Talk about the equipment in engine room. There are all kinds of equipment in a typical engine room, such as themain engine, the auxiliary engine, the boiler, the oil separator, the fresh water generator, the incinerator, the oily water separator, all kinds of pumps and so on.The main engine is the most important one of all the equipment. It is usually a two-stroke low speed diesel engine. The auxiliary engines are usedto drive the alternators. They are usually four-stroke trunk piston engines. The steam on board is produced by the boiler. There are two distinct types about marine boilers in use, the fire-tube boiler and the water-tube boiler. The fresh water generator produces fresh water by evaporation of sea water. It can also be called an 'evaporator' or3'distiller'. A vacuum boiling evaporator consists of an evaporatingsection and a condensing section. The incinerator and the oily water separator are pollution prevention equipment in the engine room.2. The main engine in our engine room. The main engine is the most important one of the equipment in our department. It is a two-stroke low speed marine diesel engine. The main engine is used to drive the propeller. Because of low speed, it requires no reduction gearbox between it and propeller. In general, the main engine consists of two parts: the moving parts andthe fixed parts. The moving parts are also called the driving gear. These include the crankshafts, the connecting rods, the crossheads and the pistons. Among the fixed parts there are the bed plates, the frames, the main bearing and the cylinders. In addition to these main parts, the necessary system that should be used to run the main engine is fuel oil system, starting air system and cooling water system. We take good care of the main engine to ensure its good working condition. Everyday during the watch we note and verify the parameters of the main engine. And verify the parameters of the main engine. And at appropriate intervals we inspect it carefully.3. Look at the illustration and say something about the marine diesel engine. This marine diesel engine is two-stroke diesel engine. The scavenging method is uniflow scavenging. It is pressure charged.A marine diesel engine can be divided into two parts, the moving parts and the fixed parts. The main moving parts of the marine diesel engine are the piston, the connecting rod, the crankshaft and the piston rod. The main fixed parts of the marine diesel engine are the bedplate, the frame, the main bearing and the cylinder. In additional to these main parts, the necessary systems that should be used to run the diesel engine are fuel oil system, lubricating oil system, starting air system and cooling water system. These systems are very important to the marine diesel engine. Its successful operation and trouble free life depend on these systems. The diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine. The marine diesel engine is a type of diesel engine used on ships. The operation between two injections is called a cycle. This cycle may be achieved either in four strokes or two. In a four-stroke diesel engine, the cycle requires four separate strokes of the piston. They are suction, compression, expansion and exhaust. If we combine the suction and exhaust operations with the compression and expansion strokes, the four-strokes, the four-stroke engine will be turned into a two-stroke one. When the air is compressed, its temperature rises so that it ignites the fine spray of fuel injected into the cylinder. The burning of the fuel adds more heat to the air charge, causing it to expand and force the engine piston to do work on the crankshaft. Then the crankshaft in turn drives the ship's propeller.4. Look at the illustration and say something about the working cycle of the marine diesel engine. This is the exhaust turbo-charging illustration of a two-stroke of marine diesel engine.. As the air4density determines the maximum weight of fuel that can be burned. It also determines the maximum power that can be developed by the engine. If the charge-air density is increased by a compressor, a greater amount of fuel can be burned and result in an increase of power output. From the illustration, we can see that: The compressor is driven by the heat energy obtained from the engine exhaust gases. The gas-turbine is driven by the engine exhaust gases and directly coupled to the compressor (blower). The blower then draws fresh air from the engine-room and discharges it into the air inlet manifold on the engine. The air is pumped into the cylinder through the inlet ports. When air is burned, it becomes exhaust gases and discharge from the discharge valve which is on the top of combustion space. The exhaust gases then drive the compressor as describe above. The charge-air cooler is fit after the passage of compressor. Here,charge-air is cooled by cooling water and its density increases. Because the amount of air