AStarting high school life can be extremely exciting and at the same time nerve-wracking. You may worry about all these things: what classes to take, what to wear on the first day of school and what will everyone think of you? But so far high school has been the best experience for me ever.On my first day of high school, I asked a senior where my class was, and he told me it was "on the fourth floor, next to the pool". I found out five minutes later that we didn't even have a fourth floor and had no pool either! Besides that event, I didn't have any trouble with the older kids.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load and the size of the school. I went from fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours so I had to learn time management pretty quickly! Our class size was around 550, so being exposed to so many new people was a big change. Getting involved in clubs, sports, music and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. I t’s always useful to have an upperclassman friend! The best suggestion I can give about the four years you spend in high school is to learn things for the sake of learning, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve crammed(突击式学习) on the night before and got an A, but now I don't remember anything. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Relating to academics, don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between "AP Chemistry”and “Racquet Sport”, the first will prove to be more useful!1. What does the underlined word "nerve-wracking" in Paragraph 1 mean?________A. Worrying B Boring. C. Astonishing D. Relaxing.2. According to the author, the best way to deal with the increased homework load is________A. to spend much more time on his homework B to know how to make the best use of timeC to finish his homework as soon as possible D. to try to do his homework more carefully3. Which of the following is TRUE about the author's advice on high school life?A Making as many upperclassmen friends as possibleB. Taking an active part in various after school activities.C. Trying to obtain useful knowledge instead of getting good grades.D. Choosing easy but useful courses instead of practical ones.4. In writing the text, the author intends to________.A. tell others his first-day experience at high school C describe what can be learnt at high schoolB. express his opinions on high school education D. share his life and thoughts at high schoolBRuffles(褶边)add a feminine touch to an outfit. How much will you pay for a dress, a cardigan and the cheaper shirt?______A. 129.00 dollarsB. 159. 45 dollarsC. 168. 95 dollarsD. 178, 50 dollarsCFootball, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more than valuable lessons from it than from school. When I joined the team freshman year, I didn't realize what I was getting into. Even though I had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was a hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track to get in physical and mental shape before the season.See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn't only about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we felt like we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature( 幼稚的) and only thought of myself, sometimes even giving up when I was tired or hurting. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed an operation on my arm and at least five months to recover. After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing football in thecollege has taught me so much more than just what my tasks are on a particular play or how to block.I have learned to think about others first, and realized how important working hard is. Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us unite as a group of hard-working young men, who will succeed in life.9. What is the text mainly about?________A. How the author dislikes the game of football.B. When the author began to play football.C. How the author has changed his attitude to football.D. What sport the author likes best.10. The author thinks football is________A. just a game B of a mental sport C hard to be out-of-date D. not worth his effort11. In the third paragraph, the phrase "getting in shape "probably means “________”A. becoming physically fitB. designing the playgroundC losing weight D. measuring the trackDLife on land probably began about 430 million years ago, though it has existed in the water for perhaps as much as 3, 000 million years. When we think of the first thing on land, we probably think of strange animals coming out of the oceans, but in fact no animals could have been living if plants had not been on land first. Plants had to be on land before animals arrived. They supplied the first land animals with the surrounding and food necessity, since they, the plants, are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy. The first plants to exist out of the water were probably certain kinds of algae(海藻)which were followed by other plants that grew close to the ground and needed water in which to reproduce. Once the move to land had been made, however, evolution(进化) took place quickly. By the end of 100 million years, plants had developed their roots (根), and some had got treelike forms since height was very important in gaining sunlight. About 300 million years ago, much of the world was covered with forests of huge trees. In most ways they were like modern trees. They had roots, leaves, wood, but mostly they had not developed seeds.12. The main idea of the first paragraph is_______.A life on land probably began 430 years ago B. the first animals on land came from oceansC. there wouldn't be animals without plantsD. plants are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?