Recently, a couple in New Zealand were forbidden from naming their baby son 4Real. Even though New Zealand has quite liberal rules about naming children, names beginning with a number are not allowed. They decided to call him Superman instead.
In many countries around the world, unusual names for children are becoming more popular, especially since the increasing trend for celebrities (名人) to give their children wacky names. In Britain, you can call a child almost anything you like --- the only restrictions on parents relate to offensive words such as swear words.
Some parents choose names which come from popular culture. For example, there have
been six boys named Gandalf after the character in The Lord of the Rings. Equally, names related to sport are fairly common --- since 1984, 36 children have been called Arsenal after the football team.
Other parents like to make up names, or combine names to make their own unique version, a method demonstrated by Jordan, the British model, who recently invented the name Tiaamii for her daughter by combining the names Thea and Amy (the two grandmothers). She was quoted as saying that the accent and double letters were added to make the name “more exotic (奇异的)〞.
Other countries have much stricter rules when it comes to naming children. Countries including Japan, Denmark, Spain, Germany and Argentina have an approved list of names from which parents must choose. In China, there are some rules about what you may call a child --- no foreign letters or symbols are allowed. As a result, a couple were recently banned from calling their baby@.
In Britain, some names which were previously thought of as old-fashioned have become more popular again, such as Maisie or Ella for a girl, or Alfie or Noah for a boy.
But the most popular names are not the wacky ones. The top names are fairly traditional --- Jack, Charlie and Thomas for boys and Grace, Ruby and Jessica for girls.

Foreign drivers will have a pay on-the-spot fines of up to£900 for breaking the traffic law to be carried out next month.
If they do not have enough cash or a working credit card, their vehicles will be clamped (扣留) until they pay and they will face an additional fee of £80for getting back their vehicles.
The law will also apply to British citizens. The fines will be described officially as “deposits (保证金)〞when the traffic law takes effect, because the money would be returned if the driver went to court and was found not guilty. In practice, very few foreign drivers are likely to return to Britain to deal with their cases.
Foreign drivers are rarely charged because police cannot take action against them if they fail to appear in court. Instead, officers often merely give warnings.
Three million foreign-registered (注册的) vehicles enter Britain each year. Polish vehicles make up 36 percent, French vehicles 10 percent and German vehicles 9 percent.
Foreign vehicles are 30 percent more likely to be in a crash than British-registered vehicles. The number of crashes caused by foreign vehicles rose by 47 percent between 2003 and 2008. There were almost 400 deaths and serious injuries and 3,000 slight injuries from accidents caused by foreign vehicles in 2008.
The new law is partly intended to settle the problem of foreign lorry drivers ignoring limits on weight and hours at the wheel. Foreign lorries are three times more likely to be in a crash than
British lorries. Recent spot checks found that three quarters of lorries that failed safety tests were registered overseas.
The standard deposit for a careless driving offence--- such as driving too close to the vehicle in front or reading a map at the wheel --- will be£300. Deposits for speeding offences and using mobile phones will be £60. Foreign drivers will not get points as punishment added to their licenses, while British drivers will.

One trip for his dogs in a plane’s cargo hold (货舱) was enough to convince Alysa Binder that owners needed a better alternative to get their pet from one city to another. On Tuesday, the
first flight for his Pet Airways, the first-ever all-pet airline, took off from RepublicAirport in Farmingdale, NY.
All commercial airlines allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the plane. Others must travel in the cargo hold --- a dark and sometimes dangerous place where temperatures can vary wildly. Binder started Pet Airways in 2005. The last four years have been spent designing their fleet (舰队) of five planes according to new four-legged requirements.
Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months. Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities --- New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $250 one-way fare is almost equal to pet fees at the largest US airlines. For owners the big difference is service. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin (客舱) of the plane, lined with cages in place of seats. Pets will be taken good care of during flight. The pets are also given walks and bathroom breaks before flights. A trip from New York to Los Angeles, for example, will take about 24 hours. On that route, pets will stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break and dinner, and stay for the night before finishing the trip the next day.
Amanda Hickey is one of the new airline’s first customers. Her two pet dogs are taking their first flight soon. Hickey said the service was a welcome alternative when she gets them from her Denver home to Chicago to stay while she and her husband travel to Aruba. “For a little more money, I have peace of mind.〞she said.

Abel Janszoon Tasman
Abel Tasman was born in a little village in the Netherlands in 1603. Nowadays there is a road in the village named after him and the house where he was believed to live is still a functional farm called “Tassemaheerd〞. His first wife was called Claesgie Heyndrix, who he had a daughter with, Claesjen. In December, 1631 he married again, this time with Jannetje (Joanna) Tjaerts, a 21-year-old girl.
In 1634, Abel Tasman joined the Dutch East India and he became first mate of the Weesp, one of the company’s ships. Later that year he became skipper (船长) on the Mocha.
With this ship he patrolled (巡逻) in the ocean. On one of his voyages, three men were killed and after returning to Batavia, Tasman got a new job. He had to transport cargo and booty 〔战利品〕in the northwest Pacific. A high death toll (死亡人数) through discases was normal
and the Dutch ships weren’t seaworthy.
On one voyage Tasman returned safely after he had lost two of his three ships in a storm. After this voyage Tasman was ordered to explore the southeast in order to find a new sea route to Chile in South America. This voyage to the “GreatSouthLand〞(as the Dutch called Australia) made him the famous discovery of Tasmania. At that stage though, Tasman and his crew had no idea that they had made such a significant discovery.

Chicago was the first city on our trip that met our expectations. The first thing we did after having hamburgers at McDonalds for breakfast was take a boat tour of the Chicago River. This was a 90-minute trip through the river in the city and out onto Lake Michigan, while the guide told us a few interesting facts and every fact we never wanted to know about the architecture of every building.
Still feeling full from McDonalds and feeling much more knowledgeable on early-1900s building designs, we headed to lunch. On our way to finding a deep-dish pizza restaurant, we passed the Chicago Mercantile Hall of Fame with department store legends such as Charles Walgreen.
We stopped at Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria for the Chicago’s special food, deep-dish pizza, and it was delicious. I had the same pizza in the past, but nothing was quite like the real thing. Then, we walked slowly over to the SearsTower. The view from 103 floors up in the air on this clear spring day was breathtaking, but it was difficult to see some buildings clearly.
Finally, it was time to go to the park, Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. I had heard so much about Wrigley. Walking around the park, I noticed the seats with no roof covering them on top of the buildings around, which made Wrigley a special park for baseball games. The only thing I found special was the atmosphere during the game. On the way out of town, we made a quick midnight stop in the Southside to see the US Cellular Field, home of the White Sox. In short, I completely enjoyed Chicago and everything it offered.

One possible version:
Last week, our school organized a three-day training camp, whose aim was to develop our physical ability and improve team spirit.
After an hour’s bus ride, we arrived at the training camp, which was located at the foot of a small hill. Then we were asked to visit the farmers’ houses nearby in groups. From our survey, we learnt that farmers’ living standard had been greatly improved.
During the following two days we experienced group activities like climbing the hill, climbing barrier wall and other extreme ones.
I was so deeply moved that I burst into tears sometimes! It was the first time thatI had come to realize that unity is power! What a wonderful time we spent there!。
