Contrast Between Elinor And Marianna However, Elinor, though representing sense, does not lack passion, her love for Edward is no less than her sister’s affectionate feelings. And Marianne, though representing sensibility, is not always foolish and headstrong. After the heavy illness, she turns into a mature woman who cares for her family and be grateful for everything in her life, especially the selfishless care given by Colonel Brandon. As time pass by, they change themselves a bit to adapt the complicated society and finally get their own happiness.

窈窕淑女电影读后感英语

窈窕淑女电影读后感英语全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1Pretty Woman: A Modern Fairy Tale for the AgesAs a student, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when my friend recommended the 1990 romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. After all, it's an older movie and the premise of a wealthy businessman hiring a sex worker for the week didn't exactly scream compelling cinema. However, I'm always open to new experiences, so I decided to give it a shot - and I'm glad I did. "Pretty Woman" is an absolute gem of a film that transcends its seemingly salacious premise to become a truly heartwarming and surprisingly feminist fairy tale for modern times. The story follows Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts in acareer-defining role), a smart and charismatic sex worker who is hired by Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), a wealthy businessman, to be his escort for a week of social events. What starts as a simple business arrangement quickly blossoms into a genuine connection as Edward becomes captivated by Vivian's warmth, wit, and authenticity. As their bond deepens, the film deftly explores themes of class divides, gender dynamics, and the power of love to transcend societal barriers. One of the standout elements of "Pretty Woman" is Julia Roberts' magnetic performance as Vivian. From her very first scene, Roberts commands the screen with a blend of vulnerability, strength, and an infectious joie de vivre that makes it impossible not to root for her. Vivian is no damsel in distress; she's a savvy, self-assured woman who knows her worth and isn't afraid to advocate for herself. Roberts imbues Vivian with such depth and complexity that she transcends the stereotypical "prostitute with a heart of gold" trope, becoming a fully realized and empowered character in her own right.Richard Gere is equally impressive as Edward, portraying the billionaire with a perfect balance of charm, arrogance, and emotional depth. As Edward slowly peels back the layers of his own prejudices and assumptions, Gere's nuanced performance allows us to see the man beneath the wealthy façade – a lonely soul in search of genuine human connection. The chemistry between Roberts and Gere is electric, and their banter crackles with wit and romantic tension. But "Pretty Woman" is more than just a love story; it's also a sharp social commentary on class divisions and the often-harsh realities faced by those on the fringes of society. The film doesn't shy away from depicting the harsh realities of Vivian's life as a sex worker, but it also celebrates her resilience and refusal to be defined by her circumstances. In one particularly poignant scene, Vivian schools a snobbish saleswoman on the true meaning of class and dignity, reminding us that worth is not measured by wealth or social status, but by the content of one's character. The script, penned by J.F. Lawton, is a masterclass in balancing humor, heart, and social commentary. The dialogue is razor-sharp and laced with pointed observations about gender dynamics, wealth inequality, and the often-hypocritical nature of high society. Yet, even as the film tackles heavy subject matter, it never loses its sense of whimsy and romantic charm, a perfect blend of grit and fairy tale magic.Visually, "Pretty Woman" is a feast for the eyes, with director Garry Marshall capturing the glitz and glamour of Beverly Hills in all its opulent splendor. The iconic scenes of Vivian shopping on Rodeo Drive and attending the opera in her stunning evening gown are truly cinematic delights, showcasing the transformative power of love and self-belief. The film's soundtrack, featuringiconic tracks like "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison and "Show Me Your Soul" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, perfectly captures the film's blend of romance, sass, and youthful exuberance. At its core, "Pretty Woman" is a fairy tale for the modern age, a story that reminds us that true love can transcend boundaries of class, status, and societal expectations. It's a film that celebrates the power of self-acceptance, resilience, and the transformative nature of human connection. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere deliver career-defining performances, and thefilm's enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to strike a chord with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. As a student, I was deeply moved by the film's message of empowerment and its celebration of individuality. Vivian's journey from a woman struggling to survive on the margins of society to a self-assured, confident force of nature is truly inspiring. Her refusal to compromise her values or allow others to define her worth is a powerful lesson for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or been made to feel less-than.In a world that often seems consumed by cynicism and division, "Pretty Woman" is a welcome reminder that love, humor, and the indomitable human spirit can triumph over even the most daunting of obstacles. It's a film that will leave you witha smile on your face and a renewed faith in the power of fairy tales to uplift and inspire us all.