口语救生圈PART2答题例:迟到的经历
Describe an important occasion when you were late.
You should say:
when this happened;
what occasion you were late for;
why you were late;
and explain the result of your being late.
例:
Well, I was late for the English Literature exam at the end of last semester. At that time, I was supposed to be in the classroom before 9:00 a.m. But I didn’t get there until 9:30.
How could I be late in such an important occasion? Well, the alarm clock was to blame for my unpunctuality. It always worked fine, though it might go a little bit faster sometimes. I never thought it should conk out on me on that day. It certainly didn’t deserve my trust. Anyway, at about 9:10, I woke up, wondering why the clock hadn’t gone off yet. I h ad a sinking feeling when I saw the clock was showing 24:00. After checking out the time on my cell phone, I got dressed and grabbed a pencil and my ID card and then rushed out my apartment in an amazing speed without brushing my hair, let alone washing my face.
I called a cab and finally arrived at the campus in ten minutes. In the lift, I kept worrying about the exam: what if the teacher won’t let me in? What am I gonna tell her? Or, if she or he is really nice and gives me an opportunity to sit the exam, can I finish the paper within one hour? Fortunately, the invigilator was my tutor for the graduation thesis. She didn’t say a word. But according to her wired expression, I knew I must look terrible. Anyway, I managed to fill in all the blanks on the pap er, though I had no idea about some writers’ birth dates or masterpieces. The good thing was that I got a C, which wasn’t too bad considering it was a difficult subject.
So from then on, I would set at least two alarm clocks if I had important things to do the next day.
Notes:
be to blame –该受责备,应承当责任,(是)某种不良后果的原因unpunctuality –不守时

go off –闹铃、警铃等铃响

to happen 不祥之感

口语救生圈PART2答题例:房间
Describe a room you spend most of your time in.
You should say:
where the room is;
what the room looks like;
what you usually do in the room;
and explain how you feel about the room.
例:
Well. The room that I spend most of my time in is my bedroom. Actually, because of my father’s business, my family moved around many times when I was young. And we finally settled down in a newly-built housing estate about six years ago. You just can’t imagine how excited I was when knowing that I could have a permanent bedroom of my own.
It is quite run of the mill at the first glance. The wall is white and the floor is covered with light yellow square ceramic tiles. But if you take a closer look at it, you will marvel at the ingenuity of the designer. There is an emerald green apple-shaped light on the ceiling. It makes me happy when I lie on the bed staring at it and doing nothing. Beside my bed, there is a big built-in desk and several closets. I have to say, every space of my room is perfectly utilized.
Most of time, I would study in my bedroom. It is well-lighted.
I don’t have to turn on the table lamp in the day time. It is in this room that I went through a hard time preparing for the college entrance exam whole-heartedly. So it means a lot to me. Apart from studying, I’ve planted quite a lot of small green plants and flowers on the windowsill. My room would be full of vitality when the light shines in through the window. Staying in this room makes me feel safe and calm. You know, as the door is closed, me and all the secrets, perplexities or joys are locked in this private space. Sometimes, I just love being alone and enjoy a little bit of privacy.

Describe a film about real people or events.
You should say:
when and where you saw this movie;
how you knew this film;
what story the movie tells;
and explain how you feel about this movie.
例:
I’ve seen quite a few films based on real stories, most of which are from
Hollywood. The one I’d like to talk about is Titanic, which is truly a masterpiece of the world-renowned director James Cameron.
What story it tells:
The film is a romance story set amid the sinking of Titanic - the most astonishing shipwreck in history, which caused the deaths of over a thousand people. The director fully captures the horror and scale of the tragedy, and delicately portrays the love between Jack, a third class passenger who was a talented, yet penniless artist, and Rose, a first class passenger who was supposed to marry a proud and wealthy guy.
When and where you saw it
I think it’s safe to say that almost everyone has seen it. And I actually saw this film several months ago, in a 3D theatre with my friends.
What you feel about the film:
I went to see the film because everyone was talking about it, and I really wanted to find ou t what all the fuss was about. Having watched it, I have to admit, it is truly one of the best films I've ever seen. I particularly applaud the scenes that depict the love between Jack and Ross. For example, there was a scene that Jack gave up the small piece of wooden slab to Rose when they were both soaked in nipping cold water. It tugged at my heartstrings as I watched Jack slowly lose his strength and temperature and finally stop breathing. Ending:
Well, to sum up, I think the movie is really sad but inspirational, for it makes me believe that love can triumph over the fear of death.