_______A. Algae has existed for more than 430 million years.B. It is impossible that algae might be earliest plant on land.C Plants get food from animals in the oceansD. Evolution began after animals appeared on land14. According to the passage, ______appeared earlier than_______.A apples; orangesB oranges: applesC oranges; rosesD algae; wheat15. In which part of the magazine can you most probably find this passage?A technologyB scienceC healthD travel第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied: “Things aren’t always what they seem.”The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable(好客的)farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had,the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen?”“Why did you not watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,” she accused(谴责). “The second family had little but was willing to sh are everything, and you did not help.”“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement,I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune,I asked God if I could seal(封口) the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed,the angel of death came for his wife. I asked God if the angel could take the cow instead. Because she wanted to save the farmer’s wife.D. Because she was sympathetic to the rich.7. The story tries to tell the reader that___A. angels are always ready to help the poorB. sometimes things are not what they seemC. angels are always ready to help the richD. the young should always learn from the oldCTraveling without a map in different countries, I find out about different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have name signs; in Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to tr avelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance by time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You don’t understand completely, “Yes, but how many miles away is it, please?” To this question you won’t get an answer, because most probably they don’t k now it themselves.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People there believe that “I don’t” is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It’s body language.8. Which one of the followings is probably an example of Japanese directions?A. “Go south two miles. Turn west and then go another mile.”B. “Turn right at the hospital and go past a school. The library is right in front of you.”C. “The post office is about five minutes from here”D. “The post office is at Street Kamira.”9. Peo ple in Los Angeles don’t give directions in miles because _________.A. they use landmarks in their directions instead of distanceB. they prefer to lead you the wayC. they often have no idea of distance measured by milesD. they prefer to use body language10. Greeks give directions by __________.A.leading people the wayB. using landmarksing street namesD. giving people a wrong direction11. Where is Yucatan?A. In the USA.B. In Japan.C. In Greece.D. In Mexico.DWhen asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的).In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party. In adulthood the things that bring deep joy---love, marriage, birth---also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated. My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.I experience my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.Happiness isn’t about what happens to us --- it’s about how we see what happens to us. It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.12. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 5 and 6 ?A. She cares little about her own healthB. She enjoys the freedom of travellingC. She prefers getting pleasure from houseworkD. She is easily pleased by things in daily life13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 7?A. Psychologists think satisfying work is the key to happinessB. Psychologists’ opinion is well proved by Grandma’s caseC. Grandma’s happiness came from modest expectations of lifeD. Grandma often found time for social gatherings14. People who equal happiness with wealth and success ________.A. consider pressure something blocking their wayB. stress their right to happiness too muchC. are at a loss to make correct choicesD. are more likely to be happy15. What can be concluded from the passage?A. Happy is he who is contentB. Each man is the master of his own fateC. Success leads to happinessD. Happiness lies between the positive and the negative第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余的。

But then you head to the bathroom, and guess who comes with? Why, your dog, of course. But why? Why does your dog follow you like a shadow, no matter where you go?Ever get the feeling you're being followed? As for why your companion follows you everywhere you go, read on!"When dogs follow their owners, there can be several scientific explanations, depending on the dog and the individual situation," according to Mary Burch, Ph.D., an animal behaviorist. These explanations include:Positive reinforcement(正面强化):When your dog follows you, good things happen. Think dog food, a hot bath and taking a walk around the neighborhood. Your dog's no dummy. And one of his many talents is learning from experience, that is "reinforcement."Natural instinct(本能) to be part of a pack: In fact, a study out of Princeton University that was published in the journal, Science Advances, shows that your dog's drive (驱动力)to follow you around (as well as watch you attentively and seek physical contact from you) lies in his