A
When the natural climate changes due to global warming, it can surely affect seals. The majority of them live in the Antarctic region, so as the ice is melting, their natural habitat can be seriously affected. These changes don't take place overnight. They can be the result of many years of additional temperatures in the area. The seals then have to find ways to adapt.
Seals depend on the cool air currents to bring plenty of food for them. When the temperatures get higher, there is less and less food and the seal population starts to shrink.Mothers aren't healthy enough to feed their babies. Many of them end up abandoned as the mothers have to leave to find their own source of food.
The fact that their desire to produce young can be changed by the warmer temperatures is frightening too.It is also believed that the warmer temperatures can allow different diseases and viruses to attack the seals. This is a huge concern as they can rapidly wipe out huge numbers of seals out there.
However, these changes in climate and temperature aren't all bad for other species of
seals.Scientists have found that those living in warmer climates are producing more young due to the changes.Research also shows that the females are moving further to find food and water. When they are out of the reach of the governing males, they are more willing to accept the moves of other males in the group.
This is good news too because it means that there will be more selection in the gene pool (基因库) for future generations. It can help the seals as a species adapt to change in their natural environment more easily.
The climate change problem for seals is directly linked to humans. When we take action to change what we let out into the environment, we will make positive changes for the seals. However, it is going to take a very long time to reverse (彻底改变) the effects of what has already been done.
A.A doubleedged sword.
B.An unavoidable disaster for existence.
C.A mirror of evolution.
D.A requirement for more choice in the gene pool.

B
We spend a lot of time on our mobile devices these days and automakers have taken note, rolling out connected cars that make it easy to do nearly everything from your phone.
“We all enjoy those kinds of experiences where you want something and by the push of a button everything gets taken care of for you.You don't have to go here and there and piece a bunch of things together by yourself,〞said Jim Buczkowski, director of Ford electronics systems. He recently introduced FordPass, a mobile platform that lets car owners access services like finding and paying for a parking spot.“Here's the detail of what charges w ill be, and then I submit, and then I receive a QR photo allowing my entry to that parking location,〞said he.
At Buick, the OnStar RemoteLink app connects owners to their cars no matter how far away they are.“This car in Detroit, I could start from here in New York.Or let us say I have the only key to it and my wife in Detroit needs to get in the car, I can unlock it for her from here,〞said Stuart Fowle, manager of Buick communications.
The feature, in fact, harnesses the car's 4G LTE connectivity.Up to seven mobile devices can connect to it at any given time.
“We want people to feel as if they were at home within the car, which a lot of people want to be in just for the driving experience, now they can be in there, and even the passengers can be in there as well for the connectivity experience,〞explained Rob Peterson, marketing manager for Buick crossovers.
But what does that connectivity mean for your privacy? It is important to have personal information to create that individualized, personalized experience, but certainly it will be a consumer's option. For certain consumers, it may not even be an issue. There certainly is a factor where a younger consumer is much more comfortable giving up a lot more privacy and data than an older consumer is, and more likely than not, you are going to see a behavior similar
to how they handle their personal privacy within the vehicle.
Considering how capable our mobile devices have become, perhaps the only question left to answer is: “Who's driving?〞
A.The popularity of FordPass.
B.The advanced technology FordPass adopts.
C.The convenience of FordPass.
D.The huge economic benefits FordPass creates.
解析:选C 推理判断题。

根据第二段中的“We all enjoy those kinds of experiences ...You don't have to go here and there and piece a bunch of things together by yourself〞可知,Jim Buczkowski 表达了人们的客观需求;再结合下文的“Here's the detail of what charges will be, and then I submit, and then I receive a QR photo allowing my entry to that parking location〞可知,Jim Buczkowski 继而阐述了FordPass操作的细节,突出了其便利的特点。

解析:选D 推理判断题。

根据倒数第二段的内容,尤其是“It is important to have personal information to create that individualized, personalized experience, but certainly it will be a consumer's option.〞和“There certainly is a factor where a younger consumer is much more comfortable giving up a lot more privacy and data〞可知,使用这项连接效劳的时候,要想获得特制的、个性化的体验,消费者需要提供个人信息。

由此可推知,使用这项连接效劳时,消费者有可能会泄露自己的私人信息。

C
Everyone is familiar with white fat, which serves as an energy warehouse. Many mammals also have brown fat, which has the unique ability to produce heat.
Brown fat is sometimes mistaken for a type of gland(腺), which it resembles more than white fat.It varies in color from dark red to tan. When the animal is exposed to a cold environment, the color darkens. In contrast to white fat, brown fat has numerous nerves which provide sympathetic stimulation (刺激) to the fat cells.
Brown fat is most noticeable in newborn animals, wrapped round the central organs to keep them warm.In human infants it occupies up to 5% of body weight, then declines gradually.Certain quantities of brown fat can be discovered in adult humans, especially when they are exposed to cold temperatures. Most of brown fat in adults is located in the lower neck.
Exposure to cold leads to sympathetic stimulation of brown fat cell.As in white fat, sympathetic stimulation promotes hydrolysis (水解) of triglyceride (甘油三酸酯), with release of fatty acids. In contrast to other cells, including white fat cells, brown fat cells express UCP1, which gives the cell's mitochondria (线粒体) an ability to produce heat rather than ATP.Within brown fat cells, most fatty acids are immediately combined with oxygen in mitochondria and a large amount of heat is produced.
There is only about 50g of brown fat in the neck region and it switches on and off throughout
the day as it's exposed to different temperatures or if you exercise or eat.But this capacity is much greater in young children compared with adolescents and adults.
The challenge is now to use the knowledge to find out what might switch on brown fat.If it is switched on, we can benefit from it.Brown fat produces lots of heat by burning calories.Unlike white fat, brown fat does not expand our ageing waistlines. And that's why the race is on to find out more about brown fat, and how humans could use it to our advantage, though we would waste energy unnecessarily, and we would sweat a lot and forever be opening windows.
A.Fatty acids. B.Triglyceride.
C.UCP1. D.ATP.