Describe a leisure activity you like to do near the sea.
You should say:
what the activity is;
how often you do it;
how difficult it is to do it;
and explain why you like the activity.
例:
Actually, there are quite a lot of popular leisure activities people do near the sea, such asstrolling along the beach, writing characters or drawing pictures on the sand, or playing beach volleyball. Lucky for me I grew up near the sea. When I was little, I could go there everyday with my playmates, doing all kinds of fun things. It was more like a large playground for us. There’s something I still like to do when I am at the beach in my hometown - digging into sand for shellfish such as clams. It is a very relaxing activity. Minimal
thinking is required. All you need to do is keep digging slowly and gently. If you dig them with great strength, you would probably end up with lots of smashed shells. Each time I can bring home a little bucket of clams. It doesn't necessarily mean that I am very patient. I just love to spend hours doing things I like. And I bet few people wouldn't love digging clams as it is so easy and fulfilling. You can imagine how happy I am carrying so many clams home before sunset. Because of me, my family would have one morepalatable dish on the table.

Describe a foreign language, other than English, that you would like to learn.
You should say:
what it is and where it is spoken;
how you would learn it;
what difficulties you might have when learning it;
and explain why you would choose to study this language.
例:
Well. The language I’ve always wanted to learn is Japanese,
because I believe there are multiple benefits of learning it. First of all, I can enjoy Japanese TV dramas without referring to the Chinese subtitles. Moreover, I can travel to Japan independently and communicate with local people. And it even means more job opportunities for me. I can be an interpreter if my company is doing business with Japanese.
As we all know, learning a new language is far from being an easy task. I have been fully aware of it since I began to learn English. In order to learn it well, I think it is very necessary to sign up for an elementary course of Japanese first. I can hardly pronounce the basic 50 Japanese letters correctly without the instruction of a qualified teacher. Besides, I need to spare some time everyday to memorize the vocabulary, basic sentence structures, and some expressions frequently used in daily life. I should also make good use of my time by listening to the recordings of texts on my daily commute. Therefore, an MP3 player is a must have for language learners.
It’s said that language is like the ocean. We could only learn it drop by drop. Nobody short of perseverance can actually acquire a language. If I can balance my work and the study of Japanese, and keep learning it for a period of time, let’s say two or three years, I’m sure I will be able to communicate w ith Japanese effortlessly.
Notes:
Japanese TV dramas –日剧
Chinese subtitles –中文字幕

Describe a mathematics class you attended in primary school. You should say:
when you had the class;
what the teacher taught;
what you did;
and explain what you learned from the class.
I’d like to talk about a math class about using abacus, which took place when I was in the second grade.
I remembered it so well because at that time I bought a brand new abacus specifically for that course. It was very lovely indeed, an ebony wooden frame with ivory white beads. And all my classmates bought one too. We were all excited in playing beads and making great noise before the teacher entered the classroom.
The teacher first had a brief introduction of the abacus, mainly about the history and the importance of it. We were greatly surprised when she pointed out that abacus could even domultiplication and division. However, she only taught us the most basic addition coz the others would be too difficult for us to understand. Later, I followed her instruction and worked outsome addition problems successfully. I bet most students including me wished to use it during math exams! In fact, it was the only abacus class I had in primary school.
I felt proud when my teacher said: abacus is a great invention of Chinaand still used in many countries. But I have never used it to solve any math problems since then, coz a handy calculator would totally meet my need. Just like other brilliant inventions such as printing and gunpowder, it has become a thing of the past.
Notes:

