I began studying violin when I was nine, and the next year I began studying with Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school. As I learned I never went to anh big concerts.
Once, Mrs, Ghent held a recital(音乐演奏会)for her students. I played near the end of the recital. When I stood up to play, I was nervous. I went along for a while, but then I forgot the music. I had to stop and looked at the music(乐谱). When the whole thing was finished I cried hiding in my overcoat.
Ms. Ghent came to comfort me. Then she told me that Mischa Elman, a very famous violinist, was going to perform at Carnegie Hall in our city. She hoped I would go there with her. It was great, for the concert was on my birthday in March. My teacher just bought the best ticket as my birthday present.
Carnegie Hall was quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. I don’t remember what Elman played. I only remember that his playing was beautiful. I have seen films of him in recent years, and have been struck by his small size, and particularly by how long his bow seems. But I remember one of that. What I remember most is Mrs. Ghent whispering to me from time to time that he had forgotten something or played a wrong note, or made some other kind of mistake. That was the point of the lesson, or course: everybody makes mistakes but the best players keep going.
I’m a violin teacher now, and I always tell my students who are timid, afraid of making mistakes, that if they are going to make a mistake, they should make it beautifully and with a full tone. I guess I learned that lesson well.
