(1993);Kuhlthau(1991)and Vakkari(2003)are limited to information processes related to single information tasks.Models and studies of information-seeking and library use are limited to single information task use of libraries(Given and Leckie,2003). In addition,recent digital libraries use models at the social and organizational level are also based on single information task approach(Covi and Kling,1996).Recent empirical studies show that IR system users often engage in multitasking behaviors(Miwa,2001;Ozmutlu et al.,2003a,b;Spink et al.,2002b,2004).Users’often search on more than one information task during a single search or multiple search ers’may engage in many related multitasking search episodes over time.Multitasking behaviors include searching for information related to one information task and then switching to search for items on another information ers often think and work concurrently on multiple information tasks,but must search for information on Web/IR technologies ers’have problems in coordinating,tracking and managing their multitasking searches(Spink,2004; Spink et al.,2002a).Users’coordination and management of different information Multitaskinginterplay549search tasks are little supported by current search technologies or theories.Studies show that terms per web query and queries per search are increasing only incrementally overtime (Spink et al.,2002b).However,many users are thinking and working concurrently on many complex information problems.People also engage in dual tasking behavior,such as people drive and talk concurrently (Just et al.,2001).Research shows the increasing complexity in users’behaviors related to searchingthat are reflected in successive searching and multitasking search (Spink et al.,2002a).Multitasking searches include more keywords,queries and query reformulation than single information task ers’reported problems in coordinating,tracking,and managing their multitasking searches.Spink et al.(n.d.)studied two-query and three or more query search sessions on the Alta Vista Web search engine.Findings included:81percent of two-query sessions included multiple information tasks,91.3percent of three or more query sessions included multiple information tasks,there are a broad variety of information tasks in multitasking search sessions,and multitasking sessions contained frequent information task changes.Multitasking information-seeking episodesSpink et al.(2002a)first identified information multitasking processes in four studies conducted within different information environments,including library use.They found that people often seek information in switches.Library users’also optimized their interaction time by engaging in multitasking searches rather than separate searches on discrete information tasks overtime.Multitasking information behaviors are often driven by the complex nature and frequency of users’information rmation behaviors are not limited to single discrete information tasks,but often range over multiple information tasks or browsing behavior on specific multiple information tasks.Further theoretical and empirical studies are needed to examine multitasking information behaviors,and the interplay between information and non-information related behaviors.The next section of the paper proposes a theoretical model of HIB,exploring the interplay between information and non-information tasks.Multitasking and task switching modelFigure 1extends Spink’s (2004)multitasking model to include the interplay between information and non-information related task switching.Drawing on the multitasking and HIB research literature,Figure 1suggests that multitasking,and information and non-information task switching may be affected by the many factors,including:.nature and complexity of content in relation to the information seeker’s domain knowledge;.amount and depth of information processing required for different information tasks;.information seeker’s level of interest,including their attention and focus,in the information task;.level of planning and priorities by the information seeker in relation to their information tasks;JDOC 61,4550.pros and cons or the effects on effectiveness,efficiency and productivity of information tasks switching;.serendipity by the information seeker that is prompted by visual information cues and the tension with the planning and priority goals,and task interplays;and .cognitive styles and individual differences associated with attention/focus,and task prioritizing that is further elaborated in the next section of the paper.Cognitive styles and individual differencesCognitive styles and individual differences factors that affect multitasking information behaviors and information task switching.Individual differences affect multitasking behaviors (Ishizaka et al.,2001).Cognitive styles are tendencies displayed by individuals consistently to adopt a particular type of information processing strategy.Individual differences research has attempted to identify the patterns of information-seeking behaviors overtime.Recent studies also underpin the relationship between cognitive styles and individual differences during multitasking information behavior research.Cognitive styles studies show that different individuals seek and process information using very different strategies,different strategies may be more or less effective consistent tendency to adopt one or other type of information processing strategy (Ford et al.,2001).Miyata and Norman (1986)stated that there are two styles of human information processing:task-driven processing and interrupt-driven processing.In a task-driven state,people become engrossed in the task to which they are paying conscious attention and they do not process other events.In an interrupt-driven state,people areusually sensitive to extraneous events,easily distracted by extraneous thoughts and external signals.Individual differences play a role in deciding whether a person is in a state of task or interrupt driven processing.Some people are more easily controlled by task-driven structures;others are more distractible by extraneous events or thoughts.Heinstrom (2003)studied individual differences in information behavior with a particular focus on how and why personality traits influence information strategies,based on Costa and McCrae’s five-factor model:neuroticism,extraversion,openness to experience,agreeableness,and rmation seeking could be related personality traits and illustrates how person dependent on the information-seeking process is,and how important it is to acknowledge that each individual has a unique way of seeking information (Heinstrom,2003).Cognitive styles play a role in creating knowledge with an influence on information behavior.Ford et al.’s (2002)study,investigating the relationship between cognitive styles and problem solving and its associated information-seeking,shows that field-independent researchers were more analytic and active than their field-dependent counterparts and holists engaged more in exploratory and serendipitous behavior,and were more idiosyncratic in their communication than serialists.Wang et al.(2000)examined how users search for factual information on the web with a focus on individual differences,provides that differences in cognitive styles affect search process;filed-dependent individuals are likely to greater difficult in the web environment and to get confused more easily than field-independent individuals.Palmquist and Kim’s (2000)study shows that there is a relationship of cognitive style and experience on web searching.Field-dependent novice searchers took longer and traversed more nodes in locating relevant information than field-independent novices.Kim and Allen (2002)found that task effects on users’search activities and outcomes,and interactions between cognitive and task variables on users’search activities.Previous studies suggest that cognitive styles and individual differences may affect the patterns in human’s multitasking information behavior and information task switching.Figure 1provides a conceptual model of multitasking information behavior and task switching,including individual differences and cognitive styles factors for further research and model development.Conclusion and further researchMultitasking is a relatively new and crucial area of HIB research.Theoretically and practically,HIB can be conceptualized as a multitasking process.Humans commonly face multiple and complex situations in organizing and seeking information that involves interplay of information and non-information tasks.Further research is needed to examine multitasking further.Studies are also needed to investigate how people coordinate their information and multitasking behaviors,the role of individual differences and cognitive styles influence multitasking information behaviors and information task switching.JDOC