Describe a robot you know.
You should say:
What sort of robot it is;
What it looks like;
What it can do;
And explain how you felt about the robot.
例:
Well, I have a particular liking for all sorts of science fiction movies and always fancy what the future life would be with the development of science. A robot I saw in my friend Lee’s house made me believe that though the current robots are not as sophisticated as those depicted in I Robot, a box office hit starred by Will Smith, the advent of highly intelligent robot is just a matter of time.
In fact, it is hard to define this robot. I might as well call it a housekeeper. When I entered into my friend’s living room, a black cylinder-shaped robot came to say hi. It just looks like Eve, the white elegant robot in the animation film named WALL-E. Actually, the original words it said were: Welcome back Lee… Oh, you brought a friend. Welcome. I literally jumped out of my skin by such a smart machine, which spotted me as a stranger at first glance. Lee calmed me down and said it was not rocket science since the technique of facial recognition was pretty common. Later, I found it was cleaning the house like a vacuum cleaner in a very organized way without making any noise. It would avoid the obstacles and clean every corner of
the house. I guess it has a clear perception of the layout of the house. What’s mo re, I even saw it recharge itself automatically through a socket at the foot of the wall. Science is truly amazing!
Though many people may argue that mechanical devices take over jobs of million’s manual labourers, I believe they do more good than harm to us. At least they can take up some daily boring household chores and enable us to put our feet up after work.
Notes:
a particular liking for –对……特别的喜好
science fiction movies –科幻电影
fancy –这里表示“幻想,想象”,fancy 还可做形容词,表示“昂贵的,精选的”,例如 a fancy car 一辆豪华轿车

Describe a person who became your good friend at your first encounter.
You should say:
who the person was;
when you first met the person;
what you did together;
and explain why you became friends when you first met each other.
例:
Well. Many of us including me had the experience of finding a kindred spirit in someone we first met, though it’s hard to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. Anyway, there was a girl named Wendy who became my intimate friend in the first day of my junior high school.
At that time, she was sitting next to me. We liked to share our past life experiences to see if we ever met each other before. Being talkative and playful, we often had chitchat in classes andplayed tricks on others. I still remember a nasty thing we did to a boy sitting in front of us. At that time, we both caught a cold and had a running nose. Therefore, we save a lot of tissues after blowing nose. Instead of throwing them in the trash can, we decided to make good use ofthem. We made a nice box out of a cardboard and put all the tissues we used in it, and then gave it to that boy as a gift. Just as we expected, he accepted it quite merrily but soon let outa scream of horror. Well. It is really awful as I think about it now. Apart from these, we also behaved like good students and would discuss our study during breaks. And we went home together by bike everyday.
I once read a line somewhere that people would normally laugh at you when you make a fool of yourself but few people will fully understand and accept your whimsical ideas and even do the same things like you. Well, I guess she belonged to the latter and I really appreciated that. Those memories between us are held dear to my heart and become much fonder as time goes by.

Describe a time when you helped someone.
You should say:
who you helped;
how you helped them;
why you helped them;
and explain how this person benefited from your help.
例:
Well. There are times when people need other’s help and lend a helping hand to others as well. I am no exception. Last year, I helped my roommate to see a doctor as she could barely walk because of the great pain caused by kidney stone. Actually, it was in a snowy morning, I waked up and saw that she was trembling all over and as white as a sheet in her bed. She thought it would be alright after a while. Without a second thought, I took all the cash I had and helped her to get dressed, and then we hurried to the nearest hospital in a taxi. However, after all the difficulties we had in catching a taxi and all the coldness and pain my roommate suffered, the hospital did not put an immediate end to it. We had to stand in a long line to pay the registration fee first. What pissed me off was
that there were still more patients before us waiting to see the doctor. Later, with prescription in hand, I had to do the whole waiting thing again to pay for and pick up medicine separately. Thankfully, the acute pain of my roommate was greatly relieved by a shot of painkiller. As we returned to school, I put her to bed and saw her grateful look.
For my part, I think it is quite natural to help people we care about and expect nothing in return. And I believe a friend in need is a friend indeed. Besides, I do enjoy the feeling of being needed.
Notes:
there are times when –有时候
lend a helping hand –伸援手
as white as a sheet –形容脸色苍白
put an immediate end to –使……快点完毕