篇2Pretty Woman: A Timeless Tale of Love and TransformationAs a young student trying to find my way in this world, I couldn't help but be captivated by the classic romantic comedy "Pretty Woman." The story, released in 1990, has stood the test of time and remains a beloved favorite among audiences of all ages. At its core, it is a enchanting modern-day Cinderella tale that challenges societal norms and stereotypes, leaving a lasting impact on how we perceive love, class divides, and personal growth. The film follows the unlikely pairing of Vivian Ward, a Hollywood Boulevard prostitute portrayed by the effervescent Julia Roberts, and Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman played by the charismatic Richard Gere. Their initial encounter is one of transaction – Edward hires Vivian as an escort for a week. However, what starts as a purely business arrangement gradually blossoms into something far more profound and transformative. One of the aspects that captivated me the most was the remarkable character development of Vivian. Initially portrayedas a tough-as-nails, streetwise woman hardened by her circumstances, we witness her journey of self-discovery and personal growth throughout the film. As she navigates the unfamiliar world of the ultra-wealthy, she maintains her integrity, wit, and vulnerability, allowing her true essence to shine through.Julia Roberts' performance is nothing short of iconic. Her natural charm and infectious energy breathe life into Vivian, making her a relatable and endearing character. Roberts effortlessly transitions from the sassy, quick-witted persona Vivian initially presents to the world, to revealing her more vulnerable, compassionate side as she opens herself up to the possibility of love and a different path in life.Equally captivating is Richard Gere's portrayal of Edward Lewis. Beneath his outwardly successful and stoic demeanor lies a man grappling with loneliness and a lack of genuine human connection. Vivian's presence in his life awakens something within him, challenging his preconceived notions and forcing him to confront the emptiness of his materialistic existence. The chemistry between Roberts and Gere is electric, and their on-screen romance is both heartwarming and believable. Their emotional connection transcends the superficial barriers ofwealth and social status, reminding us that love can blossom in the most unexpected of circumstances. Moreover, "Pretty Woman" tackles societal prejudices and stereotypes with a deft touch. The film challenges our preconceptions about sex workers, inviting us to look beyond the surface and recognize the humanity within each individual. Vivian's resilience, intelligence, and unwavering self-respect defy the stigma often associated with her profession, forcing us to question our own biases and judgments.Additionally, the movie explores the stark contrast between the haves and have-nots, the privileged elite and those struggling to make ends meet. It holds a mirror to theoften-harsh realities of wealth inequality and the societal divides that can arise from it. Yet, through Vivian and Edward's connection, we are reminded that true human connection transcends these boundaries and that love can bridge even the most daunting of divides.Undoubtedly, "Pretty Woman" is a delightful romantic comedy that keeps us entertained from start to finish. However, beneath its lighthearted exterior lies a poignant commentary on love, self-acceptance, and societal perceptions. It reminds us that true beauty lies not in material possessions or societal status, butin the kindness, resilience, and authenticity we bring to the world. As a student navigating the complexities of life and relationships, I found myself deeply moved by this film. It served as a gentle reminder that we should embrace our unique selves, challenge preconceived notions, and keep our hearts open to the transformative power of love – no matter our circumstances or backgrounds. In a world often consumed by cynicism and superficiality, "Pretty Woman" offers a refreshing and uplifting perspective on life, love, and personal growth. It is a timeless classic that will continue to resonate with audiences for generations to come, leaving an indelible mark on our collective consciousness and reminding us to embrace the magic and possibilities that life has to offer.篇3Sense and Sensibility: A Timeless Tale of Love, Reason, and SisterhoodAs a student of literature, I have always been drawn to the works of Jane Austen, whose novels capture the essence of human emotions and societal dynamics with remarkable clarityand wit. Among her celebrated works, "Sense and Sensibility" stands out as a poignant exploration of the delicate balance between reason and passion, and the enduring bond of sisterhood. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, whose contrasting personalities epitomize the central theme of the novel. Elinor, the embodiment of sense, is the epitome of propriety and restraint, while Marianne, the embodiment of sensibility, is a passionate and emotional soul who wears her heart on her sleeve. From the very outset, Austen masterfully weaves a tapestry of intricate relationships and societal expectations that shape the lives of these two sisters. The death of their father and their subsequent displacement from their comfortable existence thrust them into a world where their fortunes hang precariously on the goodwill of others.Elinor's unwavering composure and pragmatism serve as a counterpoint to Marianne's impulsive and romantic nature. Their divergent approaches to love and life create a captivating dynamic that resonates with readers of all ages. Elinor's quiet devotion to Edward Ferrars, despite the obstacles and misunderstandings that threaten their union, stands in starkcontrast to Marianne's all-consuming infatuation with the dashing yet fickle John Willoughby.Austen's masterful storytelling weaves a intricate tapestry of social commentary, exploring the constraints and expectations placed upon women in Regency England. The sisterly bond between Elinor and Marianne serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, transcending the societal pressures and personal challenges they face. One of the most striking aspects of "Sense and Sensibility" is Austen's deft handling of character development. Each character, from the well-intentioned but misguided Mrs. Jennings to the enigmatic and complex Colonel Brandon, is imbued with depth and nuance. Their interactions and relationships are masterfully crafted, revealing the complexities of human nature and the intricate web of societal conventions that governed the era.Austen's witty and insightful observations on the human condition are a constant source of delight. Her razor-sharp wit and keen eye for satire never fail to elicit a wry smile or a hearty chuckle. Whether it is the comedic misunderstandings that arise from misplaced assumptions or the subtle jabs at the superficiality of high society, Austen's writing is a testament to her profound understanding of the human psyche.Beyond the romantic entanglements and societal critiques, "Sense and Sensibility" is a celebration of the enduring power of sisterhood. Elinor and Marianne's unwavering love and support for each other, despite their differences, serve as a touching reminder of the unbreakable bonds that can transcend even the most trying of circumstances. As a student, I find myself drawn to the timeless themes and relatable characters that populate Austen's world. The struggles and triumphs of Elinor and Marianne resonate with the universal experiences of finding one's place in society, navigating the complexities of relationships, and reconciling reason with emotion. Moreover, Austen's masterful command of language and her ability to capture the nuances of human interaction make "Sense and Sensibility" a veritable treasure trove for literary analysis and discussion. Every word, every turn of phrase, is carefully crafted to convey deeper meanings and insights, inviting readers to peel back the layers and uncover the rich tapestry of ideas and emotions that lie beneath the surface. In conclusion, "Sense and Sensibility" is a timeless masterpiece that has earned its place among the greatest works of literature. Austen's ability to weave a captivating tale whilesimultaneously exploring profound themes and societal commentary is a testament to her genius as a writer. For students of literature and lovers of great storytelling alike, this novel is a must-read, a window into a bygone era that continues to resonate with modern audiences. Elinor and Marianne's journey serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of love, reason, and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.。

感性与理性的 英语作文

感性与理性的英语作文Title: The Interplay Between Sensibility and Rationality。
In the realms of human cognition, two guiding forces often intertwine, shaping our perceptions, decisions, and ultimately, our lives: sensibility and rationality. Sensibility, driven by emotion and intuition, provides color and depth to our experiences, while rationality, grounded in logic and analysis, offers structure and direction to our actions. Together, they form a dynamic duo that influences every aspect of our existence, from the mundane to the profound. At the heart of sensibility lies our capacity to feel and empathize. It is the force that stirs our passions, igniting joy, sorrow, love, and fear within us. When we encounter a breathtaking sunset, it is sensibility that moves us to awe and wonder. When we witness injustice, it is sensibility that sparks righteous indignation. Ouremotions, raw and unfiltered, serve as a compass, guidingus through the complexities of human interaction and the subtleties of the human condition.Yet, while sensibility paints the canvas of our experiences with vibrant hues, it is rationality that provides the framework upon which these experiences are built. Rationality tempers our emotions, offering clarity amidst the storm of feelings. It is the voice of reasonthat urges us to weigh options, consider consequences, and make informed decisions. When faced with a dilemma, it is rationality that helps us