genes(基因).Feel good chemicals: Your presence causes your dog's brain to release "feel good" chemicals, Dr. Primm explains, citing this study. Considering how much we as humans enjoy those feel-good chemicals, it's no surprise your dog likes them too—and will follow you around to get some!Sense of responsibility : As you move about your home, your dog might feel that you are patrolling your territory (巡视领地) and take on the duty to assist you.4. Now, a staple grain native to Ethiopia, teff, is appearing on grocery shelves in America.Teff has been an important part of the Ethiopian diet for thousands of years. Like rice and wheat, it is a cereal grass. Teff is known for its fine grain and used mainly to make flour. Teff flour is the key ingredient in injera, the large, spongy pancakes that make up a large portion of the Ethiopian diet.Teff was introduced to the United States by a man named Wayne Carlson, who learned about teff while doing public health work in Africa in the mid-1970s. "I came to know teff because I was eating it all the time and hosted by teff farmers." he said. In the late 70s, Carlson returned to the U. S., married and settled in southwest Idaho. Then he came up with an idea to introduce teff grass to his home state. " Geologically, it is very similar to Ethiopia."Wayne and his wife Elisabeth are not farmers, nor do they want to be. So they convinced actual farmers in Idaho to grow teff on contract for them. The Carlsons milled it themselves.Wayne went through the Washington, D. C. telephone book and looked for the names that were Ethiopian. And that is how the business slowly grew. Over time, the Teff Company has outgrown four different mills.Rich Roseberg is a food researcher at Oregon State University. He says teff production has exploded over the past decade in the U. S. He says most teff grown in the U. S. is fed to farm animals. In Idaho, however, where the Carlsons are based, Roseberg believes more of the teff production is for human food. Idaho is located close to Ethiopia.B. Teff is easy to survive on its own.C. Idaho has geographic features similar to Ethiopia.D. Teff was originally introduced to Ethiopia from Idaho.10. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?A. Wayne's teff did not sell well at first.B. Wayne's teff was sold only to Ethiopians.C. Wayne sent teff to his Ethiopian friends.D. Wayne lost control of his Teff Company.11. What is Rich Roseberg's attitude to Wayne introducing teff into America?A. Worried.B. Disapproving.C. Favorable.D. Pessimistic.DUK physicist Isaac Newton once said, “Nature is pleased with simplicity and nature is no fool.” Indeed, Mother Nature can provide almost everything human beings need if we follow her rules. But if we break the rules, she is likely to be cruel. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia(新冠肺炎NCP)in China and some other countries at the beginning of this year is an example. According to Xinhua News Agen-cy, the new coronavirus is similar to a virus found in a bat in 2017 and probably has an intermediate host(中间宿主). It’s believed that the v irus originated from the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, Hubei province, where live wild animals were sold. The Wall Street Journal reported that Dr Peter Daszak, president of the US-based health organ ization Eco Health Alliance, said, “This outbreak is a lesson for us. On a global scale, human population density(密度), wildlife diversity, and land use change are what drive new pandemics(流行病).”In ancient times, people needed to rely on nature to survive so they held it in awe (敬畏). For example, the American Indians believed that humans are a part of nature and nature is a pail of humans. Chinese ancients always pursued(追求) the harmony between nature and human beings. However, as human beings master more knowledge and make more advanced tools, people try to change and even conquer nature. They use more land to make buildings, genetically modify plants, and catch some wild and rare animals to suit their own needs. In this process, humans gradually lose contact with nature and even throw it out of balance. For example, cutting a large number of forests means carbon dioxide must build up in the atmosphere and it contributes to global warming.Although we don't know for sure what first caused the NCP outbreak, Brian Lamacraft at Medium said it's time for people to'' reflect on our relationship with our plant" reconnect with this world and everything that we've been given". After all, according to US poet Gary Snyder, "Nature is not the place to visit. It's our home."12. Why does the author give the example of the NCP in Paragraph 2?A. Because it results from humans going against nature.B. Because it has caused widespread suffering.C. Because it broke out at the beginning of this year.D. Because it is similar to another pandemic.13. What lesson did Daszak think human beings should learn from the NCP outbreak?A. Bats are one of the most dangerous wild animals.B. It's impossible to prevent new pandemics globally.C. We should stop the wildlife trade around the world.D. Humans should live peacefully with nature.14. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?A. How human beings become their own masters.B. How human activities cause global warming.C. How human beings break the balance of nature.D. How humans use technology to improve their lives.15. What is the author's purpose in writing this article?A. To reflect on the NCP outbreak.B. To explain what led to the NCP outbreak.C. To describe experts, predictions on new pandemics.D. To compare ancient and modem attitudes toward nature.

