Text 10
W:Last night I had a frightening experience. While I was eating dinner at the fast food restaurant where I normally go when I'm in a hurry, the manager announced that everybody had to leave the building. The place was crowded and that made the situation dangerous, as everyone was determined to get out first. To make matters worse, an elderly woman, who must have weighed 300 pounds, had just come up to the entrance, which was also the only exit. In the meantime, I remembered that I had left my purse in the chair I had been occupying when the announcement was made. It was certainly not convenient to return and get it, but I had to do it. When I finally got outside, I saw that the police bomb team had arrived and the men were studying the area. They finally found out that it was all a false alarm and the crowd went away.

I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn't bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I'm awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn't stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by.
I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

The United States has more tornadoes (龙卷风) than any other country in the world. In a normal year there are 800 to 1,000 tornadoes. Most happen in the middle part of the country. Tornadoes form when warm and cool air meet. In the Midwest, the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets the cold air from Canada.
The usual tornado season is March through May. Tornadoes form most often in the afternoon and early evening. There is often no warning of a tornado. People who live in the Midwest know the signs (征兆) of tornado activity. The sky becomes dark, often a greenish color. Dark clouds appear in the sky and there is often large hail (冰雹). Suddenly, there is a loud sound, like a train or a jet plane. Sometimes, two, three, five, ten or more tornadoes can form over a large area.
This type of tornado activity hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999. The day was stormy, with heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. As the storms continued, tornadoes began to form. Dozens of tornadoes hit towns and neighborhoods in Oklahoma, then in Kansas. Some stayed on the ground for several hours, destroying everything they touched. The tornadoes killed 43 people and injured 600 others. They destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. In some areas, not one home stood. In other areas, the tornadoes destroyed every home on the left side of the street, but didn't touch any homes on the right side. The tornadoes lifted people and cars into the air and then threw them back down to earth. So it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado.

Mind control
Imagine looking at something and being able to move it just by using your brain! That is exactly what the new technology called BrainGate can do -with the help of a robotic arm, anyway.
BrainGate is the idea of Professor John Donoghue and his team of researchers at the Brown Institute for Brain Science, USA. BrainGate is attached directly to the brain. First of all, gold wires are put into the part of the brain that controls movement. These are then connected to a small computer chip (芯片). When the person thinks about different movements, this creates electrical signals, which are picked up by the chip. After this, the signals that are created by the brain are sent back to a computer, which changes the signals into movements. Finally, the computer uses the robotic arm to carry out these movements. BrainGate can already be used to write an e-mail or play computer games, just by brain power.
The technology has already cost millions of dollars to develop and when it is available for
use, it will probably cost thousands of dollars per person. There are still many challenges ahead for Donoghue and his team. They are currently planning a mini wireless version, which will allow people to be connected to the computer at all times. Donoghue also dreams of using this technology to help disabled people who can't move their arms or legs. He plans to connect BrainGate directly to their own paralysed limbs (瘫痪的胳膊或腿). This will mean that the person can control their own body again, without relying on a robotic arm.
This research is attracting the military's (军方的) attention as well. However, it is easy to understand why scientists might be concerned about how thought-controlled machines could be used by the military.

A.It is too expensive.

C.It is difficult to control.
D.It produces few movements.
解析:选A推理判断题。

根据第三段中的“The technology ... dollars per person.”不难看出,该技术十分昂贵,可能会限制它的使用。

34.How will Donoghue help disabled people?
A.By making BrainGate smaller.
B.By developing a wireless version.
C.By attaching BrainGate to their bad limbs.
D.By replacing their limbs with robotic ones.
解析:选C细节理解题。

根据第三段中的“Donoghue also dreams ... paralysed limbs”可知,Donoghue打算把大脑之门直接连接到残疾人瘫痪的四肢上。
