I was born in England with perfect hearing. In 1990, when I was five, my family moved to the United States. I started getting ear infections (感染), but my parents couldn’t afford the treatment. I went deaf in my right ear and was left with 50 percent hearing in my left. Several years later, my remaining hearing dropped to 20 percent, where it is today. My doctors predicted that I would be pletely deaf by now. There was always music playing in my house. My dad was a DJ and I like music. For my 18th birthday, my dad asked me to be a DJ at his restaurant. After doing that for a few weeks, I liked it so much that I wanted to learn more. So I invited a famous DJ to teach me, and he taught me for two years. I practiced four hours a day. Now when I’m performing, muscle memory takes over.
When I started being a DJ, I would just show up, and start playing music. At the end of the night, someone would say, “Oh, here’s the tip.” And I’d sa y, “What? Oh, I can’t hear.” They were always so surprised. Sometimes I would bring a doctor’s notes because they wouldn’t believe me.
For a show, I set up the speaker(扬声器) that plays the bass on the floor behind me so I can feel the beat in my feet. I use software that turns the music into lines of color on a puter screen. I’m visually hearing the music.
I also go to schools for the deaf and talk to the students about believing in themselves. I like to talk to the parents. I tell them, “My advice to you is to let your kids chase their dreams. I’m a deaf DJ, so why not?”
21. The author _______________.
A. was already deaf when he moved to the US
B. has only 20-percent hearing in the left ear now
C. lost 80 percent of his hearing when he was five years old.
D. will be able to hear perfectly again after treatment next year.
22. When did the author start to be a DJ?
A. In 1990.
B. In 1995.
C. In xx.
D. In xx.
23. Why did the author show a doctor’s notes to people?
A. Because people didn’t believe the author was a DJ.
B. Because the author wanted to impress them.
C. Because the author wanted to seek people’s sympathy.
D. Because people couldn’t believe such a good DJ was deaf.
B
Throughout history, interesting and elegant hairstyles have always been important to women. From the hairstyles of ancient Egyptian women to the popular hairstyles of today, it is certainly true that hairstyles change as time goes by.
1910s
The hairstyles of the Victorian era were very popular with the French. The idea of parting one’s hair down the middle, wearing one’s hair in long curls, and decorating the head with flowers was considered fashionable at the time. However, the transition(转变)from the Victorian era into the 1910s inspired less refined (改良的)hairstyles. The desire for free-flowing hair slowly became admired as time passed.
1930s
The 1930s marked a huge shift in how women styled their hair. The hairstyles of this decade were affected by the events that were going on in the world. The great depression(经济大萧条) was underway, and women couldn’t afford to have a stylist, so they became more creative. Finger waves became very popular because you were able to do this hairstyle with your fingers.
1950s
The 1950s hairstyle was mainly about long and soft curls; no one wanted straight hair. Jackie Kennedy and Lucille Ball were two celebrities who inspired many women in the 50s. The bouffant(蓬松发式)was one of the most popular hairstyles during this time.
1990s
The hairstyle of the 1990s was very different. A more relaxed look was what women pursued during this time, and at the end of the decade many women drew inspiration
from Jennifer Aniston’s hairstyle. Shorter, looser hair was what women wanted, whether their hair was up, down, informal or formal.
24. The hairstyles of the 1930s were most affected by ___________.
A. personal preference

D. The hairstyle trend of the 1990s can be described as the “the shorter, the better”.
27. Where would you be most likely to find this text?

Recent studies show that 90% of teenage girls around the world want to bee models. They want to walk on the platform in Milan and have photo shoots with the best photographers in the world.
But to do all this, girls have to go to the gym for training from an early age.

With some of the best farmland in the world, America has been able to perfect its process of raising crops and animals. America’s history with farming is as long as the story of the country.
The first settlers to America were interested in the profitability of raising a crop rather than just growing it to feed themselves. In Jamestown, the first cash crop was tobacco. Adaptable and easily managed, tobacco gave its settlers financial backing to move into other areas of agriculture. Until the Civil War, the Southeast was the primary producer of crops from their tobacco and cotton plantations.
With the Homestead Act, settlers began to move west in search of greater lands. The first crop that was generally introduced was wheat. Miles of farmland were established, and products such as corn, tomatoes, peanuts and potatoes became basic crops for the country. The Hatch Act of 1887 put a priority(优先事项)on establishing
to produce more products and feed the country. The family farm was born from this law.
Because of the Dust Bowl problem and the Depression, much of the farmland developed in earlier times was abandoned(抛弃). However, after World War II, orders were issued to make use of every available piece of land for production. Over the next few decades, greater emphasis on environmental concerns played a key role in farming.
Now there are many different types of farms in America. The most popular one is the cash grain farm, specializing in corn and soybeans with various grains, beans and rice. Farms that grow vegetables, fruit and nursery crops are known as high value farms. Tobacco and cotton farms are usually kept to lands of their own. In addition to all the food that is grown, there are the livestock(牲畜) farms that raise cattle, dairy and eggs.

范文:
Dear Editor,
To respond to Sunshine Sports Activities launched by the Ministry of Education, our school has organized long-distance running during the long break. However, we students have different opinions about it.
Many of the students are in favor of the program. They think running is good to build them up. Besides, it can help them to relax and release the pressure of study.
However, other students think differently. They claim that they feel very tired
after running, so they have difficulty concentrating on their lessons. Besides, they sweat so heavily after running that it is easy to catch a cold.
I think it’s beneficial for students to take regular physical exercise because they spent most of their time sitting in the classroom. Long-distance running is an effective way to keep fit. However, other ways of exercising should be provided for students, too.
Do you agree with me?
Your,
Li Hua