We have all heard the expression: “Remember to stop and smell the roses.〞 But, how often do we really take time out of our hectic fastpaced lives to notice the world around us?
I am as guilty as anyone of tuning out the world in this manner, especially when I am driving on California's overcrowded streets.A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.
I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say.I came to a very busy crossroa ds where the stoplight had just turned red.“All right,〞I thought to myself, “I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack.〞 My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my trance was broken by an unforgettable sight.A young coupl e, both blind, were walking arminarm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The man was holding the hand of a little boy, while the woman was clutching a baby sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Each of them had a white cane extended, searching for clues to navigate them across the crossroads.
Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps —blindness.“Wouldn't it be terrible to be blind?〞 I thought.Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars.I was frightened for them because I didn't know if the other drivers understood what was happening.
As I watched from the front line of traffic (I had the best seat in the house), I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes.Every_car_in_every_direction_came_to_a_simultaneous_stop. I never heard the screech of brakes or even the peep of a car horn.Nobody even yelled, “Get out of the way!〞 Everything froze. In that moment, time seemed to stand still for this family.Amazed, I looked at the cars around me to verify that we were all seeing the same thing.I noticed that everyone's attention was also fixed on the couple.Never skipping a beat, the couple adjusted their course as they followed the coaching.Trusting their white canes and the calls from some concerned citizens, they made it to the other side of the road.As they arrived at the curb, one thing struck me —they were still arminarm.I was taken aback by the emotionless expressions on their faces and judged that they had no idea what was really going on around them.Yet I immediately sensed the sighs of relief exhaled by everyone stopped at that intersection.
As I glanced into the cars around me, the driver on my right was mouthing the words “Oh, did you see that?!〞The driver to the left of me was saying, “I can't believe it!〞 I think all of us were deeply moved by what we had just witnessed. Here were human beings stepping outside themselves for a moment to help four people in need.
I have reflected back on this situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it.Take time to look around and really see what is going on in front of you right now.Do this and you will realize that this moment is all there is, more importantly, this moment is all that you have to make a difference in life.
As I drove away from that busy intersection, I did so with more awareness of life and compassion for others than I had arrived there with.Since then I have made the decision to r eally see life as I go about my daily activities and use my Godgiven talents to help others less fortunate.
Do yourself a favor as you walk through life: Slow down and take the time to really see.Take a moment to see what is going on around you right now, right where you are.You may be missing
something wonderful.

Nextgeneration Transport
It seems unlikely that we'll give up our cars in the near future, but the way we buy fuel and use them will change radically. Some experts believe more than 80 percent of cars worldwide
will be electric by 2050.However, despite such innovations, gasfueled cars will remain popular for many years to come by combining a broad range of new ideas.
As the number of electric and hybrid cars increases, the lithiumion batter y needs improvement.Plus, not every driver has a garage where they can plug into the mains overnight, so the network of charging points needs to expand.
Nevertheless, new technologies may yet get us out of some oldfashioned jams.General Motors, for exampl e, has a vision of the future consisting of remotecontrolled vehicles telling each other what they're doing in order to avoid accidents and congestion and to improve convenience and fuel efficiency.
The big question, though, is when we are finally going to get behind the wheel of a driverless vehicle.Indeed, much of the technology needed for driverless cars is already there.Radar cruise control, motion sensors, lanechange warnings, electronic stability control, and digital mapping are all typical examples.
But the impact of technology doesn't end there. With parking, for example, experiments are already underway to introduce wireless sensor networks that will hopefully put an end to city parking issues and traffic problems. The system works through a series of small plastic sensors. When the sensors are linked via the network, the result is a realtime database of parkingspot vacancies. This information can be displayed to drivers through displays on street signs or available through the screens on smartphones.
The bottom line here is that much of the stress of driving will be removed in the future, with much of the control handed over to the vehicle. All of the signs currently indicate that in the future we'll see time slots on motorways prebooked to avoid con gestion and there will be an increase in carpooling, with reduced tolls to provide incentives, and onboard softs, are that will direct drivers to the location of others wanting to carpool.
As well as making the trip more enjoyable for passengers, it's hoped that handing the control over to the vehicle will prove cleaner, safer and more efficient.Cars will not start if the
driver, who will be recognized by an iris scan, does not have a license or is unauthorized to drive that particular car.Public transport will enter a renaissance era thanks to costs and, most importantly, convenience and energy efficiency.Eventually, all buses and trains will become driverless and so too, one day, will all planes.