navigate the labyrinth of choices, guiding us towards the most prudent course of action. However, the relationship between sensibility and rationality is not always harmonious. At times, they clash, each vying for dominance over our thoughts and actions. In moments of passion, sensibility may cloud our judgment, leading us astray with its siren song of desire. Conversely, in the pursuit of cold logic, rationality may strip awaythe richness of human experience, reducing life to a series of calculated equations devoid of emotion and meaning.Yet, it is precisely in their tension that the true beauty of sensibility and rationality emerges. For it is in the crucible of conflict that we are forced to reconcilethe disparate aspects of our humanity, forging a synthesis that transcends the limitations of either alone. When sensibility and rationality work in tandem, they complement each other, each enhancing the other's strengths while mitigating its weaknesses. In the realm of creativity, sensibility and rationality converge to produce works of art that resonate deeply with the human soul. Artists harness the power of emotion to imbue their creations with life and vitality, while simultaneously employing the tools of reason to structure their compositions with precision and balance. Whether itbe a stirring symphony, a captivating novel, or a breathtaking sculpture, art is the product of a delicate dance between sensibility and rationality, eachcontributing its own unique flavor to the final masterpiece.Similarly, in the arena of science and innovation, sensibility and rationality collaborate to push the boundaries of human knowledge and achievement. Scientists harness their intuition and curiosity to explore the mysteries of the universe, while employing the rigors of the scientific method to test hypotheses and draw conclusions. From the exploration of outer space to the unraveling of the human genome, scientific progress is fueled by the interplay of sensibility and rationality, each pushing the other ever forward in the quest for understanding. In the tapestry of human existence, sensibility and rationality are not opposing forces, but complementary aspects of our nature. Like the yin and yang, they exist in a delicate balance, each necessary for the other to truly flourish. It is through their interplay that we navigate the complexities of life, drawing upon the richness of our emotions while employing the clarity of our intellect. In embracing both sensibility and rationality, we unlock the full potential of our humanity, charting a course towards a brighter and more fulfilling future.。

理智与情感英语Bradon

理智与情感英语BradonIntroduction"Sense and Sensibility," a novel by Jane Austen, is a profound exploration of the societal expectations and personal struggles of the early 19th-century English gentry. The novel presents a dichotomy between the characters of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who embody the principles of reason and emotion, respectively. This essay delves into the contrasting approaches to life taken by these two sisters and the implications of their choices on their personal journeys.Elinor's SenseElinor Dashwood, the eldest of the sisters, is the epitome of sense and rationality. Her approach to life is marked by a strict adherence to social norms and a commitment to maintaining family honor. Elinor's ability to suppress her emotions, even in the face of heartbreak, is a testament to her strength of character. Her love for Edward Ferrars is a central plot point, and her stoic handling of the situation when she learns of his prior engagement showcases her commitment to reason over emotion.Marianne's SensibilityIn stark contrast to Elinor, Marianne is a creature of passion and emotion. She is guided by her feelings and is anardent advocate for love as the sole basis for marriage. Marianne's sensibility is both her charm and her downfall. Her romantic involvement with John Willoughby, a charming but deceitful suitor, leads to her public humiliation and asevere blow to her emotional well-being.The Role of SocietyThe societal expectations of the time play a crucial role in shaping the sisters' responses to their personal tribulations. Elinor's sense is, in part, a product of her understanding of the societal consequences of unbridled emotion. Conversely, Marianne's sensibility is a rebellion against these constraints, albeit a costly one. The novel uses these characters to critique the societal norms that limit women's emotional expression and autonomy. The Balance Between Sense and SensibilityAs the story unfolds, both sisters experience a shift intheir perspectives. Elinor's unwavering sense begins to show signs of emotional strain, while Marianne's heartache leadsher to appreciate the value of reason. The novel suggeststhat a balance between sense and sensibility is the key to a fulfilling life. Elinor's eventual happiness with Colonel Brandon and Marianne's recovery and growth illustrate this concept. Conclusion"Sense and Sensibility" by Brandon is a nuanced portrayal ofthe complexities of love, family, and social standing in the early 19th century. Through the characters of Elinor and Marianne, Austen challenges the reader to consider the merits of both reason and emotion, and the importance of finding a harmonious balance between the two.

