When we think of Paris, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Athens and other European capitals, we think of them as “cities”. When we think of the whole of modern London, that great area covering several hundred square miles, we do not think of it as a “city”, not even a city and its suburbs. Modern London is not one city that has steadily grown larger through the centuries: it is a number of cities, towns and villages that have, during the past centuries, grown together to make one vast urban area.
London today extends for nearly thirty miles from north to south and for nearly thirty miles from east to west. This is the area known as “Greater London”, with a population of nine million. The “city of London” is a very small part of the whole. It is only one square mile in area, and the number of people who live and sleep in the “city” is only about ten thousand.
66. The difference between modern London and other European capitals is that _____.

Allen goes everywhere with Brigitte Anderson, a 54-year-old secretary. He moves around her office at work and goes shopping with her. “Most people don’t seem to mind Allen,” says Brigitte, who thinks he is wonderful. “He is my fourth child,” she says. She may think of him and treat him that way, buying his food, paying his health bills and his taxes, but in fact Allen is a dog.
Brigitte and Allen live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according to rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its people. This level of care costs money.
People in Sweden pay taxes on everything, so they aren’t surprised to find that owning a dog means more taxes. Some people are paying as much as 500 Sweden kronor(克朗) in taxes a year for the right to keep their dogs, money that is spent on dog hospitals and sometimes medical treatment for a dog that falls ill. However, most such treatment is expensive, so owners often decide to pay health and even life insurance(保险)for their dogs.
In Sweden dog owners must pay for any damage their dogs do. A Sweden kennel(宠物园) club official explains what this means: if your dog runs out on the road and gets hit by a passing car, you, as the owner, have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in the
accident.

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by underwater explosions, ocean drilling and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes,
and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels(分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.
Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noise at that level can frighten and confuse whales.
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales’ ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed(流血)and become infected(感染).
Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.
Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect (疑心)that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.
76. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?
A. The man-made noises.
B. The noises made by themselves.
C. The sound of earthquakes.
D. The sound of the ice –breaking.
77. Which of the following is discussed in the second paragraph?
A. Different places with different types of noises.
B. The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.
C. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.
D. The ocean animals’ reaction to noises.
78. From the passage we know that _____.
A. whales are deaf to noises.
B. noises at a certain level may hurt whales.
C. whales are easily confused by noises.
D. noises will limit whales’ ability to reproduce.
79. We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit of one hundred and
twenty decibels would_______.
A. prevent them from doing their research work.
B. benefit them a lot in their research work.
C. do good to their health.
D. increase the industrial output(产量).
80. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?
A. They will try their best to decrease noise.
B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.
C. They will study the effect of different noises.
D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.
