第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Some of the greatest moments in human history were fueled by emotional intelligence. When Martin Luther King. Jr. presented his dream, he chose language that would stir the hearts of his audience. Delivering this electrifying(震撼性的) message required emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions.
Emotional intelligence has been highly recommended by leaders, policymakers, and educators as the solution to a wide range of social problems. If we can teach our children to manage emotions, the argument goes, we'll have less bullying and more cooperation. If we can cultivate emotional intelligence among leaders and doctors, we'll have more caring workplaces and more compassionate healthcare.
Emotional intelligence is important, but the uncontrolled enthusiasm has obscured (掩盖)a dark side. New evidence shows that when people sharpen their emotional skills, they become better at manipulating (把持) others. When you're good at controlling your own emotions, you can hide your true feelings. When you know what others are feeling, you can motivate them to act against their own best interests.
Social scientists have begun to document this dark side of emotional intelligence. In a research led by University of professor Jochen Menges, when a leader gave an inspiring speech filled with emotion. the audience was less likely to scrutinize (细察) the
message and remembered of the content. Ironically(讽刺的是) audience members were so moved by the speech that they claimed to recall more of it.
The authors call this the awestruck effect, but it might just as easily be described as the dumbstruck effect. One observer reflected that Hitler's persuasive impact came from his ability to strategically express emotions—he would "ear open his heart—and these emotions affected his followers to the point that they would"stop thinking critically and just emote.”
Leaders who master emotions can rob us of our capacities to reason. If their values are out of step with our own. the results can be destructive. New evidence suggests that when people have self-serving motives (动机), emotional intelligence becomes a weapon for manipulating others. In a study led by the University of Toronto psychologist Stephane Cote, university employees filled out a survey about their Machiavellian(不择手段的) tendencies, and took a test measuring their knowledge about effective strategies for managing emotions. Then, Cote's team assessed how often the employees deliberately undermined (逐渐削弱) their colleagues. The employees involved in the most harmful behaviors were Machiavellians with high emotional intelligence. They used their emotional skills to lower the dignity of their peers for personal gain.
Shining a light on this dark side of emotional intelligence is one mission of a research team led University College London professor Martin Kilduff. According to these experts, emotional intelligence helps people disguise (伪装) one set of emotions while expressing another for personal Professor Kiiduit's team writes,""The strategic disguise of one's own emotions and the manipulation of others' emotions for strategic ends are behaviors evident not only on Shakespeare's stage but also in the offices and corridors where power and influence are traded.”
Of course, people aren't always using emotional intelligence for nefarious ends. More often than not, emotional skills are simply instrumental tools for goal accomplishment. A research team discovered that founder Anita Roddick used emotional intelligence to inspire her employees fundraise for charity. As Roddick explained, "Whenever particular project we always tried to break their hearts we wanted to persuade our staff to support a particular project we always tried to break their hearts.”
There is growing recognition that emotional intelligence--like any skill--can be used
for good or evil. So if we're going to teach emotional intelligence in schools and develop it at work, we need to consider the values that go along with it and where it's actually useful.

22.(8分)The British live on a small island. They are surrounded by the sea, so it is
not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, ocean-going sailing ships in the fifteenth century, the sea became even more important to the country’s development. Ships setting sail from England determined to extend Britain’s territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the world. Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places. By the nineteenth century, Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world.
The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical (航海的) terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describ e an honest and fair business deal as being “above board”. This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship’s business would be carried out below decks (below the boards) out of public view. On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck (above the boards), in the open where everyone could see what was going on.
“Pipe down!”, meaning “Be quiet!”, is another common express ion that has nautical origins. The ship’s boatswain (水手长) would blow a whistle, or pipe, at the end of the day to indicate (表明) to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep.
Most native English speakers have heard the expression “not enough r oom to swing a cat”, but few know that the “cat” does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The “cat” is actually a short form of “cat of nine tails” — a whip with nine, knotted (打结的) tails. A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing (鞭打) a poor sailor under his control!
1、The British have been strongly influenced by the sea because ________.
A.they occupied more land around the world
B.they got more wealth from the sea
C.they live on an island surrounded by the sea
D.they had the largest navy ever
2、If someone is open and above board, it means he is ________.
A.secretive B.honest
C.cheerful D.dishonest
3、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Sailors need to go to sleep when they hear a whistle.
B.Sailors will be whipped if they do business below decks.
C.A poor sailor may be whipped nine times a day.
D.There is no spare room to raise cats on ships.
4、What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The business on British sailing ships.
B.The influence of British sailors’ language on English.
C.The sailing history of England.
D.The sailing story of British sailors.
23.(8分)The pills we take to treat anxiety may affect the behavior of fish, new research in the journal Science suggests.
Swedish researchers found a common drug in rivers downstream of wastewater treatment plants. It is a drug for treating anxiety, called oxazepam. It is accumulating in fish and makes them bolder. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to get rid of drugs. As a result, the drugs end up in wildlife, reaching harmful levels.
“It’s something we don’t think about very often, but there are a lot of similarities between fish and humans. So some of our responses to drugs can be seen in fish as well,” said Karen Kidd. She is a biologist at the University of New Brunswick, Canada. The mood-altering drugs get into waterways when people taking the prescriptions throw unused pills into the waste stream.
