第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给(A, B, C 和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us.
I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.
When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before.
I showed up to the tryouts (选拔赛) and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.
Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didn’t expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) after we missed in a gam e. Some think this is crazy, but it isn’t. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “Coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book
that he thinks will help us be tter understand life’s challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters.
In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.
21. Different from other coaches, Coach Brian ________.
A. trained the team to the edge of death
B. expected the team to do well in their studies
C. asked the team to do more reading than training
D. concentrated on skill training
22. The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. made less effort
B. paid no attention
C. showed no interest
D. had less passion
23. In the author’s eye, Coach Brian is ________.
A. professional and serious
B. skilled and cruel
C. hardworking and honest
D. strict and helpful

Claude Sammut, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of New South Wales in Australia, said it would soon be possible for robots to defeat the stars of the future.
For many years, Mr. Sammut has been a member of a project called RoboCup, where robots have been programmed to learn how to play football and compete against others in a football match.
As h e explains, the robots are having difficulty in learning how to control the ball and mo ve the ball on their own, but he is still full of confidence that one day in the future they will show the same skills as Wayne Rooney, who is one of the best football players in the world.
Mr. Sammut also said,“In 1968, John McCarthy and Donald Michie made a bet with David Levy, who was then the chess champion in Scotland, that within 10 years a computer program would be able to beat him. It took a little bit longer than 10 years (nearly 30 years) but eve ntually such programs came into being.”
“In the same spirit of a grand challenge, RoboCup aims to develop a team of robots that can defeat the world soccer champion team by the year 2050. To achieve this, or come even closer to the ambition, the robots will have to be able to sense and act in completely unstructured environments. This will require major advances in perception(感知), decision making, lear ning, and cooperative behaviors. Considering robots are integrated hardware and software systems, great advances will also be needed in sensors (传感器) , energy storage, and materials.”

B. play football and win in real matches

The more you give to others, the more you reap yourself. When you share what you know, you will find that you grow according to the number of seeds that you sow. Such is the one secret to be happier in life.
Spread cheer and teach others to do the same. People will gather around you to hear your wisdom, and feel your love. They will come to receive your sharing of what is inside you, all around you, and the messages coming from above.

All it takes is living from your heart to understand how the cycle of giving and receiving works. Ah yes!You will discov er endless perks!
For many people today, especially women who are socialized to give of themselves, and told they are selfish if they want to do something for themselves, the cycle of giving and receiving gets blocked. When a person gives and does not receive, then the energy flow gets cut off.
Every person must receive,as well as give. Nature intended for that balance in creating that particular flow. Now why would that giving and receiving be a natural law?Because all people need to open themselves to receiving. In receiving you tell yourself you are worthy and deserving of what life has to offer.
28. According to this passage, the author wants to tell us ________.

C. Sharing whatever you have with them.
D. Spreading cheer and teach others to do the same.
30. For the women who are giving, which sentence is right?
A. They don't need receiving or praise.
B. They are selfish if they want to do something for themselves.
C. They need receiving to encourage their energy to continue giving.
D. They can't understand the secret to be happier in life.
31. The reason why receiving is important is that ________.
A. our living together is to receive our possessions.
B. life is all about giving back not receiving from others.
C. the more you give to others, the more you reap yourself.
D. you are worthy and deserving of what life has to offer.

When a person travels quickly over long distance, the place may not be the only change. When her bodily rhythms get thrown off, she suffers from jet lag (时差) —it’s hard to sleep and eat at the right times in the new locations. Humans and all living creatures have an internal biological clock that tells them when to sleep and when to be awake. Jet lag happens because this internal clock takes a while to match the day and night schedule of a new place.
In a new study, scientists tested the effects of jet lag on hamsters (仓鼠) — which might seem strange, since we don’t usually think of hamsters as world travelers. But what happens to hamsters may happen to humans, too.
The researcher didn’t test just one bout of (一次) jet lag — they wanted to know how chronic (长期的) jet lag would affect the brain and thinking behavior of the animals. Previous studies have shown that people with work schedules that change their sleep patterns over and over face higher risks of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Another, earlier study found a connection between cigarette smoking and people whose daily schedules don’t follow their internal clocks — a situation that often leaves them tired.
First, the scientists m oved the hamsters’ schedules forward by six hours. The animals’ eating schedules, for example, were changed. After three days, the scientists did it again —they changed the hamsters’ schedules forward by another six hours. Three days after that, they did it again; and then again three days later. For a full month, the scientists changed the hamster routines every three days.
Specifically, Gibson’s team wanted to know how jet lag would affect the production of neurons, or n erve cells. People are born with many of the neurons they’ll have their whole lives. But these cells also continue to be produced by a part of the brain that helps people store and sort memories, and can move to other parts of the brain.
The hamsters with jet lag produced only about half as many neurons as before. Plus, the hamsters had trouble with basic learning exercises. That means jet lag “is having a long-term effect on learning and memory,” Gibson said.
32. Why do travelers suffer from jet lag?
A. Because travelers cover a long distance at a low speed.
B. Because the bodily rhythms of travelers are at work.
C. Because the biological clock of travelers fail to work.
D. Because travelers can’t adjust to a new environment.
33. How many times was the hamster routines changed in the study?
A. 9.
B. 10.
C. 8.
D. 11.
34. According to the study, a person who always suffers from jet lag will ________.
A. produce more nerve cells.
B. be effective in learning
C. have a poor memory
D. have to do more exercise
35. The main idea of the pas sage is about _________.
A. hamsters are no good travelers
B. travelers may have difficulty in learning
C. people have different sleep patterns
D. jet lag slows hamster brains

I like eating fruit and vegetables what are of great benefit to our healthy. Not only do they prevent us from falling into ill, but they help us lose weight. I used to hate vegetables, but follow the doctor’s advice, I gradually kicked the bad habit. Just as an old saying going, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. However, there are still many children dislike fruit and vegetables. On contrary, influenced by this or that kind of advertisement, many were crazy about junk food. Consequently, they become weaker and weaker instead of getting strong. In my opinion, we must take action to change them.

Dear Andrew,
How nice to hear from you again! I think it is natural for you not to get used to the life there. Here I have some suggestions for you.
First of all,you should respect the local customs there and try to involve yourself in the natives’ lives.Just as the saying goes,“When in Rome,do as the Roman s do.” Secondly, don’t be afraid to communicate with American students and make friends with them.Friendship will bring you happiness.W hat’s more,it is better for you to join in more outdoor activities with your friends, which may help you relax and have fun. Finally, mind your own manners and remain modest and honest when getting along with your friends.
I do hope my suggestions will help.May you adapt to your new life and enjoy your stay there.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