A story posted by The New York Post Monday tells the tale of Katrina Holte, a Hillsboro woman who quit her job to cosplay a 1950s housewife.Let me start by expressing admiration to Holte for using her 2019 freedoms to follow her 1950s dreams. Everyone should be so lucky as to get to decide what they wear and how they spend their time. That's the future our foremothers fought for.But as much fun as I am sure she is having living a vintage (复古的) life, which literally includes watching shows like "I Love Lucy" and listening to vinyl recordings (刻录碟片), I think it's important to remember that being a 1950s housewife was actually totally awful, and something our grandmothers and mothers fought against. For example, once I called my grandma and asked her for her recipe for Cloud Biscuits, these delicious biscuits she used to make that we would cover with butter and homemade raspberry jam on Thanksgiving."Why would you want that?" she said. "Go to the store. Go to the freezer section. Buy some pre-made biscuits and put them in the oven."She straight-up refused to give me the recipe, because it was hard and took a long time to make. In her mind, it was a waste of time.Getting off the phone, it occurred to me that spending every day of your life serving a husband and five children wasn't fun at all. And then there are the grandchildren who eventually come along demanding Cloud Biscuits, a whole new expanded set of people to feed. She was basically a slave to those hungry mouths, cooking scratch meals three times a day. When she wasn't trapped in the kitchen, she had to keep the house clean, make sure she looked good enough to be socially acceptable, and make sure her kids and husband looked good enough to be socially acceptable. And she had no days off.I know my grandma loves her kids and her grandkids, her husband and the life she led, but man, it must have been a lot of thankless, mindless labor. No wonder everyone went all-in on processed foods when they came around. Imagine the nice break something like a microwave dinner would give a woman working, unpaid, for her family every single day?I also had another grandma. She was a scholar who helped found the Center for the Study of Women in Society at University of Oregon. She was a pioneering second-wave feminist who wrote books, gave lectures and traveled the world. But, she did all of that after divorcing my grandpa, when most of her kids were out of the house. Back then, in the 1950s and the 1960s, there was no illusion about women "having it all". How could that even possibly happen? If you were taking care of a family, waiting on your husband, you had no time to follow your dreams, unless you made that your dream.A lot of women took that approach. We call it Stockholm Syndrome now.And of course, these women I am talking about are upper-middle-class white women. Romanticizing the 1950s is especially disgusting when you think about how women of color andpoor women were treated back then, and the lack of education and choices available to them.Because the women in this country demanded something approaching equality, Holte has the chance to live out her fantasy. Not every woman in America is so lucky. We still don't have pay equality and in many states, we still don't have autonomy over our own bodies. Poor women and women of color still lack the opportunities of their wealthy and white peers. And while it's getting better, women are still expected to be responsible for the emotional labor of running a household and raising the children. But at least we can get jobs. At least we don't have to sew our own clothes, wear a full face of makeup every day and spend hours making Cloud Biscuits some ungrateful kid will wolf down, barely remembering to say thank you.(1)According to the author, what is the future our foremothers fought for?A. Watching shows like "I Love Lucy" and listening to vinyl recordings.B. Having the freedom to make choices in their daily life.C. Making Cloud Biscuits for their kids and husbands.D. Making sure their kids and husbands socially acceptable.(2)What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 13 refer to?A. Writing books, giving lectures and traveling the world.B. Divorcing husband when kids were out of house.C. Taking care of a family and waiting on husband.D. Women's illusion about "having it all".(3)What does the "Stockholm Syndrome" in paragraph 14 really mean in the passage?A. Women have been used to the unfair treatment at homeB. Women nowadays like the way of life in the 1950s.C. Victims end up sympathizing with the abusers.D. Women have the chance to live out their dreams.(4)The author thinks of the life of a 1950s housewife as ________.A. fantasticB. admirableC. awfulD. unforgettable(5)What can we learn from the passage?A. It was a waste of time to give grandchildren the recipe.B. All women are not lucky to follow their own dreams in America now.C. Housewives received recognition for their efforts from family members.D. The upper-middle-class white women did a better job in running the household.(6)What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage?A. To show great appreciation to her grandmas.B. To call on housewives to claim the pay for the housework they undertake.C. To draw readers' attention to the situations women face, especially those poor and of color.D. To arouse women's awareness of equal pay at work.【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)A(4)C(5)B(6)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,作者认为在日常生活中拥有选择的自由是我们的祖先为之奋斗的未来,同时想让读者注意到女性所面临的处境,尤其是那些贫穷的有色人种。