The researchers let perch(鲈鱼)swim in lab tanks with concentrations similar to those found downstream from wastewater treatment plants. “The perch preferred to swim alone rather than in large groups. They were more likely to explore their environment,” said Micael Jonsson of Umeå University in Sweden, who helped l ead the research.
Jonsson said, “This adventurous behavior required more energy. And they ate more plankton(浮游生物), or tiny algae-eating animals, to guarantee enough energy for their activities. This could reduce the population of plankton.” The result could be more algae(水藻). On the other hand, the new behavior could lead to the opposite effect. If perch make themselves closer to their natural enemies, they are likely to be eaten by them.
None of the scientists is suggesting that people should give up these drugs. They just want to reduce the effects of the medicines on the environment. They recommend
wastewater treatment plants should be redesigned to get rid of these medicines. But Kidd said that would be too expensive for some communities.
Bryan Brooks, director of the Environmental Health Science Program at Baylor University, said drugs could also be designed to break down more quickly in the environment. And the government could continue to run recycling programs where people drop off their unused drugs at government loca tions. Brooks said he’s particularly concerned about drug effects on aquatic(水生的)environments, like the Trinity River south of Dallas and the South Platte River near Denver, where the majority of the flow comes from treated wastewater. In the developing world, he said, the problem may be even worse, because of careless wastewater treatment and industrial regulations.

D.Their natural enemies will be stronger.
3、What would be the best title for the passage?
A.More wastewater treatment plants are needed
B.Fish in wastewater become more adventurous
C.Drugs for treating mental diseases end up in wildlife
D.Anxiety drugs found in rivers change the behavior of fish
24.(8分)Since App Store was set up, it has been selling consumers one simple thing choice. Whether you wanted to play games, read the news, or do a thousand other things, there was something for whatever you desired.
Then something funny happened. Logging into the App Store today is like going into a shopping mall with only a coupon(优惠券) for one thing: There’s so much choice; it might be easier to give up than to choose.
It isn’t consumers who are burdened, though. Too much content of all kinds also has economic effects. When countless choices are available, it causes pressure, pushing
prices down and driving us a bit crazy.
So what is the way forward? It may well be to turn less choice itself to the marketing strategy. There are already signs that this is happening. Firstly content companies are looking to prevent their offerings from getting lost in the tons of stuff. Most obvious is Disney, which is planning to open its own streaming service next year. The point is to narrow the focus so that those seeking Disney cartoons will have one place to go, rather than being around various services.
Yet if that represents a careful first step, there are more extreme options too. Consider the idea of a wine club: from tens of thousands of bottles each year, subscribers pay someone to select the most interesting ones. Perhaps what comes next for digital content is similar-carefully selected offerings from trusted sources that put choices in the hands of someone else in order to get rid of the anxiety of choosing.
Up to now, too much choice in digital media has only one solution: the algorithm (运算法则).But we've seen the trouble with algorithms on You Tube They feed you only what you’ve already said you like, not things you may not know you re into. Worse, they have a tendency to serve up disturbing content he way forward cant simply be more or better algorithms.
Instead, it's time for digital companies to start thinking about how to put limits on things: on how much we can use a device, or what we are available to choose from.
As we move further into the digital revolution, what people ask for is clear: Less. 1、What will too much choice of content on the market result in?
A.The shutdown of companies B.The anxiety of consumers
C.The poor quality of products D.The slowdown of economy
2、Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraphs 4 and 5? A.Content companies should withdraw their offerings online
B.Content companies should post their offerings on App Store
C.Content companies adopt different methods to narrow the consumers focus D.Content companies open their own streaming services on You Tube
3、How do algorithms probably respond to consumers needs?
A.They make a better choice for them B.They help to remove disturbing content C.They change their interest in digital media D.They fail to offer what they possibly like
4、What is the authors attitude towards limiting the choice consumers have A.Approving. B.Skeptical
C.Opposing. D.Neutral
25.(10分)The computer mouse is familiar to everyone because it is a most useful device used by people to communicate with a desktop computer. It gave way to the touch pad(触摸板)for laptops but some people still use it for their laptops.
The man who invented the computer mouse, Douglas Engelbart died at home on July 2, 2013.Engelbart’s daughter Christina notified his death to the state’s Computer History Museum in an email. She said that her father had kidney failure and died peacefully on Tuesday night in his sleep.
Engelbart developed the mouse in the 1960s—a wooden shell covering two meal wheels, obtaining a patent for it long before the mouse’s widespread use.
Engelbart was born on January 30, 1925 in Portland, Oregon, to a radio repairman father and a housewife mother. He was working in a government aerospace laboratory in California when he had the vision of the computer mouse.
When he started working, the computer was at the infant stage and was a big machine that required huge amounts of time to process data. But Engelbart had already imagined the future of the computer and related technology. He was ahead of many scientists working on the same technology.
After the Vietnam War he started working on the interactive computer at an experimental research group at Stanford Research Institute, which had the financial backing of the Air Force, NASA and the Advanced Research Projects Agency, an arm of the Defense Department.
In 1968at a conference, he demonstrated a working model of a mouse, computer and keyboard that was used to share data on network. He demonstrated text editing, video conferencing and hypertext. His idea of computer network was the base and first step towards ARPANET.
He never made money with the invention of the mouse as his patent was till 1987 and the mouse came into wide use after the 1980s when Steve Jobs of Apple bought one button mouse. Apple never paid any money to Engelbart.
1、With the development of science and technology ________.
