What Kind of Pet Should I Get?
Pets are so much fun! Having an animal friend to play with and take care of is one of the best parts of being a kid. But deciding what type of pet to get can be really hard. There are so many different animals that make good pets. How do you choose?
I've been bugging my parents for months to let me get a pet. At first, I really wanted a puppy because puppies are so cute and cuddly. Plus, you can take dogs for walks and they are really energetic and playful. That would be perfect for an active kid like me!
But then I started thinking about how much work puppies are. They need to be taken outside to go potty like every few hours, even in the middle of the night. You have to clean up their messes in the house before they are fully potty trained. And
puppies love to chew on things, so you'd have to be really careful about leaving any toys, shoes, or anything else lying around that they could destroy.
That's when I started looking into getting a cat instead. Cats are very independent and low maintenance compared to dogs. You don't have to take them for walks since they use a litter box inside. And cats are fine just chilling and napping a lot of the time instead of needing constant activity and playtime like dogs.
The problem with cats though, is that they can be kind of moody and unfriendly. Sure, some cats love cuddles and are super sweet. But a lot of cats just like to keep to themselves and can even be mean, scratching and biting if you bother them too much. As a kid who wants a snuggly pet to be best buds with, that could be an issue.
So then I thought, why not a pet that is really friendly and doesn't need as much work as a dog, but is also more social than a cat? That's when I learned about small pets like guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and rabbits!
These little critters are perfect for kids, in my opinion. They stay in compact cages or pens so they don't need a whole house to roam and make messes like a cat or dog would. You don't have to take them for walks either, but you do get to spend
quality time each day playing with them, feeding them, cleaning their home, and having them out to snuggle and run around in a safe, enclosed area.
Guinea pigs in particular seem like a fantastic option. They are bigger than hamsters or gerbils, but still pretty low maintenance. And most importantly, they have really friendly personalities! Guinea pigs love to be held and cuddled, they are curious and like to explore when let out to play, and they are usually pretty easy-going.
One downside is that guinea pigs are social animals, so you can't just get one as a lone pet. They really should have a guinea pig buddy to keep them company so they don't get lonely. That means having two guinea pig cages and doubling up on supplies. It's twice as much work, but really not that much more difficult than taking care of just one.
Another idea I've thought about is getting pet rats! I know what you're thinking - rats? Those aren't pets, they're pests! But actually, there are special varieties of rats that make amazing pocket pets. They are highly intelligent and can even be taught tricks. Pet rats also bond really closely with their owners and love playing outside of their cage, climbing on you, and cuddling.
The big downside to pet rats is that you have to get a same-sex pair or group since they are very social. And their lifespan is only a couple years, so as attached as you get to your ratty friends, you'll have to go through the heartbreak of losing them pretty quickly compared to other pets.
Fish are another good option for a first pet. An aquarium with some colorful fish could be really relaxing to watch and take care of. But at the same time, fish aren't exactly cuddly, fun pets to play with like a furry critter.
Some other unique pets I've considered are bearded dragons, snakes, frogs, or ferrets. Those could be really cool and different! But those animals require very specific habitats and care that could be pretty challenging, especially for a kid's first pet.
At the end of the day, I think a guinea pig or a pair of rats might be the perfect starter pet for me. Those allow me to have an animal buddy to snuggle and play with, without being too overwhelming with training and care like a dog.