Finding Your Passion The Path to Self-Discovery

Finding Your Passion The Path to Self-DiscoveryFinding your passion is a journey that many people embark on in their lives. It's a process of self-discovery and exploration that can lead to a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose. However, it can also be a daunting task, as many individuals struggle to identify what truly ignites their inner fire. In this response, we will explore the various aspects of finding one's passion, including the importance of self-reflection, the role of external influences, and the impact of societal expectations. We will also delve into the benefits of pursuing one's passion and the potential challenges that may arise along the way. Self-reflection plays a crucial role in the process of finding one's passion. It involves taking the time to introspect and identify the activities, interests, and experiences that bring joy and meaning to one's life. This can be a deeply personal and introspective process, requiring individuals to delve into their thoughts and emotions to uncover what truly resonates with them. Self-reflection may involve asking oneself probing questions such as "What activities make me lose track of time?" or "What are the things I am naturally good at and enjoy doing?" By engaging in this process, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their innermost desires, ultimately leading them closer to discovering their passion. External influences, such as family, friends, and societal expectations, can also play a significant role in shaping one's perception of passion. Family and friends may offer well-intentioned advice and guidance based on their own experiences and beliefs, which can influence an individual's choices and decisions. Additionally, societal expectations and cultural norms may create pressure to pursue certain careers or paths that are deemed prestigious or lucrative, rather than following one's true passion. These external influences can create a sense of conflict within individuals, making it challenging to discern their authentic desires from the expectations of others. It is important for individuals to recognize and navigate these external influences in their quest to find their passion, ultimately staying true to themselves and their inner calling. The benefits of pursuing one's passion are multifaceted andcan have a profound impact on various aspects of life. Furthermore, following one's passion can lead to a sense of authenticity and alignment withone's true self, ultimately contributing to a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Despite the numerous benefits of pursuing one's passion, there are also potential challenges that individuals may encounter along the way. One common challenge is the fear of failure or the unknown, which can create hesitation and self-doubt. Individuals may worry about the practicality of pursuing their passion, such as financial stability or societal validation. This fear can be paralyzing and may prevent individuals from fully embracing their passion. Additionally, external obstacles such as lack of support or resources can pose challenges in the pursuit of one's passion. Overcoming these challenges requires resilience, courage, and a willingness to take risks in order to fully embrace one's passion. In conclusion, finding one's passion is a deeply personal and transformative journey thatinvolves self-reflection, navigating external influences, and overcoming potential challenges. It is a process that requires courage, vulnerability, and awillingness to explore one's innermost desires. However, the rewards of pursuing one's passion are immeasurable, leading to a greater sense of fulfillment, purpose, and authenticity. The two participating teachers prove to be in accordance with the commonly accepted description of “good English teachers” with their own characteristics by positively influencing the different level of the pedagogic process. Classroom observation is also proved to be a desirable way for teacher development.[文献标识码]A1. IntroductionClassroom teaching is always the basic and most important way of English acquisition and there is no exception in tertiary level in Chinese context. There have been a lot of researches about language teaching methods, but no method can be employed as a cure for all. Language environment, students’ motivation and language teaching policy, all the factors will influence the choice of teaching methods and even in one class period, methods may vary according to different purposes. There’s no ready recipe forclassroom teaching and the key lies in how the teachers choose and implement different methods according to the real situation and how they incorporate various methods organically.Modern society witnesses the prevalence of learning-centered classroom, while no one will deny that teacher still plays a leading role as the manager, the facilitator, the monitor, the assessor and so on. A successful language teacher knows how to empower the learners and get them actively involved by creating better chances in a learning-centered classroom and optimizing the current learning circumstances. Now in the absence of clear methodological guidelines, there should be various ways to be a “good teacher”,as a wellrounded, confident and experienced individual(Sowden,2007).2. Literature review2.1 Natural language acquisition and classroom teachingClassroom is always considered not as a real situation for language learning and many factors there are considered totally different from natural language acquisition. However, classroom is the place foreign language learning actually takes place and classroom teaching is the most important way of language acquisition in Chinese context. It is a real society constructed both by the teacher and the students. How to make the best of this small societyto maximize the opportunities is vital to language learning. Language teachers all share the conviction that given the right environment and appropriate tasks, students have the chances to use all those communicative strategies which are common for natural language use. 3.3 Findings3.3.1 Different stylesRosa and Christina displayed different style in their classroom teaching and both of them were charming in their own way.Rosa: follow my paceRosa showed elegance