14、Most of us have ever imagined the life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise(天堂) where the sun always shines. Life there is simple and good. Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you are free to sit around without any work. This is really a beautiful picture, isn’t it? However, the other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is awful. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes.
Perhaps there is some truth in both these pictures, but few us have had the chance to find out. We can only experience it in the story like the following.
Many years ago, two men spent five days on a coral island and they wished that they could stay there longer. They were driving a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink(下沉). They quickly put food, matches, and cans of beer into a rubber dinghy(救生筏) and rowed for a few miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island.
There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not seem to be a problem. The men
collected rainwater in the rubber dinghy. As they had brought a gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and fish every day, and they thought they lived just like a king. Five days later, a tank passed by and saved them. However, they felt sorry that they had to leave.

Frowning, he began peeling the soggy milk-soaked bread (浸透牛奶的) from his sandwich. “This is the worst thing I’ve ever done!” he said, “It’s not that bad,” said his friend Elena, who was sitting across from him. “Just get another sandwich.”
“Sandwich? What sandwich? I am talking about the talent contest. It’s only two weeks away and I don’t know what I’m doing! Everybody will laugh at me. There’s no way to avoid it!”

16、People have understood that kindness is good for the person who receives help. For example,
when we give food to a hungry person,he is lucky. However, scientists have recently begun to study the effect(影响)of
the kindness on the person giving it. What they have found is that doing good is good for the doer(行为者).Acts of kindness can improve health, help a person reach goals and even add years to a person's life.
The first study to show the connection between doing good and living a long life was a study on aging(衰老). Beginning in 1956,scientists studied a group of married mothers for 30 years. They thought the women with the most children would die first. But the number of children a woman had did not matter. Wealth did not matter. Education did not matter. What did matter was whether they volunteered. Women that volunteered had fewer diseases during their life. Many other studies have found the same positive(积极的)effects. Helping other people improves long-term health. The gains are the same for men, women, old people and the young. Those who volunteered had fewer serious diseases than those who did not volunteer. This included diseases such as heart attack, cancer and stroke.
Scientists are studying many possible causes. One possible cause is an increase in antibodies(抗体),which help fight against disease. One study showed the body produces more antibodies after an act of kindness.
Another one is an increase in Oxytocin(催生素),it is a chemical that fights the effects of stress from life. Scientists have found a link between being kind to people and an increase in the chemical oxytocin.1.What does the study in Paragraph 2 show?
A.Diseases age people fast.
B.Doing good is good for one's health.
C.Women with more kids die earlier.
D.A long marriage leads to a long life.
2.Which is not true according to the passage?
A.Acts of kindness can improve health.
B.Acts of kindness can help a person reach goals.
C.Acts of kindness can add years to a person's life.
D.Acts of kindness can increase many harmful chemicals.
3.What can we infer(推断) about antibodies from Paragraph 4?
A.More antibodies may not be good. B.They help people reduce stress.
C.They increase with one's kind acts. D.The more antibodies, the more oxytocin.
4.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Helping others means helping yourself. B.Happiness is connected with kindness.
C.Try your best to help someone in need. D.Everyone needs to be cared for.

19、Hi,TigerMom,
What puzzles you is actually a puzzle for many parents in China. My idea is that it is not quite
right for you to do so.
Although high grades are an important factor in evaluating students and for their future university
admission, development in wisdom, emotion, health, and life attitude should never be ignored. There are
many examples around us. Some all-A students in school have turned out not to be as successful in
society as they were expected. The reason is often that the pressure from their parents allows them almost no time for other activities. Furthermore, punishment is by no means a wise choice to help them grow up
mentally and physically.
So I suggest that you take your friends' advice. More importantly, let her live like a lovely girl;let her
have more friends and social activities;and let her make mistakes of her own as the teenagers often do.。
