her college in September 2015, she was embarrassed to ask for help, but knew she needed it. she’s used the food pantry several times since.
Lone Star Montgomery Campus is among a growing number of US colleges opening food pantries for students. In the Houston area alone, San Jacinto College and the University of Houston Downtown(UHD) have also added them. UHD opened its food pantry in spring 2015. it’s hoping to incre ase its use among students through a program being launched this term. About 100 to 150 students will be awarded food scholarships to use in a new food bank constructed inside the student services building.
“More students of different backgrounds have access to higher education, but that you got in doesn’t mean you have the support coming from home to keep you in,” said Patrick Jefferson, UHD”s assistant vice president for student affairs.
“Many of the students come after work, take their class, then they go home, and they don’t leave their challenges at the front door,” said Jefferson. “We’re recognizing that we just can’t ay. ‘We only worry about our students’ academic challenges.’ We have to think about the student as a whole person.”
The majority of dona tions to Lone Star’s food pantry have come from teachers and students. The food pantry is open from noon until 3 p. m. on Tuesdays and Fridays, but students can request it at another time if needed. Nearly 590 students have used the pantry since it opened last fall.

22.(8分)About six months ago, I was working in a job where I sat at a computer in an office for 50 or so hours each week. My best friend, Dusty, also sat in an office at a computer all day. We often talked about what a waste it seemed to be, spending our time inside in front of a computer all day long. I ended up leaving my job, and so did Dusty. Neither one of us are sitting in an office all day. Last week, Dusty ca me to my home and declared, “I’m going to travel.”
Of course, traveling is exciting. It’s getting to experience new things, getting to be a slightly different version of ourselves, but I think the point is more about the mindset(心态) that it allows for than the actual reality that comes with it. Waking up every day with a sense of excitement for the unknown. Approaching each interaction during the day with a sense of wonder. Not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow, and just about whatever’s right in front y ou.
However, the thing is, we don’t need to be in transit to be able to approach our days this way. It is possible for me to be living my normal life and be excited for the unknown of the day. I meet new people and do new things every day. Yes, they might be in Santa Monica, a few blocks from my apartment, but what’s the difference between a new person here and new person in Australia?
I read an Alan Watts quote recently, and it goes as follows:
“If I ask you what you did, saw, heard, smelled, touched and t asted yesterday, I am likely to get nothing more than the thin, sketchy outline of the few things that you noticed, and of those only what you thought worth remembering. But suppose you could answer, ‘It would take me forever to tell you, and I am much too interested in what’s happening now.’ ”
One generation seems to be eager to expand our horizons(视野). But I agree with Alan Watts. There is a lot of opportunity for horizon-expansion wherever we happen to be. I think I’ll wake up tomorrow, walk down the str eet, and put on my adventurer’s cap.
1、According to the text, the author quit his job mainly because _________.
A.it didn’t pay very well
B.Dusty advised him to do so
C.he wanted to spend some time traveling
D.he didn’t want to stay inside all day long
2、W hat’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A.What makes traveling so attractive.
B.What is most important when traveling.
C.How to find a new version of ourselves.
D.How to spend an unforgettable holiday.
3、The underlined words “in transit” in the third para graph probably mean ________.
A.moving around B.working hard
C.filled with curiosity D.full of enthusiasm
4、What’s the best title for the text?
A.An exciting but normal life
B.Adventures in our own backyard
C.Go to travel and expand your horizon
D.Get outside and explore for the unknown
23.(8分)It hurts to keep secrets. Secrecy (保密) is associated with lower well-being, worse health, and less satisfying relationships. Research has linked secrecy to increased anxiety, depression, symptoms of poor health, and even the more rapid progression of disease. There is a seemingly obvious explanation for these harms: hiding secrets is hard work. You have to watch what you say.
New research, however, suggests that the harm of secrets doesn’t really come from the hidi ng after all. The real problem with keeping a secret is not that you have to hide it, but that you have to live with it, and think about it.
To better understand the harms of secrecy, researchers first set out to understand what secrets people keep, and how often they keep them. They found that 97% of people have at least one secret at any given moment, and people have, on average, 13 secrets.
Across several studies, researchers asked participants to estimate how frequently they hid their secret during conversations with others, and also how frequently they thought about the secret outside of social interactions. They found that the more frequently people simply thought about their secrets, the lower their well-being.
Following up this research, a new paper reveals why thinking about secrets is so harmful. Turning the question around, the consequences of telling secrets are examined. Researchers found that when a person reveals a secret to a
third party, it does not reduce how often they have to hide the secret from others who are still kept in the dark. Rather, it reduces how often their mind wanders toward the secret in irrelevant moments.
Therefore, if you choose to still keep something secret, talking to another person can make the world of difference. Sec rets don’t have to hurt as much as they do.
1、Which is not one of the harms of keeping secrets?
A.Being physically sick. B.Mental problems.
C.Harmed relationships. D.Hiding somewhere.
2、Why is keeping secrets so harmful?
A.Because you must hide them.
B.Because you often think about them.
C.Because it’s difficult to keep secrets.
D.Because you must watch what to say.
3、How can people reduce the harm of keeping secrets?
A.By working hard. B.By keeping 13 secrets.
C.By thinking about the secrets. D.By telling secrets to a third person.
4、Which is the text probably taken from?
A.An advertisement B.A research report
C.A biology textbook. D.A travel brochure.