flowing into the cylinders is increased and as the charge-air temperature lowers, it is not only power output is increased, but also the exhaust temperature and the engine thermal load are reduced.5. Look at the illustration and say something about the exhaust gas turbocharger and supercharging. With supercharging a large mass of air is supplied to the cylinder by blowing it in under pressure. The exhaust gas turbocharger is the most commonly used on board to increase the density of the charge air.The exhaust gas turbocharger is composed of five parts: the air manifold, the exhaust manifold, the turbine, the compressor and the charge air cooler. The principle is as following: the exhaust air from the exhaust manifold enters the turbine room. Inertia of exhaust air drives the turbine. Theturbine is rigidly coupled to a centrifugal type air compressor. Then by the use of the compressor, the increase in charge air density is accomplished. Both four-stroke and two-stroke cycle engines may be pressure charged. The supercharging does a great favor to the thorough burning of the fuel. Then the output power is increased. The exhaust gas turbocharger is very important. We must pay attention toit and ensure its good working condition.6. Look at the illustration and say something about the cooling water system. The cooling water system is made up of jacket cooling water system and piston cooling water system. The coolant used in the cooling water system is fresh water. Cooling enables the engine metals to retain their mechanical properties. The main devices in the cooling system are expansion tank, jacket cooler, LO cooler, piston cooler, piston cooling water pump and so on. After leaving the engine, the jacket cooling water passes partially to the cooler and then into the jacket cooling water pumps, it is then pumped around the jacket. The expansion tank can ensure the jacket against cavitations effects. It can make up water due to leakages in the system. It can also ensure that the sea water can’t enter the fresh water system in the event of a small leakage in the jacket cooler. The cooling water system is very important. We must ensure it’s in good order and maintenance.5感谢您的阅读,祝您生活愉快。

Third, I will show him how to operate the various equipment and devices safely, and introduce as much safety knowledge as I can.3. Xiao Zhang is a three-year student majoring in marineengineering from Shanghai Marine University. How do youintroduce the equipment and machinery in the engine room to him.Same answer as question No 2.4. Look at the illustration and say something about the disposal of the shafting and diesel engine. The power of the diesel engine is transmitted to the propeller through the transmission system. The items of transmission system include various shafts, such as the thrust shaft, one or more intermediate shafts and tail shaft. These shafts are supported by the thrust block, intermediate bearings and the stern tube bearing. The propeller consist of a boss with several blades. The thrust is transmitted along the shafting to the thrust block and finally to ship structure.5. Look at the illustration and say something about the probability of disposal of medium-speed and high-speed diesel engine. When the ship is sailing at full speed, it needs four engines running. When the ship is sailing at half speed, it requires two engines running. While the ship is operating at about 30 % of full speed, one engine is enough to meet its power requirement. That is, the ship can be operated with single engine, double engines, or four engines according the load condition. Generally, when the ship is sailing at sea speed, it has four engine running, while it approaches the wharf, it has two.6. Look at the illustration and say something about structure of the main engine. The structure of the main engine is as follows: the construction mainly includes bedplate, frame, cylinders, pistons, connecting rod, main bearing and crankshaft. The crankshaft rests in main bearings built into cross girders of the bedplate. On the top of A frames there is a scavenging air box. The bedplate, frames and cylinder blocks are secured together by long tie-rods. A piston consists of a lower part called piston skirt and an upper part called piston crown.7. Look at the illustration and say something about stress status of the moving parts. The moving parts shown in the illustration mainly include the piston, the connecting rod, and the crankshaft. These are all critical parts of the engine. According to the specific condition shown in the picture, the piston is under compression force, the connecting rod is under tension stress and compression force, while the crankshaft is under the torsion forces.8. Look at the illustration and say the type of piston head shape in diesel engine. Pistons can be divided into two main classes: the crosshead type pistons and the trunk type pistons. The top surface of the crosshead