口语救生圈part2答题例:有意义的歌
Describe a song that has special meaning for you.
You should say:
what song it is;
when you first heard it;
what the song is about;
and explain why this song has special meaning for you.
例:
Well, I'd like to talk about a new song of Tylor Swift named
Ronan. I heard it on Sina microblog several days ago, and then googled the story behind the song.
I have to say it is a heart-wrenching song. The lyrics are a mother's words to her four year old boy, Ronan who passed away after fighting with brain cancer for nine months. Being a sentimental girl, I shed silent tears when Tylor sings softly: I remember you dancing before bedtime... I love you to the moon and back.... It's all about the mother's great sorrow, and her endless love for the baby. And it's pitiful that a boy, a bubbly wide-eyed angel, who hadn't seen all the good things life had to offer, died so young.
In fact, each day, there are over 40 kids diagnosed with cancer, and more than 40,000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year. These are such astonishing numbers. Because of this, Tylor wrote this song to draw people’s attention all over the world to childhood cancer. I believe it does encourage lots of people to stand up to this kind of illness.
For my part, this song makes me think more about life and death. As life is full of uncertainties, everyone is fragile and helpless in front of death. So I guess we should live in the present, and cherish every moment we have, and everyone we care about.
Notes:
1. Google 可以作动词表示在谷歌上搜索,I googled it 要比I searched it on google. OR I searched it on google dot 地道的多。
2. wide-eyed 是形容词,直译是某人有着无辜的大眼睛,意为innocent and credulous.
3. Things/everything/all/the best life has to offer, 是一个口语中常用的表达,常用来表示“生活的美好”、“生活的一切”。
4. draw people’s attention = make people notice

You should say:
when and how you got this toy;
how often you played with it;
what you did with this toy;
and explain why it was important to you.
例:
Well. When I was little, my granny took care of me for a year or two as my parents were too busy with their work. In granny’s house, I found a peculiar doll dressed in Turkey red, just like a clown. It was ragged with several holes in its clothes. I could even see its infill through some larger holes. But I still loved it for it was the first doll I got, you know, finders keepers. There was a time when I stared at it and hugged it all day long with great curiosity and happiness. And the two of us played many games, most of which were role plays. At that time, I regarded it as a friendly and enigmatic playmate, who wore a big smile all the time but hated talking and moving. However, as I grew older and became truly aware that it was noting but a lifeless doll, I gradually lost interest in it. But I always take it with me when I move to a new place since I am nostalgic and would like to keep it as a precious memento of my childhood memories.
Oftentimes, I would gaze it smilingly and recall many silly but lovely things I once did as a naive kid. Also, I feel a little bit of sadness as I see its patched clothes. The holes of the doll’s clothes were neatly mended by my late granny. It was a pity that I came to know how much she loved me after she was long gone.

Describe a library you visited.
You should say:
where it was;
what it looked like;
what facilities it had;
and explain what influence it had on you.
例:
Well. I would like to say something about my college library. It was a five-storey building resembling the Olympic stadium Bird’s Nest. Though it was a bit far from the dorms, it was always popular among students, especially at the end of a semester.
In fact, most students loved it for it was a quiet place for studying. But I knew it meant much more than that. There were thousands of appealing books, free internet access and online lectures of various topics. Each time I finished reading a book, I felt positive and full of strength in mind. And thanks to the computer room, I got access to many open classes and other learning materials online, which were truly eye opening. What’s more, I met my boyfriend in this very library. So I guess love usually comes when you least expect it. We first spoke to each other because of a book we both wanted to lend. It was a little bit dramatic, wasn’t it?
Anyway, I was grateful for all things that this library gave me. For all four years, I did not fail any subjects, and learning became an indispensable part of my life. I hope all students could go there as often as they can and make full use of it.
I am sure that spending time in the library is much more rewarding than merely frittering it away by playing video games or hanging out with friends all day long.