By boat.BMid-afternoon on a particularly busy Tuesday, I took leave of my desk at work and walked into a local Starbucks only to find a space where neither my clients nor my children would ask me to do something.Inside, I ran into Kate, a co-worker of mine. The topic of parenthood came up. I complained about how packed my schedule was. From the minute I woke up to the minute I fell asleep, I was constantly in demand and always had someone knocking at the door. But a bit of sadness seemed to come over Kate’s face.“Well, my daughter’s in San Francisco and she doesn’t seem to need me at all these days,” Kate said. It was in that moment that I realized although I might often feel in high demand, there will come a day when I will actually miss that same stress I then complained about. And as our conversation continued, it turned to our children’s younger years, with Kate smiling proudly, thinking of the little boy and girl she raised who are now a man and a woman. But I noticed her smile was marked with regret. She explained that she often wondered about what she could have done differently when her children were in their earlier years. This got me thinking. Is regret an unfortunate footnote (注脚) to parenthood? With that in mind, I asked six older parents one question: What is your biggest regret from your early days as aparent? It turned out that all of them thought they could have done it better. But, each of them also has a strong, healthy relationship with their kids. Whatever regrets their parents might have had about their upbringing, one thing is clear ------- it didn’t affect them in a meaningful way.The bottom line is, we all feel like we could be doing this parenting thing better. And quite clearly, years later, we’re still going to look back and wish we tried things differently. But the past can’t be changed, and neither should it.4. What can be inferred from the first three paragraphs?A. Kate had the same problem as the author's.B. The two people had arranged to meet in the coffee shop.C. The author went to the coffee shop to escape from the pressure around him.D. Kate went to the coffee shop so no one could find her there.5. Why did Kate feel sad and regretful?A. She was disappointed with her kid’s performance.6. What did the author find when the author spoke to six older parents?A. Some of the parents have a bad relationship with their kids.B. He was moved by the love of these parents for their children.C. These parents improved their behavior after their kids grew up.D. None of the parents were completely satisfied with the way they raised their kids.7. What is the text mainly about?A. Give more love to your kids.B. Regret for the parenting can be softened by time.C. Nearly all the parents have regretful parenting.D. Never stop learning how to be a good parent from others.CFor decades, research has shown that children's book not only provide great pleasure to readers ,but they can also play an important role in children’s academic(学业上的)and socialsuccess. In 1974,researchers reported that sixth﹣grade children who had been read to form an early age developed into better readers and valued reading more than did sixth graders who had not been to ,and they expected to continue reading throughout their lives.Others have determined that the more time children spend reading literature(文学作品),the better their reading and writing abilities become.Significant increases have been found in young children's comprehension and vocabulary skills, their understanding of sentence structure and story structure as a result of their being read to form an early age ,either at home or in school.Children who have access to literature and stories in their homes have been found to learn to read more quickly, and have better attitudes toward reading.Teachers who provide time for continuous silent reading ,who share books and discuss book authors with children during the school day ,positively those children's reading outside school. And the National Assessment of Educational Progress that children who frequently read for enjoyment out of school are better readers.Because children's literature is so valuable to children,it should also be valuable to their teacher. And so it's unfortunate that something that can play such an important role in children's lives is often moved into a less than important role teacher education. This article discusses three important issues about the position of children's literature in teacher﹣preparation programs. They are:(1)Respect for children's literature content in teacher education.(2)The value of children's literature as a powerful educational tool.(3)Children's literature as an important literary form.8. The author mentions the research results in 1974 to show______.A.the development of reading ability in sixth gradersB.the ways of teaching children to become better readersC.the importance of early reading in children's academic growthD.the difference in reading skills between sixth graders and pre﹣school children9. According to the author , better readers are those who______.A.find pleasure reading in any kind of booksB.perform better in reading tests in schoolC.get into at finding out structure of stories they readD.get into the habit of reading books for fun outside school10. What is the main subject of the text?_______A.Value of children's books to the development of their reading and writing ability.B.Educating children at an early age is quite necessaryC.Parents play an important role in children's academic growthD.Children's books are worth reading by teachers11. The paragraph following the text most probably discusses______.A.the publication of children's booksB.the types of children's literatureC.the use of children's literature in teacher education programsD.the role of children's books in children's academic developmentDTraveling abroad for leisure is becoming more and more popular for Chinese. The UK is high up in the list of places that the Chinese want to visit. There is a sense of mystery about the UK: it’s often the images of England’s gre en parks, countryside and Victorian houses that people point to as an alternative to polluted, overcrowded cities such as Beijing and Guangzhou. The capital is viewed as modern and dynamic, while being filled deep with history. When asked what other ima ges are thought of by the UK, the reply is often “the Queen, tea and Oxbridge”. So what’s stopping them actually coming? Sebastian Wood, the British ambassador in Beijing, has described the UK as a “fortress”, and while this is perhaps an exaggeration (夸张), Britain does have a reputation as a country that is harder to access. The main problem for Chinese tourists is obvious. Although visa applications are now completed online, visitors are still required to visit one of 12 UK centers across the country for a face-to-face interview and fingerprinting. If you don’t live near one of these centers already, you’d have to travel some distance to get there.Another problem is also to be mentioned. If travelers from China visit the UK, they also want to cover as much ground as possible. But the UK is not included in the Schengen visa, which allows access to a host of 26 European countries such as France and Germany. So it makes the former seem less worth it.There is also the issue of cost:£47 for a Schengen visa, £82 for the UK. On top of this, the UK is viewed as stricter in its