English idioms are widely used, especially in the spoken language. Here are some examples
for you. Do you know what they mean?
By the skin of your teeth
If you just succeed in doing something and come very close to failing, people might say you do it “by the skin of your teeth”.For example, you pass a test by just a few points or win a match by a little bit.
Ask for the moon
If someone tells you not to ask for the moon, they mean you can’t ask for something that you can’t get or have, or try for something impossible.
On cloud nine
This expression is used to describe how you feel when something good happens to you, such as when you win first prize in a competition, when you get an A in an exam, or when you receive a nice present from your parents which you want to get so much.
Sick as a dog
If you are feeling very ill, you may have used this expression. Dogs eat everything they find, which means t hey may easily get sick. So when people say that you are “sick as a dog”, don’t feel strange or even angry because they don’t mean to offend you.

Most people say “yes” much more readily than “no”.
A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was a couple of quiet days relaxing at home. Or a roommate spends the entire weekends playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for “reference”. But, you’ve just finished it after taking a whole day to work hard.
Many people say “yes” to these kinds of requests. They tend not to consider their own
interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards .
Saying “no” requires courage and considerabl e practice, in fact, according to psychologists .
“Everyone wants to be liked,” says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist. “Saying ‘no’ risks losing the affection of the person asking the favor or even a job.”
The result is that many people say “yes” ju st for keeping the peace. But experts say this is regrettable . Anyone should have the right to say “no”.
In fact, rejecting a request can even help to strengthen a relationship because it expresses a true feeling.
But, for people used to agreeing to every request, changing can be a long and uncomfortable learning process.
Most people believe that “If I say ‘no’, I'll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to me.” This way of thinking can be replaced by this: “If he only likes me because I always do what suits him , then the price of his affection is too high in the long term.”
Steinki says the key is talking to the other person to find a mutual (相互的) solution. “One n eeds to present the situation from one’s own point of view, and to suggest how the situation can be dealt with to the advantage of both parties. The other person must have the feeling that his interests are being considered.”
When the refusal is not accepted, Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly again until the person gets the message .
61. Most people say “yes” much more readily than “no” because ________.
A. they don’t care about their own interests and feelings
B. they don’t know they will regret afterwards
C. they have already been used to saying “yes”
D. they care more about others’ affection
62. In the opinion of experts, _________ .
A. people need a lot of practice to say “no”
B. people should say “yes” to keep the peace
C. saying “no” means losing a job
D. people have the right to be liked
63. According to the writer, what should you do if your refusal is not accepted?
A. Say yes to him.
B. Repeat your reason for his acceptance
C. Just go away
D. Say no to him
64. What is the best title of the passage?
A. You Need Courage To Say “No”
B. “Yes” More Than “No”
C Anyone Has The Right To Say “No” D. It’s Hard To Say “No”
C
There are three branches of medicine. One is called “ doctor medicine,” or “scientific medicine.”Scientific doctors try to observe sicknesses, look for logical patt erns, and then find out how the human body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC. Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient world this approach probably did not cure many patients.
A second kind of medicine is called “natural cures,”or “medicine,”in which less educated
people try to cure sickness with various herbs. These folk healers also use observation and logic, but they are not aware of it. They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then they keep doing that. Folk medicine flourished long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times than doctor medicine.
The third kind is called “health spas,”or “faith healing.”Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy man and being immediately healed. Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a spell, to cure you. Some religious groups organize special healing shrines for the sick. In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests and pray to the gods. If you are feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better.
65. Doctor medicine _____________.
A. has a longer history than folk medicine.
B. has been practiced for around 1,600 years.
C. bases its treatments on observation and logic.
D. was very successful in curing sicknesses in ancient times.
66. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT used in health spas?
A. Magic power
B. Various herbs
C. Religious faith
D. A healthy life style
67.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Fork healers choose different herbs to cure disease without any sound basis
B. People who practice folk medicine need lots of formal education on herbs.
C. The success of folk medicine led to the development of doctor medicine.
D. Natural cures worked better than scientific medicine in ancient times.
68. The author’s primary purpose in this passage is to______.
A. describe different types of medicine.
B. argue for the importance of medicine in health care.
C. show the crucial role religion plays in medical treatments
D. compare the educational background of three different types of patients.

The Shenzhou Ⅶ spacecraft returned to Earth by parachute and landed on the grasslands of northern China at 5:37 p.m. Beijing time.
About 10 minutes later, a search-and-rescue team found its position and helped the three astronauts climb out.
The landing was shown on national television and the three astronauts appeared relatively well. They sat on what looked like lawn chairs an d wave to the cameras. “It was a great mission, full of challenges, but the result was perfect,” one of the astronauts, Zhai Zhigang, said after the landing.

China called the mission, its third manned space launch(发射),a complete success for the
country’s space program. The government has said it hopes to set up a space station and eventually make a moon landing.
Beijing sees the space program as a major yardstick(准绳)of the country’s economic and technological development. It is also a means of improving the country’s image at home and abroad.
China is the third country, after Russia and the United States, to send humans into space with its own spaceship.

Electronic mail(e-mail)was started in the late 1960s by the US military. By the 1980s, academics in a number of fields were using e-mail for professional collaboration. The early 1990s saw an explosion of the use of e-mail and other computer networking tools for a wide range of professional, academic, and personal purposes.
E-mail is a way of sending a message from one computer to one or more other computers around the world. First, you write down the e-mail address of the person you are sending
the message to. Then you write the message, either directly in a special e-mail software program or first in a word-processing program and transferring it into the e-mail software.
You should push a button to give a simple command to send the message. The computer system you are connected to will break the message up into tiny pieces and send them electronically to the destination. The pieces might travel numerous routes through other computers on the way. Usually within 2-3 minutes, the pieces will arrive at their destination, where the receiving computer will reassemble them into a message. The person receiving the message can check his or her mailbox at a convenient time and read the mail.

Good morning. I am Kate Green, head nurse of the school hospital. I’ll say a few words about the hospital before you move on to the library. The hospital is open from 9: 00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m. every day, but there is a number you can call anytime 746539. Of course, I hope that none of you will get sick, but in case you do become ill, I hope you know what to do. For example, if you have a really bad cold, it’s a good idea to come and see the doctor. Last year several students didn’t take this seriously, and they developed terrible coughs. But if you have just
an ordinary cold, you should usually stay in your room and have a good rest. It’s wise to have less exercise, or you will get much sicker. Any questions? If not, you can move on.

Second, some books are not sorted in proper order, making it difficult for readers to find what they want quicky. Third, the assistants don’t offer good service. They are chatting while the readers are reading quietly, which makes it difficult for readers to concentrate on books. Moreover, there is something wrong with one of the lights as well as some desks and chairs. As it is, I am afraid there will be fewer and fewer readers.
So, as a reader, I suggest that you make some necessary changes as soon as possible so that the library can benefit more people.
Yours,
Li Hua。
