You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions, written by Cao Xueqin(1715-1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. The opera was first performed in San Francisco last September. This year, it will come to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Many of the opera's creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and opera writers. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Huang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heart broken story that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings(布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her on the stage. The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences. Huang told China Daily he was happy to "have made a contribution(贡献)to the land where my parents were born."
(1)Who wrote the opera for the Chinese classic novel A Dream of Red Mansions?
A.Timmy Yip.
B.Cao Xueqin.
C.Jia Baoyu.
D.David Henry Huang.
(2)The opera was ________.
A.sung in poetic Chinese
B.first performed in Beijing
C.performed in China after one year
D.performed in many languages
(3)Which of the following is NOT a difference between the book and the opera?
A.The language used.
B.The sad love story.
C.The number of characters.
D.The whole family's story.
(4)Why did the creators make the book into an English-language opera?
A.Because they wanted to introduce the Chinese classic to the Western societies.
B.Because they thought the story was too sad and wanted to change it.
C.Because they have backgrounds in both Chinese and Western cultures.
D.Because they hope to help Chinese people to learn English better.
How do animals recognize(识别)human's faces? This question is at the heart of Chinese American scientist Doris Tsao's research. Tsao was known as one of the winners of 2018 MacArthur Award(麦克阿瑟奖)—one of the highest academic(学术的)honors in the US. Each year, the MacArthur Foundation chooses twenty to thirty talented people and gives money for their work.
Tsao's team does some experiments with monkeys. The scientists found out that there are about 200 nerve cells(神经细胞)in the monkeys' brains. They can help the monkeys to recognize faces. Each cell can recognize a different facial characteristic, such as the shape of our face or the color of our skin. With all of the information, monkeys can build a picture of a person's face in their minds.
Through their study, the scientist showed us how monkeys "see" human faces in their own minds. They showed the monkeys pictures of some different human faces. At the same time, they recorded the activity of every nerve cell in the monkeys' brains. Then, they were able to use computer to study this brain activity and finally find out the faces that the monkeys "saw" in their minds.
Although the study was about monkeys, scientists believe that human beings might recognize faces in a similar way. Police could use this technology in the future. They could recreate the face of a bad guy by recording a witness'(目击证人)brain activity, Tsao told the Daily Mail.
(1)What can help the monkeys recognize a person's face?
A.Eyes.
B.Skin color.
C.Nerve cells.
D.Experiments.
(2)How did the scientists find out the faces in the monkeys' minds?
A.By putting microchips into the monkeys' brains.
B.By asking an artist to draw pictures of the faces.
C.By recording the brain activity and studying it with computer.
D.By showing the pictures of human faces to the monkeys.
(3)Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The MacArthur Foundation chooses hard-working people.
B.Tsao believes this technology could be used to find bad guys.
C.There are more than 200 cell nerves in a monkey's brain.
D.Scientists think humans recognize faces in a different way.
(4)What is the best title of the passage?
A.Where We Can Find a Bad Guy
B.How Monkeys See Us
C.What Human Faces Are Like
D.Why the Experiments with Monkeys Are Successful
Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair, or your fridge? Probably they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, thanks to the so-called "Internet of things".
The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. Earlier this year, a Samsung CEO spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, no matter whether it's a fridge or a washing machine.
So, how do household(家用的)objects that are part of the Internet of things work? For example, an Internet-connected camera could help people feel safer in their homes. It can know people's faces and has an infrared sensor(红外传感器), so even if it's dark it can see when someone passes by and send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who's there. If the person is someone you don't know, it can tell you that, too. Think of a common chair, when connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.
But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or sofa to the Internet, there may be some problems. Because many early connected-home objects don't have built in security systems, which means they could be hacked(被黑客攻击)easily. Moreover, it could be difficult to get these new machines to work together especially when they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2016.
So, picture this: you enter your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.
(1)What does the article mainly talk about?
A.Advantages of living with the Internet.
B.Disadvantages of living with the Internet.
C.The coming "Internet of things".
D.The impossible "Internet of things".
(2)Which of the following can support the idea "how will household objects connected to the Internet work"?
A.A fridge connected to the Internet.
B.Dog food bowls connected to the Internet.
C.A washing machine made by the Samsung Company.
D.An Internet-connected camera with an infrared sensor.
(3)The underlined words "security systems" mean ________ in Chinese.
(4)Which of the following words best describes the writer's attitude to the "Internet of things"?

You might think

在从句中,wasting a little bit of food,动

(2)Refuse to waste food.

也用到固定短语:refuse to do sth.

Refuse to waste food.
(3)35 million tons of food. Chinese people wasted 35 million tons of food each year.

That is enough to feed the entire country
of South Korea for a whole year.

本句中的That指代前句中的35 million tons of food。

35 million tons of food.

(5)To ask/tell/encourage people to save food./To ask/tell/encourage people not to waste food.

To ask/tell/encourage people to save food./To
ask/tell/encourage people not to waste food.

(1)Don't shout/No shouting; against the rules “不要大声喧哗”为祈使句,否定形式在动词原形shout前加Don't,或者用No shouting。

违反规定against the rules,在助动词will后动词使用原形。

(2)so that; suffer from 根据句意可知,可使用so that来引导目的状语从句,意为“目的是……;为了……”。

(3)are always told; not to give up 根据句意以及本句主语We可知,主语是动作的承受者,与动词是被动关系,要使用被动语态。

告诉某人做某事tell sb. to do sth.,总是always,放弃give up,且频度副词always在句中习惯上位于系动词之后,实义动词之前。

(4)that/which I rode 根据句意及句子结构可知,本句为包含定语从句的复合句,定语从句用来修饰The horse,意为“我骑的”。

(5)If; starts; will be saved 根据句意可知,本句为包含if引导的条件状语从句的复合句,且从句描述的是未发生的事情,时态遵循主将从现。
