A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, an d it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.
Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to main tain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate.
You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly(刺痛的) or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis(麻痹) in the legs, ankles, or feet.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
21. Why does crossing your legs when sitting increase blood pressure?

D. It works against resistance of blood.

Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease(运动神经细胞病) to communicate with others from a phone. It combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and c onvert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not steady under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration(再校准) and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To relieve the drawbacks…we created GazeSp eak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, stable, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids(格子) of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.
24.It can be learned from the passage that GazeSpeak ______.
A. is expensive, and doesn’t work well in sunlight.
B. is portable and comparatively cheap.
C. requires frequent improving and easy to learn.
D. costs low and is a relatively immobile setup.
25. How does GazeSpeak work according to Xiaoyi Zhang?
A. It uses artificial intelligence to turn eye movements into speech.
B. It can understand what is being said by eye-signals.
C. It uses boards displaying letters in different grids of letters.
D. It uses software to track eye movements with cameras.
26. What is the main purpose of the passage?

B. To make a new smartphone known to the world.
C. To attract people to buy a new smartphone.
D. To promote the sale of a smartphone app.

On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. It seemed like the strongest place in our town house to wait things out. I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. I tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.
By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and head skins were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his
feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.”
27. How did they know the tornado was coming first ?
A. From the TV Channel they were watching.
B. From Jimmy’s glancing at the scrolling news on the TV
C. Changing the channel to local Pensacola, Florida station.

28. What does the underlined sentence indicate?

B. The storm was the most dangerous thing the author had ever heard.
C. The author felt as if there were no floor underneath her.
D. The author was nervous enough to keep herself in place.
29. Which of the following is the right order to describe the story?
a. A three-foot-long tree branch dropped in front of us.
b. Jimmy ran upstairs to tell me what was happening.
c. We tried our best to go downstairs
d. Jimmy decided to go outdoors to check the storm
A. a-c-d-b
B. b-c- a-d
C. c-a-d-b
D. d-a-c-b
30. What might be followed up closely according to the story?

Over the past few years, there has been a big increase in the number of people sharing information online. In this article, we will learn about some positive factors for people to share information online.
94% of those who responded to a survey by The New York Times said they put a lot of thought into how the content they are sharing will be beneficial to others. We often share information with our friends in the office or at home to educate, entertain, or pleasantly surprise them. In this way , we can connect with others. This is also true while sharing information online. If you look at the Facebook of your friends, you will realize that most of their updates are usually famous quotes, entertaining videos, inspirational images, funny jokes, etc.
A lot of people share information online to picture their true self to the outside world. Some people, especially those who are shy and not comfortable talking about their areas of interest in the presence of others, find it extremely convenient to share that information online with like-minded individuals.
According to the study of The New York Times, 78% of the respondents said they shared information online because it helps them develop better relationships. Today, people are so busy that they do not have the time to meet each other in person, and the Internet has become a great substitute. A lot of people now “meet” each other online, rather than in conventional places like restaurants and pubs.
Lastly, when we share our thoughts online, we are actively engaging with a large number of people who are a part of the World Wide Web. Sharing information will make a difference to viewpoint of others, or add to their understanding about the world.

Doctors at the famous Cambridge University think that hip hop can help depressed and mentally ill people. They say with “hip hop therapy”, many of the words to the hip hop songs can reach out to people with emotional problems. A team of doctors wrote a report about this in a special medical magazine. The doctors said a lot of hip hop music speaks of getting
over hardships and big difficulties in life. In particular, hip hop talks about being poor, being unpopular, and about crime and drugs. These are all problems that can lead to depression and mental illnesses. The report on hip hop and mental health says hip hop artists use their talents to describe their world and be free. There’s often a message of hope in the lyrics. They describe how they want to be---the cars they want, the people they want to date. The doctors chose five hip hop songs for the therapy. One is a classic 1982 tune by Grandmaster Flash. Another is a track called “Juicy” by the Notorious BIG. This tells people they c an be successful even if others say they can’t. BIG explains how teachers said he would be nothing, but then he became a superstar.