resemble –像,类似

free internet access –免费上网
get access to - 获得;接近;可以使用

问题:
Describe an important plant in your country.
You should say:
what the plant is;
how you know it;
why it is important;
and explain how much you like this plant.
例:
Well, there are lots of plants which are important to people in my country, such as peonies, orchids, pines and cypresses, to name a few. They are all beautiful as well as ornamental. But what I am going to say is a lot more common and practical. It is peanuts.
When I was little, nearly every family in my village grew peanuts. Therefore, I know exactly how a considerable number of peanuts cling closely to the roots when they are pulled out of soil. You will feel refreshed as you breathe in the soothing
aroma they give out along with the smell of wet soil and grass. To te ll you the truth, I’ve never heard people I know hate peanut. It is so tasty. The goodies made out of the peanuts are necessities for people who drink bears, watch TV or celebrate festivals. Besides, it is extremely useful. We Chinese consume a large amount of peanut oil. And some traditional Chinese medicines contain peanut to cure symptoms like malnutrition and coughing. Most importantly, peanuts are cheap. Anyone can afford to eat them.
I myself love peanuts too. For me, they are not merely a kind of food but a symbol that represents humility and usefulness. Coz unlike nice-looking apples and cherries, which win people’s admiration with their brilliant colo urs, tiny little peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they are ripe. So I would like to take after peanuts, being humble and useful, though not great or nice-looking.
Notes:
1 观点要明确,且观点后面要有相应的解释说明,如Besides, it is extremely useful. We Chineseconsume a large amount of peanut oil. And some traditional Chinese medicines contain peanut to cure symptoms like malnutrition and coughing. Useful的原因是花生可制油,并可入药。
回答时避免流水帐式的简单罗列, 如:Peanut is tasty, useful and cheap.
2一些必要的衔接词、词组有助于梳理答案的层次,例如therefore,to tell you the truth,besides,what’s more,most importantly
3 学习一些实用的表达:
to name a few –举几个例子
a considerable number of –相当多的,数目可观的
tiny little –tiny 和 little 都表示“小”,这里二者连用表示对花生的怜爱之情
take after –表示模仿,以……作为榜样(imitate in behavior; take as a model)

Describe a person you liked in your childhood.
You should say:
who the person was;
what you did together;
why you liked this person;
and explain why you still remember this person.
Well, lots of things about my childhood have faded away from memory as I grow older. But my memories about Kevin withstand the wear and tear of time.
I knew him coz he lived next door to me when I was little. In most people’s eyes, he was a good student who could sail through all kinds of examinations. But for me, he was not merely a diligent neighbor, but a wonderful playmate and thoughtful big brother, though he was just two years older than me. For one thing, it was him who taught me how to swim and overcome one of the most repulsive enemies for girls: worm. We used to swim in crystal clear lakes and catch worms as fishing bait or feed them to some hens and something like that. For another, I believe he even saved my life. One afternoon, we were feeding hens in my grandparents’ back yard. As we finished and headed back home, we found a giant cobra was there, staring at us. I was unable to move with my heart in my throat. I didn’t know how long it had been there and whether it would devour me, Kevin, or the hens. Before I took to my heels, Kevin calmed me down and said a sudden quick move would stir the snake. Luckily, a few seconds later, the snake didn’t make other moves and slowly crawled away. Then we hurried home safe and sound.
Though I’ve never seen him since the last year of middle school, as my family moved to another province, the memories about me and Kevin playing together are as vivid as they first occurred.
