Grown-
ups are often surprised by how well they remember somethin g they learned as children but have never practiced ever sinc e. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be state d as follows: Once we have learned something, additional lear
ning trials(尝
试) increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swi mming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood ta les such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but o verlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀
表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather q uickly the things that we learn in school, because they are an other of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学
习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade , is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramm ing, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on t he examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everythi ng he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is reall y necessary for one's future development.
12. What is the main idea of paragraph 1?
A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D. Stories for children are easy to remember.
13. The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.
A. presenting research findings
B. setting down general rules
C. making a comparison
D. using examples
14. According to the author, being able to use multiplication ta bles is_______.
A. a result of overlearning
B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems
D. a basic step towards advanced studies
15. What is the author's opinion on cramming?
A. It leads to failure in college exams.
B. It's helpful only in a limited way.
C. It's possible to result in poor memory.
D. It increases students' learning interest.

Dear Seth,
You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you c an’t read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell yo u in this letter. But someday, when you’re ready, I hope you w ill find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.
Life can be cruel
16 They’ll tease you or try to hurt you because you’r
e different.
There’re not much you can do except learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you and who mak e you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this , treasure them, spend time with them and love them.
Be open to life anyway
Yes, you’ll find cruelty and suffering in your journey through lif e, but don’t let that close you to new things. Don’t retreat from life, don’t hide or wall yourself off. 17 .
Life isn’t a competition
You will meet many people who will try to do better than you, i n school, in college, at work. To them, life is a competition. But here’s the secret: life isn’t a competition. 18 . Lear n to enjoy the journey and make it a journey of happiness, of
constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.
19
If there’s a single word you should live your life by, it should b e this: love. It might sound corny, I know… but trust me, there’s no better rule in life.
Love not only your loved ones, but your neighbors… your co-workers, your brothers and sisters in humanity. And most of al l love yourself and learn to love yourself for who you are.
20 You are starting out on an unknown, tiring, scary, but ultimately incredibly wonderful journey, and always reme mber I will be there for you when I can.
Love,
Your Dad
Life is full of love
It’s a journey.
Love should be your rule
Last, think that you are a wonderful human being.
Finally, remember that I love you and always will.
Be open to new things, new experiences, new people
There will be people in your life who won’t be very nice.
