Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer,Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son:suddenly he seemed to be talking more to his friends than to
his parents.“The door to his room is always shut,”Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter.“She used to cuddle up(蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk,”said Mark.“Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something.Sometimes she wants to be treated like a 1ittle girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11,children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds.“In fact, parents are first on the list,”said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers.“This completely changes during the teen years,”Riera explained.“They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them.To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say,and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young.Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.

28.What can be learned from the passage?
A.Parents are unhappy with their growing children.
B.Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers.
C.Parents should force their children to talk with them.
D.Parents should try to understand their teenagers.

Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smart phone to see how many ‘likes’ you’ve received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the notification sound that someone has sent yo u a message? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We check our phones all average of 150 times a day,and around 30%of the total time spent online is dedicated to social media.
Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health. This is something particularly affecting young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they are to be depressed. The study found that exposure to “highly ideali sed life of peers on social media causes feelings of envy”.Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition, which has been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships. Other research by Glasgow University found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.
Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.
29. According to the passage, what might be damaging our mental health?
A. Using smart phones too frequently.
B. Getting too many ‘likes’.
C. Being addicted to social media.
D. Longing for more messages.
30. According to the research, people may feel depressed because______.
A. they believe they have no real-life friends
B. they desire to be part of the real world
C. they are ignorant about social media.
D. they thought others are living a better life
31. The underlined word “hooked” is closest in meaning to______.
A. addicted
B. relaxed
C. depressed
D. embarrassed
D
Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers.
Their study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present.
The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful(有害的) it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step f orward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes.
Ten healthy volunteers(志愿者) were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs.
The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo.
The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a verve activity(神经活动), which cause coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness.
32. According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______.
A. cannot be as effective as codeine
B. can be harmful to people’s health
C. cannot be separated from chocolate
D. can be a more effective cure for coughs
33. What was used in the experiment to cause coughing?
A. Theobromine.
B. Codeine.
C. Capsaicin.
D. Placebo.
34. We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment _____.
A. were patients with bad coughs
B. were divided into the three groups
C. received standard treatments
D. suffered little side effects
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Codeine: A New Medicine
B. Chocolate May Cure Coughs
C. Cough Treatment: A Hard Case
D. Theobromine Can Cause Coughs

Dear Tom,
I was very sad to hear that you were suffering in your studies. I would like to share some advice with you on how to study efficiently.
Firstly, you can talk with some close friends about your problems and ask for their help. This is an important way to deal with your problems directly. Secondly, try to study in a positive way. This will decrease your study pressure, making studying an easy job. Third, spend time doing exercise. Not only does exercise build up our body, but also it provides time for us to refresh our mind. Last, you can listen to some smoothing music, which will be a good way to improve your current depressed mood.
I hope all this information can benefit you.
