IV. 阅读理解(共20题, 满分80分)

For centuries, the only form of written correspondence (通信)was the letters were, and are, sent by some form of postal service, the history of which goes back a long way .Indeed, the Egyptians began sending letters from about 2000 BC, as did the Chinese a thousand years later.
Of course, modern postal service now are much more developed and faster. depending as they do on cars and planes for delivery. Yet they are still too slow for some people to send urgent documents and letters.
The invention of the fax machine increased the speed of delivering documents even more. When you send a fax you are sending a copy of a piece of correspondence to someone by telephone service. It was not until the early 1980s that such a service was developed enough for businesses to be able to fax documents to each other.
The fax service is still very much in use when copies of documents require to be sent , but, as a way of fast correspondence, it has been largely taken the place of by email .
Email is used to describe messages sent form one computer user to another.
There are advantages and disadvantages with emails. If you send some one an email ,then he will receive it extremely quickly .Normal postal services are rather slow as far as speed of delivery is concerned.
However, if you write something by email, which you might later regret ,and send it immediately, there is no chance for second thoughts. At least, if you are posting a letter, you have to address and seal the envelope and take it to the post box. There is plenty of time to change your mind .The message is think before you email!

D. you need plenty of time to send an email
54.The text mainly deals with_________.

(B)
Among rich countries , people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity per hour worked is the same in the United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed.
In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work less. In other words they have decided to “spend”a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But not in the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be greatly lower taxes in America, which increase the rewards to work. Another reason may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.
Longer hours do of course increase the GDP. So the United States has produced more per worker than, say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in Frence many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same.
It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be compared with other values like family life, which often get lost in interest. It is too early to explain the different trends in happiness over time in different countries. But
it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life balance ?
55.From the text we know that the author ________ .
A. believes that longer working hours is better
B. prefers shorter working hours to longer ones
C. says nothing certain about which pattern is better
D. thinks neither of the patterns is good
56.Which of the following countries has more of its people at work?

C.
Germany. D. America.
57.In the last paragraph, the underlined word “which” refers to_______.
A. family life
B. situations
C. other values
D. trends
58.What message can we get from the text?
A. The GDP of Europe is higher than that of America.
B. Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US.
C. People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer.
D. Americans are happier than Europeans.
59. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Americans and Europeans
B. Staying at Home
C. Work and Productivity
D. Work and Happiness
60. American GDP per head is _________ higher than in France.
A. 20%
B. 30%
C. 40%
D. 50%
(C)
“Get up, the water is coming.” Yan Xinzhi, director of the neighborhood committee of Chaoyang Street, Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province, would knock at the door of every household at midnight to have people collect water; otherwise, the tap water would soon run dry when everyone in the city got up and joined the “water rush” in the morning. Yan, an elderly lady about 60, had served as committee director for more than 20 years; her major work was to rouse her neighbors from their sleep to get water. As time went by, residents could not go to sleep before one o’clock in the morning.
Chaoyang Street was not the only street in Taiyuan that lacked water, and Taiyuan was not the only city in China with water in short supply.
Niu Maosheng, Minister of Water Resources, told China Today that more than 300 cities nationwide lack water; in 108 cities the situation has become critical. The annual deficit of water has reached 6 billion cubic meters, leading to a loss of RMB 200 billion (approximately US $24 billion) in industrial output.
61. As neighborhood committee director, the major part of Yan Xinzhi’s job was to wake up her neighbors at midnight to get water.
62. The passage reveals that all the cities in China suffer from
water shortage.
63. The passage is written by a water expert.
64. The lack of water has lead to a loss of US $24 billion in industrial output.
65. Xi’an i s another city with water in short supply.

One thing Britain is famous for is pubs, and no trip to the UK would be complete without a visit to one of the thousands of pubs across the country.
Pubs play an important part in the social structure of the country. They are places where all ages and social classes mix to talk, do business, or just spend a couple of quiet hours before heading home in the evening.
There are many different types of beer available in pubs. Traditional British beer is called bitter, or ale, and is usually served at room temperature. As a result, the British are famous for their ‘warm beer’! If you prefer a cold beer, ask for lager. This beer is a light yellow in colour whereas bitter is usually a darker brown. All beers are served as pints (500 ml) or halves (250ml). To order, you need to ask for a pint or half, and then name the beer. So, you could say “.”
Wine, red or white, is normally available in all pubs, as are spirits such as whisky, gin or vodka.
It is not, however, necessary to drink alcohol. Non-alcoholic drinks are called soft drinks. You can have juice, lemonade or cola, among others.
If you visit a pub in a group, it is important to pay for your ‘round’. Thi s means that you buy a drink for everyone in your group. Not buying your round is a big social mistake! Remember that you need to order and pay for your drinks at the bar. So,
follow these tips if you want to get the most out of visiting a pub, and, “cheers!”
