13、The following are some tips for becoming a successful businessman by Michael Bloomberg. They are based on his experience of building a company from the ground up, leading New York City as mayor(市长), and so on.
Take Risks
Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.
In 1981, at the age of 39, I lost my job. The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001, when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it. But one person said, “If you can imagine yourself giving a concession(败选)speech, then why not go for it?” That was the best advice I received, and I followed it. In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail— and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.
Make your own luck
Luck plays a part in success. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
Whatever you choose to do, even if it’s not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it. Be the first person at work
in the morning and the last to leave at night. Hard work creates chances.
Never stop learning
The most powerful word in English language is “why”. There is nothing so powerful
as an open, inquiring mind(探究精神). Whatever field you choose for starting a business — be a lifelong student. Give back
You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.
My first donation was a $ 5 check to my alma mater (母校). And while the checks(支票)may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.
You don’t have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by giving your time and talents.

14、Are you a gourmand(美食主义者)? Do you want to eat every delicious food in the world? Then do you watch the popular progr am?“A Bite of China(舌尖上的中国)” is a documentary on Chinese delicious food which has been broadcasted by Chinese central television. Is there any holiday that isn't celebrated with a special festival food? Here are several traditional Chinese foods:
Eggs hold a special meaning in many cultures, and China is no exception(例外). The Chinese believe eggs mean producing something new. After a baby is born, parents may hold a "red egg and ginger party," where they pass out eggs to announce the birth. In some areas of China the number of eggs represents the sex of the child, for example, an even number(1,3,5,---) for a girl, and an odd number(2,4,6---) if a boy has been born.
Noodles are a symbol of longlife in Chinese culture. They are as much a part of a Chinese birthday celebration as a birthday cake with lit candles is in many countries. Since noodles represent long life, it is considered very unlucky to cut it off.
Although westerners sometimes may be very sorry to see fish lying on a plate, in China a whole fish is a symbol of richness. In fact, at a party it is traditional to serve the whole fish last, pointed toward the valued guest. Fish also has a special meaning because the Chinese word for fish, yu, sounds like the word for richness or plenty, and it is believed that eating fish will help your wishes come true in the year to come.
A very popular dish during the Dragon Boat Festival is Zongzi. This tasty dish is made of rice dumplings with meat, peanut or other delicious food in bamboo leaves. 16、Have you seen Avatar? It’s a popular movie this year. It is three-dimensional(3D), so you may have to wear a special pair of glasses to see it. The 3D glasses make the images(图像) from the movie look like they are coming straight at you. More and more 3D movies are coming to theaters. 3D TV sets have been produced in Japan now. Three-dimensional
technology can make TV and movies more exciting. But people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3D movies.
When we look at an object(物体), each eye sees it at a different angle(角度). Our eyes send the two images to our
brain(大脑), and the brain puts them toge ther. That’s how we see depth(深度). So when we watch a 3D movie, one film projector(投影机) projects a left eye image and the other projects a right eye image. 3D glasses allow us to see a different image in each eye.
There are a lot of people walking around with very less serious eye problems. Under normal situations, the brain can adjust to their eyes so they can see things normally.
But when they are watching a 3D movie, the images projected to their eyes can’t be put together by their brain. So the brain needs to work harder at reading the images. That makes it easier for these people to get headaches.
Dr John Hagan, an eye doctor in Kansas City, said some people who do not see depth normally cannot see in 3D at all. 1.When people want to watch a three-dimensional movie, they need .

A.In the near future, people can enjoy 3D movie by watching TV at home.
B.Whenever you wear a 3D glasses, you can see objects more clearly.
C.People who have something wrong with their brain can’t read the images of 3D movie.
5.The main idea of this passage is .

B.3D glasses make the movie seem alive
C.not everybody can enjoy 3D movies.

17、Sometimes we wish that we could have more time. The good news is that this year will be longer than the previous! Although don’t get excited just yet, because if you blink (眨眼), you may just miss it. That’s because 2015 will be one second longer than 2014 -also known as a leap second (闰秒). And surprisingly, they are pretty common. But why do we need them?
Over the centuries, Earth has been slowing down. This means that we must keep changing our clocks to keep in step
with Earth’s time. We’ve all heard of leap years. Our calendars hold 365 days in a year. Yet Earth takes slightly longer to orbit the sun. So we save this time and every 4 years we have an extra day in February.
As for the leap seconds, the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) manages the global time, known as the atomic time(原子钟时间). This is the timekeeping that’s used for every single country.
To keep up with Earth’s time, they add a second every now and then. They’ve been doing this since 1972. And this year will be the 26th second they’ve added!
It’ll be added just before 8:00 a.m. on July 1 Beijing time. So you will see 7:59:60 on July 1.
Although adding a second sounds harmless, it can have negative effects. In 2012 when a leap second was added, it caused probl ems for companies like social networking sites Reddit and LinkedIn. As they weren’t prepared for the change, it caused their computers to record errors.
1.Why does a leap second have to be added in some years?
A.Because this year is shorter than the previous one. B.Because we need to have more time.
C.Because the Earth is slowing down. D.Because it can help make a leap year.
2.In a leap year, there is an extra day in_____.
A.January B.February C.March D.December
3.In order to keep up with Ear th’s time, how many seconds have been added until last year?
A.43 B.42 C.26 D.25
4.What’s the negative effect of adding a leap second?
A.It makes the day longer than the previous one. B.It causes some recording errors for companies.
C.It makes people stay up late. D.It does harm to people’s health.

18、I will never forget my experiences in the United States. I went to an American college a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court(法院).
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was amazed. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible(负有责任的) for my accident, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first
time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to refuse his help. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. I told the insurance(保险)company the date I was leaving America because of my inexperience(缺少经验). Knowing that, they played for time and I left without getting a cent.
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

C.he knew the doctor was a very good one D.he wanted the writer to have a good lawyer
2.A good lawyer is important for the writer to __________.
A.be well treated by the doctor B.talk with the person responsible for the accident
C.get what he should be paid for his injury D.get well before he leaves that country.
3.Both the doctor and the lawyer in this passage are very__________.
A.selfish B.friendly C.rude D.busy
4.The underlined word “charge” in the second paragraph means ______.
A.职责B.掌管C.索价D.命令
5.What conclusion can you draw from the story?
A.Going to court is something very common in America.
B.One must be very careful while driving a car.
