21.(6分)With smart technology increasingly influencing all aspects of our lives, it is only a matter of time before someone invents “smart” shoes—ones that can be made based on personal ne eds. Called “ShiftWear”, the sneakers are the brainchild of a team of businessmen, and engineers led by New York-based designer David Coel.
The adaptable shoes can be customized by using a smart phone app. Shoe owners will have the option of selecting a design from a variety of HD pattern by famous artists or creating one themselves. The company’s founders imagine a marketplace where artists can not only share but also sell their designs to others. Despite being electronic, the designs are clearly visible e ven in the brightest sunlight. What’s even cooler is that by switching on a backlight, users can even show off their designs in the dark!
According to Coel, the sneakers will keep their charge “forever” if only images are displayed. Though they will need periodic recharging, active users have nothing to worry about. That’s because the shoes are equipped with special walk-n-charge technology that powers the shoes—with every step. Inactive users also have options of charging the sneakers without using wires.
The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevler fibers, a kind of strong material, reducing normal wear and tear. Even better? They are completely waterproof (not let water through) and can even be thrown into an ordinary laundry machine for a quick wash! The company predicts that the shoes will range the price from $150 to $1000 depending on the size of the E-panels where the designs are displayed.
This is not the first time that electronics and shoes have combined. Lithuania-based iShuh Technology has come up with a similar concept that connects e-reader panels to a smart phone app via the Bluetooth. Whether these smart shoes become as popular as our smart devices remains to be seen, though they surely are attractive.
1、What can we know about the smart shoes from the text?
A.The electronic designs can not be seen clearly at night.
B.The designers make sure every pair of sneakers are unique.
C.The bottom of the shoes can last longer due to special materials.
D.The shoes have to be washed by hand to protect the electronics.
2、What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.How the sneakers are charged.
B.How the sneakers can work well.
C.What images the sneakers show.
D.What technology the sneakers carry.
3、The varied prices of the sneakers mainly depend on ________.
A.the length of the shoes
B.the size of their e-panels
C.the designers of the shoes
D.the materials of their bottoms
4、How does the author feel about the sneakers’ future market?
A.Negative. B.Anxious.
C.Uncertain. D.Confident.

Australian magpies can understand what other birds are saying to each other, a new study has found.
The research, published in the journal Animal Behavior, says the magpie has learned the meanings of different noisy miner calls and essentially eavesdrops(偷听) to find out which predators(食肉动物) are near.
Noisy miners----a small, native honeyeater----have different warning calls for ground-based and aerial(飞行的)predators. By playing both kinds of recording to a series of wild magpies, researchers observed the magpies raising their beaks(喙) to the sky, or dropping their heads to the ground.
Researchers attracted the magpies with cheese, then played the noisy miner calls, videotaping the results.
As a control, they also rolled a large orange ball towards the magpies to see how they ordinarily tilted(倾斜) their beaks to ground threats, and threw the ball to see how they reacted to aerial threats.
The researchers recorded an average maximum beak angle of 29 degrees for the thrown ball, and an average maximum of nine degrees when it was rolled.
The miners’ aerial warning caused an average maximum beak angle of 31 degrees, and the ground warning caused an average maximum of 24.
One of the study’s authors, Dominique Potvin, said the magpies showed an astonishing level of insight.
Magpies and miners broadly face the same types of predators and the two frequently live in the same ecosystem.
Potvin said this had encouraged the magpies’ learned behavior.
“Magpies are generally found on the ground and noisy miners are generally found up in trees. It pays for the magpie to pay attention to somebody who has a better view of predators than they do.”
She said it was unclear whether other birds could do the same, but it was highly likely other magpies around Australia already did.
“Magpies are a pretty smart group. We’re not sure if they’re learning this from other magpies or if they’re figuring it out on their own, but the ability is there.
As part of the experiment, researchers also played a third call: a common,
non-warning call from a crimson rosella. They found the magpies did not respond.
Potvin said that we had been actively exploring animal cognition(认知) research. “It’s a good piece of the puzzle,” Potvin said. “Looking at the social relationships between species that live in communities.”
1、What have the researchers found about Australian magpies?
A.They can understand other bird calls.
B.They can communicate with noisy miners.
C.They have a special preference for cheeses.
D.They have the ability to warn the predators.
2、How did the researchers get their findings?
A.By calculating the beak angles of aerial and ground predators.
B.By comparing the magpie and the miner responses to threats.
C.By monitoring the magpie responses to the miner warning calls.
D.By recording the magpie louder scream for other birds’ attention.
3、The magpies’ cognition can help them _____.
A.have a better view of the predators than the miners
B.better protect themselves from the potential threats
C.cooperate with other birds to drive away the predators
D.live in harmony with other birds in the same ecosystem
4、We can learn from the passage that _____.
A.the magpies are smart learners of other birds’ behaviour
B.it’s likely that other birds have developed the same ability
C.the findings have clarified the relationships between species
D.a lot more remains to be explored about animal cognition