25.(10分)I’m part of the Roots & Shoots program founded by Dr. Jane Goodall. The program is intended to make and promote positive changes in the world. As Dr. Goodall says, “What you do makes a differe nce, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
In Bulgaria, where I live, homeless dogs are everywhere. Many people here turn a blind eye to them. But I cannot ignore the life of a street dog whenever I see one wandering in the stre et, looking for something to eat. That’s why I’m no longer a food waster. When I see wasted food, I always think of a hungry dog climbing to garbage bins, searching for food that people have thrown there. When eating in a restaurant, I’m not afraid to take leftover food to feed stray cats or dogs.
A week ago, I saw a homeless dog around the garbage bins. Immediately I knelt down, spoke to her softly and ran
my hands over her. I could see that she had had puppies. I couldn’t imagine how she could have been a ble to care for them. Hours earlier, I’d bagged up a plate of leftover fish. As I unwrapped it, she wagged her tail and sniffed at it. She ate all the fish in no time.
It’s sad, isn’t it? I can’t understand why many of us waste so much and think little of it. These homeless animals have taught me that food is precious. Even when I don’t have leftovers with me, I’ll take the time to get something from the grocery store to feed them.
I know my power is small, so I hope that next time you see wasted food, do turn it into worthy food. You have the power to save a life!
1、The author uses what Dr. Goodall says to show__________.
A.how we can develop our business
B.why it is important to be great
C.why the program is popular globally
D.how we can change the world positively
2、What can be concluded from the text?
A.There are few homeless dogs where the author lives
B.The author takes homeless dogs home and raises them
C.Seeing homeless dogs makes the author never waste food
D.People throw food into garbage bins to feed homeless dogs
3、The author took the leftover fish with him to____________.
A.feed a homeless dog he met
B.eat it when he was hungry
C.look for more homeless animals
D.set an example to those who throw away food
4、The author wrote the text to ask us to__________.
A.value our food B.treat dogs as our friends
C.save wasted food for homeless dogs D.raise homeless dogs and cats

29、Dear Peter,
How is everything goi ng? It’s great that I will go to America next month and see you soon. I feel so excited that I look forward to studying in your country.
Before I go to America, I would like to inquire about one thing. I heard that we could do some volunteering work as a student there. My oral English is good, and I know much about Chinese traditional culture. I can help those who are interested in Chinese language and culture. Would you kindly tell me what volunteering work I could do in the community close to my school, and if there is any chance for me to do it on weekends?
I think volunteering work is beneficial to me and I believe your valuable guidance will help me with my study in America.
I’d appreciate it if you can reply soon and I can’t wait to see you next month.
Yours,
Li Hua。
