W = Reporter M = Jim
W: Hello Jim. I'm from your local newspaper the Daily Post and I'd like to ask you some questions about the London marathon race that you've just finished.
M: That's right. What would you like to know?
W: Firstly, for the benefit of our readers, exactly how long is the marathon?
M: It's 26 miles 385 yards, or if you'd like it in metric it's 42,195 kilometers.
W: Thanks. Now how many runners were there altogether?
M: More than ever this year... there were 16,417.
W: My goodness, that's a lot! What position did you finish in the race, Jim?
M: Well, I'm quite pleased with my performance. I came 2,014th.
W: That's better than last year, isn't it?
M: Yes, I finished 3,470th then--but it was my first effort.
W: By the way, what time did the race start today?
M: 9 o'clock. And the winner finished at 11:30.
W: So he took two and a half hours. That's excellent. How long did you take?
M: Three and three quarter hours--but I know I can do better. Did you know that the record is 2 hours 10 minutes?
W: I didn't know. That's fantastic! Do you know how long the slowest runner took?
M: No... he hasn't finished yet!

填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:programme (s).)
解析:[听力原文]6-10
Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please. On behalf of the Hospitality Department, first I welcome you to the City Zoo. Now I'd like to explain the program we've arranged for you here this afternoon. There'll be three animal shows. The first show will begin at three o'clock in the marine arena. And you'll certainly be attracted by the dolphins' and the killer whales' interesting--and sometimes silly—actions. After that comes the second show. This is feeding the monkeys and apes at four o'clock, in the primate center. Please don't feed the animals with any sweets, biscuits, or fruit you may have brought with you, because these kinds of food can upset the animals' normal diet. You can, of course, help the staff in feeding the apes and monkeys with specially-prepared food, and in playing with the monkeys, too. The last show will begin at 4:30 in the giant bird cage. Dr. Smith will be with you as your guide, he'll point out to you more than 300 species of birds from Central and South America. If you have any questions about these shows or other forthcoming events at the zoo, please ask the people at the information desk at the main entrance. They'll be very happy to help you. I hope you'll enjoy your visit. Thank you very much.

C.Because we all enjoy reading books.
D.Because man is never satisfied even if he has everything he wants.
解析:[听力原文]17-20
What do we mean by a satisfactory standard of living? Obviously, it must include the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter.
To obtain these necessities on a regular basis, a person must have a reliable income. But we have other needs which we would probably also describe as basic, for example, health and education facilities and security.
All of these we may define as our needs. But most of us would be far from satisfied if we had nothing more than these provided for us. We all enjoy having extra income to spend on things such as books, sports, or hobbies. Sometimes we save some of this extra income to provide for future expenditure of this type on holidays, for example. So in addition to our basic needs, we must add our wants. Our standard of living is the degree to which these needs and wants are satisfied.

(27) plans call only (28) a reduction in the number of cars (29) into the parks each day, but (30) , tourists may have to leave their cars at the gates and then either visit the park on foot (31) use park (32) (33) , stores and hotels may no longer be allowed within park boundaries and even the number of campgrounds may be restricted.
Denali National Park in Alaska serves as an excellent (34) for this new type of park, one which has been changed only slightly from its (35) state. 八、Passage 1(总题数:1,分数:5.00)
Parents now have a popular belief that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, greatly different ideas about how to teach it or how much priority (优先) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is that how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling.
If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher's interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to "play safe". He will be prone to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible (难以辨认的). "It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which included some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centred on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation (动力) to seek improvement.

In the 1960s the West Coast became an important center for rock music. Los Angeles and Southern California are famous for sunshine and surfing. There, a quieter kind of rock called surf rock became famous. The Beach Boys sang songs like "Surfin' U. S. A.", "California Girls" and "Fun, Fun, Fun". These songs made people dream about the good life in California.
San Francisco was a center for young people and rock music in the late 1960s. This was the time of the Vietnam War, student protest, hippies, and drugs. Hippies talked about love and peace. They wore brightly colored clothes and had long hair. They listened to rock and folk-rock music. Drugs were a serious problem during that time. The deaths of three young rock stars, Janis Jopling, Jim Morrison and the great guitar player Jim Hendrix were all related to drugs.
Not all of the rock musicians came from California or the U. S. A.. That was the time of the great British rock groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. British rock musicians had a very important place in the rock music of the 1960s in America.
Another kind of softer rock music was created by the singers. Singers like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor wrote their own lyrics and their own music. Their songs were about love and friendship, good and bad times.
In the 1960s big rock concerts were very welcomed by everyone. The most famous concert was Woodstock. In 1969 in New York State, a million young people came together to hear the rock stars. This peaceful Woodstock concert was the most important musical event of the 1960s.
After World War Ⅱ a great number of black people moved from the South to the big industrial cities like New York, Detroit, and Philadelphia. Many black people lived in poor parts of the city such as Harlem in New York. Musicians wrote and sang about life in the big cities. Life was difficult but music and dancing made it a little easier.
Popular black music had a strong beat for dancing. At first this music was called rhythm and blues. The 1960s called it soul.
In Detroit, a black musician named Berry Gordy set up an all black record company. It was called Motown. Motown or motor town is another name for Detroit, where cars are made. Most of the famous soul musicians like the Supremes, the Temptations, and the Jackson Five recorded with Motown.