piston can be flat, sunken or convex. The piston shown in the illustration is the crosshead type piston with a sunken surface. It has the advantage of increasing the air turbulence and improvingthe oil and air mixing quality. Its disadvantage is that the cylinder volumetric clearance will be larger.9. Look at the illustration and say the types of piston ring. The piston rings shown in the illustration has the shape of rectangle or trapezoid. Some of them are rounded on the external top or bottom edges. Among these piston rings, No.1 and No.2 are sealing rings, No. 3 and No. 4 are scraper rings, while the No.5 is a distributor ring. Generally, each piston is provided with five or six piston rings.10. Please describe the lubricating mode of main engine.Large marine diesel engines of crosshead construction generally have two systems of lubrication: a totally loss system feeding the cylinders and a circulating system lubricating the running gear and cooling the pistons. Oil is supplied to the cylinder liner wall and piston rings by means of mechanical lubricators. The lube oil to the various moving parts enables the formation of an oil film which reduces friction and wear.11. Talk about the working principle of purifier according to the picture given. The removal of impurities and water from fuel oil and lube oil is very important for the good working conditions of the engine. This is achieved by the centrifugal purifier. In consists of an electric motordrive to a vertical shaft on the top of which is mounted the bowl assembly. The high-speed rotation is a purifier which can produce acentrifugal force many thousand times larger than the force of gravity. After the bowl fulfilled with clean water, the dirty oil is admitted into the center of the bowl, passes up through a stack discs and out through the top.During this process, the action of centrifugal force causes the clean oil to flow inwards and the water and impurities flow outwards. The water and impurities form a sludge, which moves outwards along the undersides of the discs to the periphery of the bowl. The excessive water will flow out through the water outlet and the sludge can be discharged at regular intervals. Thus, the whole process could continuously go on.12. Talk about the working principle of oily water separator according to thepicture given.Oily water separators are used to ensure that ships do not discharge oil when pumping out the bilge water, or oily water from oil tanks or any water contaminated space. The main principle of separation is the gravitational difference between oil and water.1) The separator is first filled with clean water.2) The oily water mixture is then pumped into the coarse separating space. Here some oil will separate and rise into the oil collection space.3) The remaining mixture now flows down into the fine separating space. More oil will separate out. The almost oil-free water passes into the central pipe and leaves the separator unit.13. Talk about the anti-pollution equipment on board ship. The anti-pollution equipment on board ship includes oily water separator, incinerator and sewage treatment plant. Oily water separators are used to ensure that ships do not discharge oil when pumping out bilge water or oily water from oil tanker or any oil contaminated space. They should be used in conjunction with some forms of filters if greater purity is required. The incinerators are used to burn the solid waste. And some biological sewage treatment plants are in use to treat the sewage water the whole ship produced. All these equipment must be kept in good order; otherwise we would not pass the PSC inspection.14. Talk about the operation of the ballast system. The ballast system is arranged to ensure that water can be drawn from any tank or the sea and discharged to any other tank or the sea as required to trim the vessel. Combine or separate mains for suction and discharge may be provided. Where a tank or cargo space can be used for ballast or dry cargo then either a ballast or bilge connection will be required. The system must therefore be arranged so that only the appropriate pipeline is in service; the other must be securely blanked or closed off. The automatic filling of any tank may be obtained by opening the valve of sea water main connected to the discharge main. For operating the ballast system, care must takenwhen we open or close the relative valves. Usually the ballast pump is centrifugal pump, so it must be operated according to the requirement.15. Talk about the operation of the bilge water system. The operation of the bilge system is an important routine work. It needs great care. When the operation of the bilge system is needed, the following procedure must be observed:1) Discharge the bilge tanks one by one.2) Open and close the relevant valves when changing over to another tankaccording to the operation procedure.3) Stop pumping out when the bilge tank is nearly