36-year-old Juan Dual likes to joke that he’s empty inside. Juan’s story began when he was only 13. It was then that he was diagnosed with a terrible disease, which left him with a 99.8% chance of developing cancer of the digestive system. At age 19, right after finishing high-school, Juan underwent a tough operation to take away his colon and rectum. Sadly, it was only the beginning. By age 28, Juan’s disease had affected his stomach and gallbladder so he had to go under the knife again.
Having just recovered from several serious surgeries, Juan Dual decided to accept the invitation of some friends of his parents and travel to Japan. It was there that things started to change for the better. He didn’t speak a word of Japanese, so he spent most of his time walking his dog. One day, the dog pulled harder, and Juan realized that he was still able to jog, and he started to do just that.
Months later, he found himself working in a small, peaceful town in England. There was little in terms of entertainment, but the town was surrounded by hills, so he devoted even more of his time to running. He befriended some like-minded folks and told them what he’d been through, and they seemed amazed at the fact that he was still alive, let alone that he was pushing himself to exercise. That’s when the idea of focusing on motivating others took root in his mind.
With the help of Pepa, a nutritionist, Juan Dual slowly relearned how to eat to keep his energy level high enough to sustain him during physical activity. Eight months after his last operation, he finished the Barcelona half marathon in two hours. He then started training for mountain running and ultra-marathons.

It is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.
A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gasemissions (排放).
“There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水库) itself, as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam thatis used for the hydropower generation.” said lissa Ocko, a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down, it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.
“The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir.” added Ocko.
Through their analysis, Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate
than fossil fuels. The study is in the journalEnvironmentalScience and Technology.
This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. “But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and solar. So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.
8. How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By conducting experiments.
C. By referring to previous studies.
D. By analyzing causes and effects.
9. What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?
A. Vegetation and soils.
B. Heat and sunlight.
C. Pollutants in the reservoir.
D. Components of the generators.
10. What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?
A The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.
B. Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.
C. Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.
D. Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Scientists urge an end to hydropower.
B. Hydropower is not necessarily green.
C. Hydropower is worse than fossil fuels.
D. Renewable energy is a complicated issue.
D
The health benefits of staying active are already well-known. It can help you manage weight, keep blood sugar levels down and reduce risk factors for heart disease.
Now, a new study suggests that regularly playing sports, especially badminton or tennis, is not only healthy but also reduces your risk of death, at any age, by approximately 50%. This is a big scale population study to explore the health benefits of sports in terms of death rate. The study evaluated responses from 80, 306 adults aged 30 and above inEnglandandScotland, who were surveyed about their health, lifestyle and exercise patterns.
After adjusting factors such as age, sex, weight, smoking habits, alcohol use, education and other forms of exercise besidesthe named sports, the researchers compared the risk of death among people who took part in a sport to those who didn’t. The percentage of reduced risk of death was found to be: 47% for racket(球拍)sports,
28% for swimming and 15% for cycling.
In addition to this, the study didn’t find any significant reduction in the risk for sports like running and football. The findings also exposed that over 44% of the participants met the guidelines for the recommended exercise levels to stay fit and healthy, which amounts to 150 minutes of moderate(适度的) physical activity in a week.
Does this mean you stop running or playing football and switch to tennis instead? Every kind of sport and physical activity has different physical, social and mental benefits attached to it. The apparent lack of benefits of running and football could result from several variables that were not taken into account.
Being active helps you feel happier and live longer. So, the most important step is to take part in any kind of sport that you are likely to enjoy and follow in the long term.
12. How is the study conducted?
A. By doing comparative experiments.
B. By analyzing previous data.
C. By evaluating survey information.
D. By tracking participants for a long time.
13. What does the underlined part “the named sports” refer to?
A. Ball sports.
B. Racket sports.
C. Individual sports.
D. Traditional sports.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A. Few people will play football.
B. Tennis will become more popular.
C. The result of this study is wrong.
D. The study needs to be further improved.
15. What does the author advise people to do?
A. Stick to any sport that you like.
B. Play badminton and tennis only.
C. Stop running and playing football.
D. Do any sport according to guidelines.

Before the holiday, I thought about doing something meaningfully. Suddenly, I remembered that there was a lot of primary school students putting up small shops and sell red bags on the street last Spring Festival. Wanting to have a try, so I begged my father to support him. He bought some lovely red bags and small toy. For the first time in my life I begin to sell things at the gate of the park. This experience of selling taught me the secret of communicating strangers, and I understood what hard it is for my parents to make money.

Lesia Cartelli was badly burned in a gas explosion at her grandparent’s house at age 9. In fact, the burns were so severe that her own grandfather didn’t recognize her. But now, this brave woman uses her injured past to help other burn victims find healing.
On that terrible day,Lesia and her cousin were playing in their grandparent’s basement. A gas leak caused the whole house to blow up. The explosion threw many of the 9 family members in the home across the street. Already a fighter,Lesia pulled herself out of the ruins. Flames still covered her little body,so she rolled in the dirt and snow to put them out.
“It was all face, hands, back and it had burned around my waist,”she says. Lesia’s own grandfather thought she was someone else because of how badly she was burned. As nursing staff loaded her into the ambulance, her grandfather tried to leave. He thought the house ruins still held his granddaughter’s body. Even though Lesia was right in front of him,he didn’t realize it was the same child.
Catching a glimpse of her reflection in the ambulance window helped Lesia understand why her grandfather didn’t recognize her. Burns covered 50%of her body and fire burned off all her hair.
Lesia spent several months in the hospital, undergoing surgeries and skin grafts(移植). Once released,Lesia’s scars(疤)drew stares and questions from people. so she started isolating herself.
“When I was burned, everything in my life changed,”she said. “My friendships changed. I hated going to schoo1. You are coping with things you never had to cope with before. People staring at you. People asking questions. Why do you look like that?”
Lesia could have remained isolated her whole life. When bad things happen,we can always choose to move backwards or to let God give our pain purpose. Lesia chose the latter, realizing she was put on this Earth to do more than just survive.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
