the store, read web articles you’ve saved online via Pocket, and connect to your local library to borrow e-books and magazines. It’s known that Kindle basically requires you to buy books from Amazon. Unlike Kindles, Kobos are pretty open with the formats they support; you can connect the Elipsa to a computer and transfer over any PDF books you have bought or downloaded from stores like Booktopia or Google Books.
You can fill your virtual notepads with notes using brush and pen types, and export them as PDFs or images to a PC. There’s also an “advanced” notebook that can turn your writing into typed and editable text for exporting to Microsoft Word format. You can also write directly onto documents themselves, with all your word circling and underlining saved as you go to review later. This is especially handy when it comes to PDFs, as changes you make are synced(同步)automatically when you have Wi-Fi, so you can move between your Elipsa, PC and phone and keep your notes.
With all that said, we can see it really appealing to e-reader fans who also tend to do a lot of work on paper. If you ever print things out to mark them up, fill notepads with writing or drawing that you later have to transcribe or scan, or just wish you could write all over your library books, this could be the device for you.
4. Which of the following best describes the Elipsa?
A. Automatic.
B. Traditional.
C. Useful.
D. Standard.
5. How is a Kobo different from a Kindle in reading?
A. A Kindle has a larger screen.
B. A Kindle can support more formats.
C. A Kobo supports books from various sources.
D. A Kobo should be connected to local libraries.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about Kobos?
A Their function in syncing. B. Their function in typing.
C. Their function in writing.
D. Their function in reading.
7. In which section of a newspaper can the text probably be found?
A. Education.
B. Technology.
C. Lifestyle.
D. Business.

I was in the second year of my Ph. D. program when a colleague asked what I would do if I had an extra hour every day. Without much consideration, I said I would use it to help others. The question kept coming to my mind. Like many graduate students, I was overwhelmed (难以承受的) with research, teaching, coursework, and some attempt at a personal life. Still, I asked myself, "Do I really need a 25th hour to help other people-or do I need to make better use of the 24 hours I have?"
I needed something to help me return to my old self. After that conversation with my colleague, I googled (谷歌搜索) “volunteer opportunities near me”. A local organization that drives people to stores or appointments was looking for volunteers. Having grown up in a rural village where everyone knew oneanother and my grandparents were always close by, I thought serving senior citizens in my new hometown might be just what I needed.
A short time later, I started to volunteer for an organization that provides transportation for senior citizens and people with disabilities. To my surprise, adding this activity to my busy life was just what I needed to calm the confusion I was feeling as a first-generation international graduate student.
I started to volunteer about 3 hours every weekend, the time I otherwise would have wasted oversleeping or scrolling (滚屏) through social media. Sharing stories with my riders was much more rewarding. What they told me about their lives helped me realize that in every corner of the world, humans are connected with the languageof emotions. And seeing how eager my riders were to spend time out and about inspired me to think about how to spend my time, which used to slip away. My previously overwhelming schedule began to feel manageable.
I'm proud of who I have become, and I continue to reflect on how I'm using the most valuable thing in life: my time.

A. A colleague recommended it.
B. A local organization offered it.
C. He got it from his grandparents.
D. He got it by surfing on the Internet.
10. What made the author feel his volunteer job was worth doing?
A. Communicating with his riders.
B. Improving his language learning.
C. Meeting his grandparents often.
D. Realizing his previous dream.
11. How did volunteering influence the author?
A. It helped himbecome confident and efficient.
B. He found a good way to live a free and quiet life.
C. He realized he had wasted too much time pursuing his Ph.
D.

Endangered species
An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct.______16______Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face ofthe earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways.
When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms.______17______Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals’ homes and food supplies.
_________18_________Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly-valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures like whales and sharks becoming endangered species.
________19________We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial penalties. The public can help out by refusing to buy any products made from these animals’ body parts. Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries, to protect animals from extinction by breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild.______20______
A.Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution.
B.Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing.
C.Eventually, all the creatures on Earth will enjoy being together.
D.Recent changes, however, have helped to improve the situation.