(8分)Li Ping, a college student has been experiencing social awkwardness since her junior middle school years. Back then, she felt unease about going to the restroom alone. She ev en limited the amount of water she drank so she didn’t have to go there often. “I feared that other students would think that I didn’t get along well with others if I was seen alone,” she said. Li is not the only sufferer of what* s called “social anxiety”.
China Youth Daily recently did a survey among 1,4 people. Nearly half (44. 6 percent) of the participants admitted that they were afraid of being the center of attention. Up to 66.7 percent of them said they are more likely to be anxious during face-to-face communications than in online conversations. But these feelings are not necessarily anything to worry about. “There is ‘social anxiety’, and there is ‘social anxiety disorder’ or ‘social phobia’. They are two completely different things.” said Li Songwei, a psychological professor at Tsinghua University.
According to Thomas Rodebaugh, a psychology professor at Washington University in St Louis, US, almost everyone suffers from at least a little social anxiety. “For example, we may get it before speaking in public, or have a bad night’s sleep if there is going to be an important interview the next day. But when does social anxiety develop into a disorder? There are two simple questions you can ask yourself if you’re concerned—‘How much does the anxiety affect my life?’ and ‘Is it acceptable?’ If the condition becomes so problematic and you refuse to go out at all and cannot live a normal life, you just need to seek treatment.” he notes.
But for common social anxiety, people all have their different coping strategies. “The way I employ is reason plus reward,” said Wang Li, another once-sufferer. For example, she tells herself that there is no such thing as right or wrong when pushing yourself to speak publicly: there are only people who agree with you or not. And if she conquers her fear, she buys new shoes or goes to see a movie after class.
1、The first paragraph is mainly used to .
A.make a comparison B.teach a new word “social anxiety”
C.draw a conclusion D.introduce a phenomenon
2、What may Thomas Rodebaugh agree with?
A.Social anxiety is a deadly problem. B.Social anxiety is a rare problem. C.Little attention is paid to social anxiety. D.Not all social anxiety needs treatment.
3、The underlined word “employ” in Paragraph 4 is closest in me aning to the one in “”.
A.I want to employ Weibo as a means to practice my writing
B.More than 40 university graduates were employed
C.The children employed themselves in painting
D.He employed me as a secretary
4、What can we infer from the text?
A.Some participants feel easier in online communications.
B.Social anxiety is regarded as social phobia.
C.Li Ping didn’t often go to the restroom because she didn’t like drinking water. D.Wang Li dealt with social anxiety only by rewarding herself.
24.(8分)These days everyone is worried about the size of their carbon footprint. In order to reduce global warming, we need to make our carbon footprints smaller. But how much CO are we responsible for?
A new book by Mike Berners-Lee (a leading expert in carbon foot-printing) might be able to help. The Carbon Foot print of Everything looks at the different things we do and buy, and calculates the amount of CO2 they produce, including the ingredients, the electricity, the equipment, the transport and the packaging. And it’s frightening how much carbon dioxide everything produces.
But all of this can help us decide which beer to drink. From Berners-Lee’s calculations, it’s clear that a pint (568 ml) of locally-brewed (酿制的) beer has a smaller
carbon footprint than a bottle of imported beer. This is because the imported beer has been transported from far away, and it uses more packaging. The local beer only produces 300 g of CO2-but the imported beer produces 900 g! So, one pint of local beer is better for the environment than three cans of cheap foreign beer from the supermarket.
Berners-Lee has even calculated the carbon footprint of cycling to work. Nothing is more environmentally - friendly than riding a bike, surely? Well, it depends on what you’ve had to eat befor e. To ride a bike we need energy and for energy we need food. So, if we eat a banana and then ride a kilometer and a half, our footprint is 65 g of CO2. However, if we eat bacon before the bike ride, it’s 200 g. In fact, bananas are good in general because they don’t need packaging. They can be transported by boat and they grow in natural sunlight.
So, does this mean that cycling is bad for the environment? Absolutely not. If you cycle, you don t use your car; and the fewer cars on the road, the fewer traffic jams. And cars in traffic jams produce three times more CO2 than cars travelling at speed. Cycling also makes you healthy and less likely to go to a hospital. And hospitals have very big carbon footprints!
So, maybe it’s time for us all to start making some changes. Pass me a banana and a pint of local beer, please.
1、Which of the followings produces the smallest carbon footprints?
A.A pint of local beer.
B.A bottle of imported beer.
C.A banana before a 1.5 km bike ride.
D.Bacon before a 1.5 km bike ride.
2、According to the article, the author suggests choosing the local food because it is
________.
A.more tasty B.easier to buy
C.better packaged D.more energy-saving
3、The purpose of writing this article is to ________.
A.promote a new book
B.advertise the imported beer
C.instruct how to measure the carbon footprint
D.encourage people to reduce the production of CO2

I am excited to hear that you and your family will visit Beijing soon. I really can't wait to see you guys. Since this is your first visit to China, I imagine you might want to experience some Chinese history and culture. I would recommend you visit the Forbidden City first.
The Forbidden City is in the center of Beijing city. It served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
