It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socializing with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front.
German troops held up Chris tmas trees with signs “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been
trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.
Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot. By March 1915 the socializing movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.
Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce (休战). On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Boston played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it described.
You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the poten tial we have as humans, and contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless
people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different.
24.The soldiers began socializing with the enemy because ________.

B.it was the best way to avoid being killed
C.they feared that they would be caught

A.They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.
B.They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.
C.They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.
D.They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.
26.The underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.
A.satisfied B.shocked C.amused D.confused 27.The author uses the story of the soldiers to imply that human beings ________.
A.are not trustworthy under stress

C.are basically caring and kindhearted
D.will always do what is in their own self-interest

A water lily painting, Water Lily Pond, by Claude Monet, the French impressionist artist, was sold for more than $80 million Tuesday, breaking the auction(拍卖)record for himself. Water Lily Pond was part of a four-work collection of water lily paintings that Monet put up for sale during his lifetime.
The four paintings of Monet's water lily garden were signed and dated by the artist in 1919. "After a fierce bidding battle between a number of buyers in the room and on the telephone, the painting finally was sold to a collector for $80. 4 million, setting a new world record price for the artist at auction." said Olivier Camu, a scholar of impressionist art.
The last record for a Monet work was set in May when Le Pont du chemin de fer a Argenteuil sold for $41.4 million.
The painting sold Tuesday was bought at a 1971 New York auction for $ 320,000. It has not been exhibited since.
Monet's later works had unique characteristics, especially Grandes decorations, another good example, which was bedded in Musee de I'Orangerie in Paris five months after Monet's death in 1926.

People with an impulsive personality refer to those who tend to do things without considering the possible dangers or problems first. According to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia, such people may be more likely to have food addiction. The study found that people exhibiting impulsive behavior weren’t necessarily overweight, but impulsiveness was related to a direct relationship with food, and therefore, less healthy weight.
Food addiction has been compared to addictive drug use. Studies have linked the dopamine (多巴胺) release that occurs after tasting delicious food to the dopamine release that happens when people consume other addictive substances.
Impulsive behavior involves several personality traits (特点). Two of these traits, known as negative urgency and lack of perseverance, were particularly associated with food addiction and high BMI (身体质量指数) during the study.
Negative urgency is characterized by the tendency to behave impulsively when experiencing negative emotions. Some people might drink alcohol or take drugs. For others, it could mean eating to feel better. Lack of perseverance is when a person has a hard time finishing hard or boring tasks. People with a lack of perseverance might have difficulty attempting to change addictive eating behavior, which could also cause obesity.
“Impulsi veness might be one reason why some people eat in an addictive way despite motivation to lose weight,” said Dr. Ashley Gearhardt, a clinical psychologist. He was involved in developing the Yale Food Addiction Scale in aid of those people. “We are theorizing that if food addiction is really a thing, then our measure, the Yale Food Addiction Scale, should be related to helping control impulsive action,” said Gearhardt.
Clinical psychologist Dr. James MacKillop, whose lab was conducting the study, believes that therapies used to treat addictive drug behavior could help people who suffer from addictive eating habits.
“Most of the programs for weight loss at this point focus on the most obvious thi ngs, which are clearly diet and exercise,” MacKillop said. “It seems that managing strong desires to eat would naturally fit in with the skills a person would need to eat healthily.”
32.According to Paragraph 1, the result of food addiction is ________.
A.less healthy weight B.motivation to lose weight
C.negative emotions D.taking alcohol or drugs
33.How does the author introduce the two personality traits in Paragraph 4?
A.By making comparisons and conclusions.
B.By explaining causes and effects.
C.By presenting questions and answers.
D.By giving definitions and examples.
34.What can be inferred about the Yale Food Addiction Scale from the text?
A.It has been successfully carried out among overweight people.
B.It might help some impulsive people with food addiction to lose weight.
C.It will prove whether food addiction is a problem to impulsive people.
D.It is theoretically a proper treatment for addictive food and drug behavior.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Dopamine release caused by food addiction
B.Food addiction compared to drug use
C.Impulsive personality linked to food addition
D.Food addiction contributing to obesity
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。

It’s natural t o greet friends with a smile and a wave . 36 But what happens if your face and body send mixed messages ? Would someone
be more likely to believe the look on your face or the way you hold your body ?
Scientists have recently dealt with these questions. They found that when a person is looking at your face , she might not believe what she sees if your body language doesn’t match the feeling that your face shows.
37 Previously , they had found that the tone of a person’s voice can
be more important than the words that are spoken. For example , most people tend not to believe a person who says in a flat voice , “ I’m so excited.”
When it came to emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language , most scientists suspected that the face was more important.
To test if this was true , psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated faces and isolated bodies (with faces blurred out(模糊的)) that showed anger or fear . 38 An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A scared face had high eyebrow and a slightly open mouth. 39 A scared body had arms forward and shoulders square , as if ready to defend.
These results told the researchers that mixed signals can confuse people. Even when people pay attention to the face , body language subtly influences which emotion they read. 40 If you want to be understood ,
it helps to avoid sending mixed messages.
A.Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists.
B.So , your body language is important for telling people how you feel.
C.Scientists feel new to study the mixed message that confuses people.
D.An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle , as if ready to fight.
E.Body language can sometimes be misunderstood in different culture backgrounds.
F.When you do this , your face and body work together to show your friends that you’re happy to see them.
G.They also showed pictures in which angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies.

Compared with traditional ones, self-organized tours are rapidly gaining a popularity among the youth.
During a self-organized tour, arrangements of sightseeing can be flexible and changeable depend on our own interests. Thus, we can spend the time free and head for our favorite destinations directly, only in which way can we fully expose us to the local cultures and customs.
Besides, self-arranged tours can bring about great inconvenience in the arrangements of transportation and accommodation. At the same time, the discounts which a group of tourist can often enjoy in restaurants and hotels may not be available. Also, lack of safety makes easy to get hurt.
In my opinion, the advantages of a self-organized tour seems to outweigh its disadvantages.
How a wise choice it is to go on a self-organized tour, that helps us enjoy ourselves to the fullest.