empty.4) Pay attention to the filters and mud-boxes to ensure no clogging5) The discharge must meet the relative legislative requirements.6) The operation must be recorded and reported to C/E.The duty engineer should discharge the bilges before handing over a watch. Fire-tube boilers are used for auxiliary purposes to provide smaller quantities of low pressure steam on diesel engine powered ships.3. Talk about oil treatment. Both fuel oil and lubricating oil require treatment before passing to the engine. This will involve storage and heating to allow separation of water present, coarse and fine filtering to remove solid particles and also centrifuging.Lesson 5Task33. Say something about the function and management of ballast water. The ballast water is used to ballast or trim the vessel. The ballast system is arranged to draw water from any tank or the sea and discharge it to any other tank or the sea. When transferring ballast water from one tank to another, we must pay much attention. Open the related valves correctly. Close other valves start the pump. Otherwise we could not pump the water. we must ask for the permission from the port authorities before discharg e ballast water or we’ll be fined.Lesson 6Task31. Say something about the maintenance work of electrical equipment. Cleanliness is essential for good operation of the electrical equipment. Electrical connections must be sound and any signs of sparking should be investigated. Parts subject to wear must be examined and replaced when necessary. Care must therefore be taken to ensure isolation of equipment before any inspection or maintenance is undertaken. Regular insulation resistance measurement and the compiling of records must be taken to protect the electrical equipment.2. Talk about the importance of water on board. The water is used widely on board. Without water, The seaman can’t live and the engine also can’t operation contiuously. The fresh water is used for drinking water、toilet、boiler water. The sea water used for coolant、sanitary、extinguisher、ballasting and so on.Lesson 7Task31. Talk about the telegraph in the engine room. The telegraph is on the control room console. It is used to control and indicate the Main Engine condition. On the telegraph, two directions are shown, that is, ahead and astern, and between them is the stop position. Every time before sailing, this telegraph must be checked. It should have no difference with the bridge telegraph.2. Talk about the engine room orders.Any engine order given should be repeated by the person operating the bridge telegraph and the engineer on watch should ensure the order is carried out correctly and immediately. The engine orders include:Stand by engine; Finish with engine; Stop engine;Full ahead; half ahead; slow ahead; dead slow ahead;Full astern; Half astern; Slow astern; Dead slow astern;Emergency full ahead; Emergency full astern.Where bow thrusters are used, the following orders are used:Bow thruster full / half to port side; Bow thruster full / half to starboard side; Stem thruster full / half to port side; Stem thruster full / half to starboard side;Bow / stem thruster stop.3. Say something about stand-by engine before departure. After this order is given from bridge, the following work should be done one by one:Check main engine telegraph and ship’s clockTest the steering gear operationStart another generator and put in useStart all necessary pumpsPut on turning gear and let it run about half hourDrain water from air receiver4. Say something about stand-by engine after sailing. When our ship stand-by engine after sailing, our ship is arriving at the port. There are something must be done in advance: the Chief engineer must be in the engine control room. The duty engineer must prepare to change over heavy fuel oil to diesel oil. The starting air reservoir must be pumped up to their maximum pressure. The oily water separator and fresh water generator are to be stopped. Start another generator engine for sufficient power supply. The remote control mode must be changed to manual mode and so on.Lesson 8Task31. Talk about the fire fighting equipment board. There is a lot of fire fighting equipment on board, including: fire pump, emergency fire pump, fire main pipe, fire hose, hydrant valve, portable extinguisher and fixed installation. There are many types of portable extinguishers used on board ship. The chemical foam extinguishers can be used to deal with the oil fires and it is usually found in machinery spaces and other locations, where an oil fire may occur. Carbon dioxide extinguishers and dry powder extinguishers are very useful on chemical fires. It is important to keep the fire fighting equipment in good order and ready for use.2. Talk about actions to be taken when a fire occurs in the engine room.If a fire occurs in the engine room, the following actions should be taken at once: (1) Report to the bridge or push the alarm button; (2) Close the ventilation doors; (3) Shut off the electric power; (4) Ensure the fire source; (5) Put out the fire by portable extinguisher, (6) Check the number of the engine crew; (7) Release carbon dioxide. 