十、Passage 3(总题数:1,分数:5.00)
No company likes to be told it is contributing to the moral decline of a nation. "Is this what you like to accomplish with your careers?" an American senator asked Time Warner executives recently. "You have sold your souls, but must you corrupt our nation and threaten our children as well?" At Time Warner, however, such questions are simply the latest manifestation of the soulsearching that has involved the company ever since the company was born in 1990. It's a self-examination that has, at different times, involved issues of responsibility, creative freedom and the corporate bottom line.
At the core of this debate is chairman Gerald Levin, 56, who took over from the late Steve Ross in the early 1990s. On the financial front, Levin is under pressure to raise the stock price and reduce the company's mountainous debt, which will increase to $ 17.3 billion after two new cable deals close. He has promised to sell off some of the property and restructure the company, but investors are waiting impatiently.
The flap over rap is not making life any easier for him. Levin has consistently defended the company's rap music on the grounds of expression. In 1992, when Time Warner was under fire for releasing Ice-T's violent rap song Cop Killer, Levin described rap as a lawful expression of street culture, which deserves an outlet. "The test of any democratic society," he wrote in a Wall Street Journal column, "lies not in how well it can control expression but in whether it gives freedom of thought and expression the widest possible latitude, however disputable or irritating the results may sometimes be. We won't retreat when we face any threats."
Levin would not comment on the debate last week, but there were signs that the chairman was backing
off his hard-line stand, at least to some extent. During the discussion of rock singing verses at last month's stockholders' meeting, Levin asserted that "music is not the cause of society's ills" and even cited his son, a teacher in the Bronx, New York, who uses rap to communicate with students. But he talked as well about the "balanced struggle" between creative freedom and social responsibility, and he proclaimed that the company would launch a drive to develop standards for distribution and labeling of potentially objectionable music.
The 15-member Time Warner board is generally supportive of Levin and his corporate strategy. But insiders say some of them have shown their concerns in this matter. "Some of us have known for many, many years that the freedoms under the First Amendment are not totally unlimited," says Luce. "I think it is perhaps the case that some people associated with the company have only recently come to realize this./

十一、Passage 4(总题数:1,分数:5.00)
It was not "the comet of the century" experts predicted it might be. However, Kohoutek has provided a bonanza of scientific information. It was first spotted 370 million miles from Earth, by an astronomer who was searching the sky for asteroids, and after whom the comet was named. Scientists who tracked Kohoutek the ten months before it passed the Earth predicted the comet would be a brilliant spectacle. But Kohoutek fell short of these predictions, disappointing millions of amateur sky watchers, when it proved too pale to be seen with the unaided eye. Researchers were very happy nonetheless with the new information they were able to glean from their investigation of file comet. Perhaps the most significant discovery was the identification of two important chemical compounds -- methyl cyanide and hydrogen cyanide -- never before seen in comets, but found it the far reaches of interstellar space. This discovery revealed new clues about the origin of comets. Most astronomers agree that comets are primordial remnants from the formation of the solar system, but whether they were born between Jupiter and Neptune or much farther out toward interstellar space has been the subject of much debate. If compounds no more complex than ammonia and methane, key components of Jupiter, were seen in comets, it would suggest that comets form within the planetary orbits. But more complex compounds, such as the methyl cyanide found in Kohoutek, point to formation far beyond the planets; there the deep freeze of space has kept them unchanged.

(1).Why was Kohoutek referred to as "the comet of the century" ?(分数:1.00)
A.It was thought to be extremely old.
B.It passes the Earth once a century.
C.Scientists predicted it would be very bright. √
D.Scientists have been tracking it for a century.
解析:[解析] 从第一段“scientists... predicted the comet would be a brilliant spectacle. But Kohoutek fell short of t hese predictions”可知,第一句“世纪彗星没有像专家预测的那样”是指彗星不够明亮。
(2).In what respect was Kohoutek a disappointment?(分数:1.00)
A.It could be seen only through special equipment. √
B.It did not approach the Earth.
C.It did not provide valuable scientific information.
D.It was moving too rapidly for scientists to photograph.
解析:[解析] 文章里说到,预测结果是慧星的到来会是“brilliant spectacle”光耀夺目的壮观,而实际上too pale to be seen with the unaided eye。
(3).According to the passage, what is one major component of Jupiter?(分数:1.00)
A.Hydrogen cyanide.
B.Methyl cyanide.
C.Hydrogen.
D.Ammonia. √
解析:[解析] 文章倒数第四行:If compounds no more complex than ammonia and methane, key components of Jupiter, were seen in comets.如果混合物只是氮和甲烷,那么在慧星上发现木星的主要元素是氮和甲烷。
(4).Which of the following questions is best answered by information gained from Kohoutek?(分数:1.00)
A.Where were comets formed? √
B.When were comets formed?
C.Where was the solar system formed?
D.How was the solar system formed?。
