Coffee has a history dating back to at least the 9th century and has been a catalyst for social interaction across cultures and eras. Originally discovered in Ethiopia, coffee beans were brought into the Middle East by Arab traders, spreading to Egypt, Yemen, Persia, Turkey, and North Africa by the 15th century. Muslim merchants eventually brought the beans to the thriving port city of Venice, where they sold them to wealthy Italian buyers. Soon, the Dutch began importing and growing coffee in places like Java and Ceylon (largely through slave labor), and the British East India Trading Company was popularizing the beverage in England. Coffee spread across Europe and even reached America.
Where there has been coffee, there has been the coffeehouse. From the 15th century Middle Eastern establishments where men gathered to listen to music, play chess, and hear recitations from works of literature, to Paris' Cafe le Procope where luminaries of the French Enlightenment such as V oltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot came to enjoy a hot cup of joe, coffeehouses have traditionally served as centers of social interaction, places where people can come to relax, chat, and exchange ideas.
The modern coffee shop is modeled on the espresso and pastry-centered Italian coffeehouses that arose with the establishment of Italian-American immigrant communities in major US cities. New York coffee shops were often frequented by the Beats in the 1950's. It wasn't long before Seattle and other parts of the Pacific Northwest were developing coffee shops as part of a thriving counterculture scene. The Seattle-based Starbucks took this model and brought it into mainstream culture.
Although coffeehouses today continue to serve their traditional purpose as lively social hubs in many communities, they have noticeably adapted to the times. Rediscovering their purpose as centers of information exchange and communication, many coffee shops now provide their customers with internet access and newspapers. It has become extremely common to see someone sitting at a Starbucks listening to music or surfing the web on his or her laptop.
Today, big business retail coffee shops are expanding quickly all over the world. Starbucks alone has stores in over 40 countries and plans to add more. Despite its popularity, Starbucks has been criticized and labeled by many as a blood-sucking corporate machine, driving smaller coffee shops out of business through unfair practices. This has even spawned an anti-corporate coffee
counterculture, with those subscribing to this culture boycotting big business coffee chains. Increasingly popular coffee stores such as The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf are also giving Starbucks some stiff competition. In any case, it seems pretty clear that coffee has weaved itself into the fabric of our consumer-oriented culture.

Re-gifting only with care
At this busiest gift-giving time of the year, many of us wonder what to do with the unwanted presents we get. Is it all right to re-gift--to give the unwanted present to someone else?
A gift is a symbol of what a relationship means to us. The best gifts meet the needs or satisfy the desires of the receiver. A gift should be about pleasing the other person, not showing off the taste, wealth or power of the giver. We should give with the other person, not ourselves in mind.
Still, a friend, colleague or family member who knows us well might now and then buy us something that is the last thing we'd buy for ourselves. People in long-term relationships can be surprised at the choices in clothes, music or gadgets(小玩意) made by their friends or relatives.
Re-gifting creates a dilemma because we don't want to hurt the feelings of the gift-giver, but we also feel it's wasteful not to use something that might benefit someone else.
Re-gifting avoids waste and repays a debt of gratitude we owe to someone else, but it presents the risk that the original giver will be hurt if she or he discovers what we did.
Following are a few guidelines for re-gifting:
--Don't use the gift.
--Re-gift soon, so you don't risk re-gifting to the original giver.
--Make sure that the new receiver doesn't know the original giver or is unlikely to run into him or her.
If there's a possibility that the original giver could learn about the re-gift or if he or she expects to see you wearing the gift, consider asking for permission. Let him or her know how much you appreciate the thought behind the gift. A person who understands that a gift is intended to be pleasing will understand. As long as the person who gave the unwelcome gift doesn't mind or won't find out, you can re-gift with a clear conscience. Besides, you can be sure that at least one of the gifts you've received was given originally to someone else.
63. According to the author, the gift that you want to buy for your friend had better be the one _______.
A. that can benefit someone else
B. that you want to buy for yourself
C. that is a necessity for your friend
D. that will surprise your friend
64. In the third paragraph, the author wants to tell readers that ______.
A. people sometimes get the gifts that they don't really like
B. our friends usually choose the best gifts for us
C. we should not buy clothes, music or gadgets for our friends
D. your best friend should know what gift is the best for you
65. What can we infer from the last sentence of the passage?
A. The gift you get is the one you bought for someone.
B. Re-gifting is a very common practice today.
C. You should re-gift at least two gifts each year.
D. More than one of your friends will re-gift their presents to you each year.
66. According to its meaning, the sentence "After all, some people like orange and red sweaters, or the complete recorded works of Wayne Newton (US singer), or fruitcake (which you don't like at all)." should be put at the end of ______.
A. Paragraph 1
B. Paragraph 2
C. Paragraph 3
D. Paragraph 4
D
Once when I was six years old I saw an amazing picture in a book called True Stories from Nature about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor(大蟒蛇)in the act of swallowing an animal. In the book it said: "Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion."
I thought deeply then over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered: "Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?"
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. That’s my Dra wing Number Two.
The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a great painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
In the course of this life I have had a great many encounters with a great many people. And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them. Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out if this was a person of true understanding. But, whoever it was, he, or she would always say: That is a hat. Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge,
and golf, and politics and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such an intelligent man.
67. The writer drew his first picture in order to .
A. show the grown-ups what the book was about
B. frighten the grown-ups trying to enter the forest
C. remind himself of the adventures of the jungle
D. illustrate a boa constrictor’ act of digesting an animal
68. How did the writer understand the grown-ups’ response to his second drawing?
A. He was actually only good at academic study.
B. It was a waste of time for him to keep on drawing.
C. He has difficulty in communicating with the adults.
D. He was good at anything but geography.
69. The underlined word disheartened in Paragraph 4 could most probably be replaced by .
A. discouraged
B. dissatisfied
C. discriminated
D. disturbed
70. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The writer could have become a pilot if encouraged when young.
B. The writer finally changed his opinion of grown-ups.
C. The writer has been showing his two pictures to others ever since.
D. The writer felt nobody could have really understood him.

How to find true friends