3. Talk about actions to be taken in event of collision. In event of collision, the following actions should be taken at once: (1) Stand by the engine; (2) Cut off electric power, oil, water and air near the accident place; (3) Carry out Captain’s order.4. Talk about actions to be taken when a blackout occurs in the engine. If a black out occurs the following actions should be taken at once: (1) Inform the bridge and chief engineer; (2) Start up the standby generator; (3) Supply the power; (4) Restore the switch of automatic trip.Lesson 9Task31. Talk about the Muster List. The muster list is an important document on board. It tells the crew members their position and duties in emergency situations, such as fire, collision, oil spill, abandoning ship, ship grounding and so on. For example, in case of flooding, thechief engineer should go to the engine room and be in general command. The second engineer should maneuver the main engine. Some other members should go to stop the flooding and so on.2. Actions to be taken in the event of flooding.1) Acting in full compliance with the Muster list.2) Actions to be taken in terms of notifying, locating, restricting, and handling. In the event of flooding, the following actions should be taken at once:(1) Report to the duty officer, the chief engineer, the captain at once; (2) Turn on the alarm; (3) All the crew members should act in full compliance with the Muster List; (4) Slow down the M/E; (5) close watertight doors; (6) open the emergency valve; (7) start seawater pump; (8) discharge some water overboard.3. Talk about the actions to be taken in the event of a man falling overboard.1) Shouting and notifying.2) Take measures to rescue the person falling overboard. In the event of a man falling overboard, the person who sees the accident must shout for help, inform the bridge, throw a lifebuoy into the water and keep the man in his visual scope. The bridge should sound the alarm, and take measures to save the man, for example, slowing down, changing the direction, and lowering the lifeboat to pick up the man falling overboard.4. Talk about an abandon ship drill. An abandon ship drill is carrying out a least one month or when more than 25 percent of the ship’s personal have been changed. In An abandon ship drill the following actions should be taken :(1) Start up the emergency generator; (2) shut down the boiler; (3) cut off fuel supply; (4) close the ventilators, doors and so on; (5) close watertight doors; (6) launch lifeboat.Lesson 11Task31. Say something about PSC inspection (the purpose, the items to be checked, the conventions the inspection based on).PSC stands for port state control. Its purpose is to ensure safety at sea, prevent fire and pollution. During PSC inspection there is a lot of equipment in engine room to be inspected such as: emergency equipment, life saving equipment, fire fighting equipment and so on. If deficiencies are found in the inspection. We should take measures to deal with them and make correction.2. Talk about a fire drill (persons involved, equipment to be used, purpose). We often have fire drill. We usually have the drill once a month. Each member is in charge of one duty. There is a lot of equipment to be used in the drill such as: fire pump, hydrants, hoses, fire extinguishers and so on. The crew designated on the muster list, should take part in the drill. By drill we can face emergency situation calmly and bravely. Also it can develop our ability.3. Talk about your responsibilities as a motormanAs a motorman I shall be on duty in the engine control room from 8 a. m. to 4 p.m. in the UMS (Unattended Machinery Space). During the watch, I shall check the working conditions of all the equipment in the engine room, levels of all tanks and engine room bilge wells. I shall keep the engine room clean and tidy. I will also undertake engine maintenance and repair work.4. Talk about the triangle of a fire (heat, fuel, air). The Fire has three essential elements: heat, air, fuel. Only the three elements meet a suitable condition can the fire occur. If we remove any one of the three elements, the fire will be put out. Oil fire is usual on board, we can use three basic ways to put out the fire, i.e. isolating mode, cooling mode and stifling mode.Lesson 12Task31. Please talk about the ISPS Code.ISPS stands for International Ship and Port facility Security. The ISPS Code contains detailed security-related requirements for Governments, port authorities and shipping companies in a mandatory section (Part A), together with a series of guidelines about how to meet these requirements in a second, non-mandatory section 2. Please talk about the ISM Code.ISM stands for International Safety Management。