all the time in classroom and she seemed to have everything under control and nothing could disturb the pace of her class. Her motto about tertiary language learning is “learning by doing”, which was clearly reflected by various tasks she assigned to the students. Group presentation, group discussion,role-play, on-line learning tasks and even home work for oral practice in the mp3 form. Rosa gave very clear instructions about different learning tasks and tried every way to invite all the students to participate in the classroom activities. Students were no longer passive audience but took initiative in interaction and actively participate in the classroom activities.Christina: follow my passionChristina was a very passionate language teacher. She alwaysdisplayed vivid facial expressions and body language in class and laughed happily together with her students. Every class time, she tried her best to lead her students with passion and enthusiasm to enjoy the journey of learning. She used different ways to create a happy classroom environment such as playing students’ be loved English songs during the break. A remarkable characteristic was her belief of sharing life experiences and conveying positive attitude towards study, work, love and life while appreciating the language. She adopted very flexible teaching methods according to the learning material and shared a lot about her own opinions with her students.3.3.2 Shared successful practicesAlthough the two teachers displayed quite different style in classroom teaching, the observation still uncovered many factors in common that might be helpful in various contexts with individual adaptation. Many of the characteristics the teachers displayed could be said to be desirable for any successful teacher: a warm and welcoming atmosphere where learners feel themselves to be valued; good communication skills; creativity; good subject knowledge; well-planned lessons; enthusiasm and successful management skills.3.3.3 Teacher’s language proficiencyBoth teachers showed high language proficiency with clear andpleasant pronunciation which could be good examples for the students. They used English all the time with a moderate speed which was not difficult for the students to catch. As non-native teachers, their language proficiency not only serves as “comprehensible input”,but also helps create images of successful language learners. They also hold quite broad knowledge because they were supposed to give students certain feedbacks concerning a large variety of topics brought by the students to class in different assignments. Both Rosa and Christina had great familiarity with the teaching materials. They just walked around the classroom, talking and organizing activities based on the content without holding the textbook or their teaching notes. 3.3.4 Positive environment Both classrooms presented very positive and encouraging atmosphere with the teachers smiling all the time and using different ways to encourage students and acknowledge every effort and progress students made. There was one particular detail about Rosa. She used an“invitation” gesture to ask a student to express his/ her opinions in class by extending her palm out. We might not be strange with the pointing gesture which is not uncommon but might seem aggressive. This tiny difference made by Rosa is sure to make students feel more comfortable in the classroom. Christina impressed the author by her wonderful memory for students’names. She seemed to know everyone in her classroom and every time she invited a student to answer her questions, she used his/her name. The author learned from the interview with the students that knowing every of them by names makes them feel really cared for and this is one of the important reasons why they like Christina so much.Creating the positive learning environment also includes catering to students’ real needs. Rosa conducted a survey at the end of each semester and the opinions she collected are used for the alteration of teaching plans for the coming semester. Christina talked a lot with her students whenever she got time. Classroom decisions were negotiated with the students and feedbacks and advices were especially welcomed. The positive environment is also created by respecting students’ diversity. Their students were quite free to choose the topics and content of their presentation and various forms of showing their talents, which were appreciated with the tolerant acceptance and friendly encouragement. Rosa and Christina developed the affective factors of classroom teaching positively by creating a relaxed and encouraging environment for learning.3.3.5 Various teaching and classroom management methodsRosa and Christina combined different teaching methods in their classroom. You can’t name which method in particular they areadopting, but you can find details of different methods present in their teaching. According to them, there is no recipe for the best method of teaching and most teaching methods we learned in the books are based on western experiences. The big population in China brings us big English classes with quite diversified proficiency. It’s up to the teachers to adapt different ways according to the actual situation they are faced with. Group work is prominent in both classes because oral proficiency is accorded with top priority and working in groups is an effective way of managing big classes with at least 55 students. There was group presentation for each class time and group discussion was a common practice about given topics. Whenever there was a group competition, classroom atmosphere became so active and the author was once so amused to find a shy girl put up her group member’s hand for a chance to answer the question! There were times for whole class instruction for the explanation of language terms and there were pair works for role play. When the question was about personal understanding and opinions, students were invited to express themselves individually. Both Rosa and Christina acted as different roles in different activities and tried their best to guarantee the learning opportunities.3.3.6 Rich and authentic learning materialsRosa and Christina never confined the content within the textbook and used rich, authentic and up-to-date learning materials in class. For a text with the theme of “being famous”, Rosa used movie clips from Notting Hill to encourage the students to talk about advantages and disadvantages of being famous. Pictures about Super Girls, a famous Chinese show program were also used for students to discuss about people’s desire of getting famous overnight. Christina asked her students to do a group competition of translating the most popular words, such as“Geilivable” in the first class of the semester and greatly warmed the classroom atmosphere. She also used popular American TV series for various purposes―shor t clips for the actually use of some words and some episodes for discussion. These authentic materials serve to provide authentic extension to the course book and offer students better learning environment. To include what the students are interested in into the classroom can also arouse their passion for learning English. Encouraged by the authentic materials brought by the teachers and the tolerating classroom atmosphere, students are also willing to bring to the classroom materials of their own interest, especially for group presentation. The topics varied from homosexuality to some current hot issues. The author was extremely impressed by a presentationwhich relates university life to some well-known economic terms.3.3.7 Facilitating teacher talkWithout investigating some traditional ideas of teacher talk, such as time allocation, question types and so on, the researcher decided to highlight the interactional features emerged from the observation since the optimal condition for classroom language learning is the students’ need and desire to communicate.3.3.8 After class interviews(1) Interview with the studentsSeveral students were interviewed after class and most of them showed very positive feedback to Rosa and Christina. They enjoyed the happy and passionate learning atmosphere with their contagious enthusiasm and were willing to do the various tasks because they were willing to take more responsibility and play an active role. Some of the students worried that their teachers did n’t cover the text book thoroughly as the traditional way did, so sometimes they were confused and didn’t know what they have exactly learned in class. Their worries were surely attended by their teachers. Rosa changed some of her teaching plans according to the classroom survey and Christina gave a clear outline about the important language elements in every part in the text. Christina told me later that she was so happy to find many students using those phrases she listedout in the following writing tasks.(2) Interview with the teachersRetrospective interview were conducted with Rosa and Christina after each observation period. The author asked questions about teaching process and classroom activities and clarify all the puzzles. For language teachers, the constant repetition of lesson routines, the revisiting of texts and activities make it difficult for us to maintain a sense of excitement with the business of teaching. The interviews proved the two teachers to be very enthusiastic about their career and are willingly to develop themselves all the time. The interviews displayed their constant reflections of their own teaching and their willingness to challenge what we have taken for granted and to try out new ideas. They also did classroom observations every semester and always communicated with colleagues about their gains and puzzles in teaching. In all these cases, they not only improved their own performance, but also learned more about teaching and about themselves. Reflection is valuable when teachers are able to make a critical enquiry into the process of their teaching practice.4. ConclusionThe classroom observation proves the two teachers as successful examples because they try their best to positively influence thedifferent level of the pedagogic process. They influence the affective level positively by creating a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere; the cognitive level by asking challenging questions and assigning various tasks; the social level by using different classroom management techniques and the communication level by inviting all the learners to participate (Littlewood, 2009). Their performances are in accordance with the description of “good English teachers”of several researchers in terms of their language proficiency, t heir attention to students’needs, their promotion for real classroom communication and the encouraging learning environment they developed(Davies & Pearse, 2002; Sowden, 2007;Suliivan, 2004). The present study also shed light on the classroom observation which turns out to be a very useful way of teacher development. The author benefited a lot by observing their classrooms and learned very useful ways which are proved to be effective in the author’s own classroom. Several interviews with the teachers h elp us to know better of each other’s teaching beliefs and experiences. Classroom observation can be a fruitful way of professional cooperation and development. Most teachers have an ideal of how they appear as teachers and about how effective certain mannerisms and techniques can be. By classroom observation, we can know better of our beliefs and practices from another empatheticcolleague’s perspective. Most of us find discussing our situation with others helps us to sort things out in our mind and to be more objective about our own teaching. Peer observation and cooperative development in a small scale should be a very helpful way of teacher development. As with all case-study research, the present study does not claim statistical generalizability of its findings and it is known to all that good teachers come in all shapes and sizes. However, this study tries to record what really happens in Chinese tertiary English classrooms and hopes to not only discuss how to adapt to the context to create better learning opportunities but also to English teaching in a global sense. This is an era of “seeing diversity in unity”( Larsen-freeman,2012). The author firmly believe that our profession is an art rather than a science. With all the professional knowledge, with the open mind and willingness to learn and to develop, especially with the passion and our personal charm, we are sure to achieve the common goal of effective teaching through diversified means.References:Allwright, D.