handling of visas compared with the rest of Europe, fed by urbanlegends of rejected applications. In the end, the decision comes down to one question: Is Britain worth a visit?12. The underlined word “fortress” in Paragraph 2 is something similar to ______.A.Castle B.apartment C. temple D. market13. Which of the following statements is NOT true for the UK visa?A.One must have a face-to -face interview.B.One can apply for a visa online.C.No one needs to travel a long distance to get to a center.D.No one can get a visa without a fingerprinting.14. What can a visitor do if the he gets a Schengen visa?A.He can only visit the UK.B.He can visit the UK and FranceC.He can only visit 26 European countries.D.He can travel to any country he likes.15. What is the author’s attitude towards visiting the UK?A.He really supports Chinese people to visit the UK.B.He suggests Chinese people visit London strongly.C.He believes everyone should go to see the Queen and OxbridgeD.He thinks it is troublesome to visit the UK.第二节(共5 小题;每小题2 分,共10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出正确的五个选项并填入空白处。

But he decided he would rather work with growing minds than with growing trees.Seven years ago, Michael Geisen got master's degree in teaching and a job at a middle school. He brought new energy to the science department there. He created school projects, and got parents' support in their children's work. He always tried to be creative with each activity, and he didn't like using textbooks much. One girl in his class said he could probably make it interesting to watch grass grow. During lunch, his students come to his room to talk, get help, visit his turtle and sometimes join him in playing the guitar. He writes songs and develops games about science. He says one of his goals as a teacher is to create people who will continue to learn throughout their lives. The National Teacher of the Year is a professional award in the United States. Our goals are important for us to create what enriches our life. A very common attitude among people who are successful is that their success lies in their ability to provide themselves goals that are both numerous and exciting. When you think about your future, you are helping to feed a long-term goal of what you want to create. To realize your dreams, you must translate your vision into a series of actions you can take as soon as possible. You should be able to measure these results,to make sure they take you wherever you want. And this step should not be viewed lightly! Indeed, very few people set goals and concrete actions for themselves to achieve. Very few people note what they want to accomplish, and know each day whether they have indeed advanced in the direction of their dreams. Therefore one of the secrets that you can get results from is to write down your goals on paper first. When you give your dreams a form, they become more concrete, and you can refer to them often and easily. Whenever you read the dreams that you note down, you fill your mind with positive and motivational thoughts. Unfortunately, many people stop there. They just simply make wishes, hope and wait. These people do not bring positive difference in their lives, because that sort of behavior is just wishful thinking. Success is not at all a miracle. It depends on clear and realistic targets through serious thoughts:concrete actions and perseverance(毅力). Don’t forget, your past does not determine your future. Only you now is your potential! 【1】People can achieve success commonly in that they .A.have many dreamsB.are well-informed of how goals goC.think a lot about their bright futureD.know what the goals are in their life【2】If you put down your goals on the paper, you can .A.know clearly what should be doneB.make them accomplished smoothlyC.measure the results of the goals easilyD.mention them easily to others【3】The last paragraph mainly tells that .A.having dreams is very important to everyoneB.to translate goals into concrete actions is important for successC.what people did in the past affects what the are todayD.most people can make a difference in their life【4】What is the best title for the passage?A. The Path towards Your TargetsB.The Process of Making GoalsC.The Power of Your GoalsD.The Importance of Your Success二、其他Do you know what a big dream is? 【1】 Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow. The SelfImmediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to.【2】Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true.【3】Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friend destroy dreams of those t hey love most, out of their own fear of being left behind. The WorldIf one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world.【4】 In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at.The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well.【5】A.Does a big dream show one’s future ?B.They simply fail until they succeed.C.How Big Dreams DieD.It is the last and the most terrible barrier.E. Thefamily was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,”she accused(谴责). “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help.”“Things aren’t always what they seem,”the older angel replied. The story tries to tell the reader that___A. angels are always ready to help the poorB. sometimes things are not what they seemC. angels are always ready to help the richD. the young should always learn from the oldCTraveling without a map in different countries, I find out about different “styles” of direction s every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have name signs; in Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance byti me, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You don’t understand completely, “Yes, but how many miles away is it, please?” To this question you won’t get an answer, because most probably they don’t know it themselves.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation?A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People there believe that “I don’t” is i mpolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It’s body language.8. The more we can enjoy what we hav e, the happier we are. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfyingwork. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who hav e those things aren’t necessarily happier.Happiness isn’t about what happens to us --- it’s about how we see what happens to us. It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.12.
