With schools close in the UK during the COVID-19 outbreak, most children must now be home schooled. Parents have found themselves not only having to balance work and having the children at home but also having to try and teach them. How can you keep your children focused while learning?
Nicola Anderson—Head of Customer Support at the UK’s leading online tutoring service MyTutor, provides new,up-to-date tips to hearten parents at this difficult time and advises how they can structure their children’s days.
One is to keep to a regular timetable so it still feels like your child is taking part in the school day. Ms Anderson said: “ Children of all ages do well on routine and boundaries. Schools provide this in abundance and most children will feel secure and happy if they can follow a similar timetable for their homeschooling. ”
Another tip is to create an environment which is favorable to learning. She said:“The environment should be free from distractions and ideally near to an open window,to provide them with appropriate levels of fresh air and natural light. Some children find it comfortable and helpful to have quiet, instrumental music playing in the background to help them to focus, but this isn’t for everyone. ”
Using technology to help with your children’s learning is also advised. Many schools are offering online classes and resources to help and companies are reducing or even not charging their fees during this time.
It is also important to keep physical exercise as a part of your routine. Joe Wicks, otherwise known
as The Body Coach, has been keeping kids healthy with daily 10-minute workouts for children on
his Youtube channel. Ms Anderson said:“ It can be anything from running around the
garden, walking the dog,a game of football or dancing around your living room!”

We were on the way from Hutchinson to Chicago for a short spring break. For many years I had wanted to take my family on the train. We all had been to Chicago four years ago, and the kids loved
it. Chicago is one of my favorite cities, too, so the thought struck me again last fall to ride the train to Chicago. Of course, flying would have been faster. But I don’t think flying is easier, especially these days, with all the security and waiting in lines at airports.
Though we were tired in the middle of the night, the kids got on the train with the exhilaration of this adventure. “We’re moving,” my son William shouted happily with big eyes as the train began to pull away from the Hutchinson station.
I removed my shoes and lay down to try to finish my night’s sleep. The sleeper car would have better enabled that, but the ordinary train seats were not too bad. An airline flight is a more miserable experience for me: not enough room, two hours of pain with my knees almost touching my chin, the hard seatback in front cracking my kneecaps (膝盖) with every move of the body planted in front of me. On the train I could almost outstretch all of my 6-foot-2-plus body in the generous legroom.
The journey didn’t feel at all as long as it was. We all found the train ride a joy. The car ride would have felt every minute of 13 hours. But on the train you are free to walk around, sit in the observation carriage for a while and enjoy the scenery out the windows, have a nice meal in the dining car, read a book, or play a board game.
In short, the train is all about enjoying the trip, which isn’t something I do so much when traveling by airline or by car, when the trip seems more of a mission (任务) to get there than an experience to enjoy along the way.
Chicago offers much to do for a family. This time, getting there was half the fun.
8. We can learn from the first paragraph that _____.
A.the kids love the train journey
B.it was the first time that the kids were taken on the train
C.the author didn’t enjoy the long train journey
D.Chicago is one of the kid’s favorite cities
9. What does the underlined word “exhilaration” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Tiredness. B.Relaxation.
C.Excitement. D.Worry.
10. In the third paragraph, an airline flight experience is mentioned to show _____.
A.a train ride is more comfortable
B.a train ride is too long
C.an airline flight is miserable
D.an airline flight is easier
11. Which of the following words best describes the whole family’s feelin g about the train journey?
A.Moved. B.Nervous.
C.Disappointed. D.Delighted.
A computer program has been used to predict how people are feeling when they type.
In a study participants were asked to type a particular phrase and the program then estimated if they were happy, sad and so on. Surprisingly it was correct 70 per cent of the time, and the findings could lead to smarter artificial intelligence in the future.
The study published in the journal Behavior and Information Technology was carried out by researchers at the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh, reports Live Science.
In the research 25 people ranging from 15 to 40 years old were asked to retype two paragraphs from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. They also had to enter their emotional state every 30 minutes while doing their regular activities on the computer. This allowed the program an opportunity to understand how their emotions changed their typing style.
Moods tested were joy, fear, anger, sadness, hate, and shame. The result was that the program could identify(识别) a person' s mood correctly 70 per cent of the time. It was most successful in identifying joyfulness with an 87 per cent success ratio, while sadness was the least successful at 60 per cent. The researchers found that the participants were less likely to input (输入) data when they were in a bad mood, which may explain the inexactness of the second result.
However, the findings could have great importance for artificial intelligence, and it may allow computers to get along with us in a friendlier manner, “If we could build any system that is intelligent enough to communicate with humans that is, it can identify user emotions and change its behavior accordingly then using machines could be more ef fective and friendly.” the researchers wrote.
12. Who conducted the study?
A.Lewis Carroll. B.Islamic University of Technology.
C.Live Science. D.Behavior and Information Technology. 13. What were people asked to do during the research?
A.Input words and emotional state. B.Change their typing styles.
C.Change their feelings frequently. D.Show their natural feelings.
14. Why is the result about sadness not so correct?
A.People usually hide their unhappy feelings.
B.The program cannot recognize sadness clearly.
C.The program cannot calculate the data correctly.
D.It's more difficult to collect data when people are sad.
15. What's the importance of the research result?
A.It helps people develop smarter machines.
B.It helps people speed up their typing speed.
C.It will inspire similar studies on people's mood.
D.It clearly explains the relationship between mood and typing.
