Go ahead and touch, says the Louvre
The Louvre’s Tactile Gallery, targeted to the blind and visually impaired,is the only space in the museum where visitors can touch the sculptures, with no guards or alarms to stop them. Its
latest exhibit is a crowd-pleaser:a menagerie (兽群,动物园) of sculpted lions, snakes, horses and eagles.
The 15 bronze, plaster and terra-cotta animals are reproductions of famous works found elsewhere in the Louvre.Called “Animals,Symbols of Power,” the exhibit focuses on animals that were used by kings, emperors and pharaohs throughout history to symbolize the greatness of their reigns.
Though the gallery was conceived for the blind and visually impaired, children and other visitors can also enjoy it.During guided tours on the weekends, children can wear blindfolds and explore the art.
The Louvre opened the Tactile Gallery in 2019.Though other French cultural exhibits offer periodic events and programs for the blind, the Louvre says it is the only museum in France with
a gallery specifically set up for the visually impaired. Ancona,Italy and Athens,Greece have entire tactile museums.
“There’s real ly a way to learn how to touch, with habits to learn,” said Cyrille Gouyette, the co-head of the Louvre’s gallery. Some people run their hands over the works,he said, and some even knock on them to understand the material of which they’re made.
He sa id the exhibit on animals strives to “use the sense of touch to make people think”.
The exhibit displays statues of Charlemagne and French King Louis XIV astride (骑着) their horses,a pose that raised the rulers and made them look more imposing (令人难忘的).
It also features a reproduction of a Napoleonic eagle.Napoleon chose the eagle as an insignia (徽章) because he was inspired by Ancient Rome’s use of the bird as a sign of its military might.
First-time visitor Didier Roule, who was accompanied by his seeing-eye dog, said the visually impaired “are certainly more attentive to some details...and we can feel things through the materials”.

Most people consider skydiving (高空跳伞) a product of the 20th century, but its history actually goes further back than that. The Chinese attempted parachuting (跳伞) in the 10th century,a thousand years before we did.The Chinese did what we would today call base diving;that is,they jumped off a place that would allow them to float from a height to the ground.
The first person to attempt to parachute was a Frenchman named Jacques Garnerin. He jumped from his air balloon at the end of the 18th century and did tricks on the way down and stupefied the crowds by landing safely on the ground. At the end of the 19th century, Kathie Paulus, a brave German woman, became famous for her skydiving skills.
Once the airplane was invented, skydiving took on a whole new form. The airplane made it possible to dive from greater heights at greater speeds, allowing for more range in the movements in the air.A woman named Tiny Broadwick became the first woman to jump from a plane in 1913 and to dive free fall in 1914.
Skydiving was not called skydiving until the middle of the 1950s, when Ronald Young coined(创造)the word.It had been called parachuting prior to this and was primarily used by the military to land troops in inland locations, or for pilots to bail (跳伞) out of their planes when necessary.Once World War Ⅰ was over, parachuting became a sport, which we now call skydiving.
After World War Ⅱ, this activity became more a hobby than a military maneuver(行
动).Soldiers were trained in parachuting and enjoyed the thrill so much that they continued on for fun. From this, teams and competitions were formed.Skydiving schools appeared in the late
1950s and now it is a recognized extreme sport enjoyed by many.
