In Singapore, most of us love window-shopping while some others enjoy having a picnic at East Coast Park or Changi Beach on sunny days.Singaporeans are never bothered by the occasional thunderstorm. However,we know that if it rains for long continuous periods, there will be more serious effects.Just recently the main
shopping street of Orchard Road was flooded and some part of Bukit Timah was impassable to traffic.People reacted by writing in to the newspaper to complain about this! We forget that other countries suffer much worse effects.
Elsewhere, heavy tropical(热带的)storms often result in floods that ruin crops especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This in turn usually means that the price of rice and vegetables here in Singapore will rise because we import these products from them.If there is a typhoon or tsunami, thousands of lives are lost too. This happened in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand in 2004 and it serves to remind us of how Mother Nature can cause great damage.
Weather patterns in general have changed dramatically in recent years.Scientists believe that global warming and the resulting melting of the polar ice-cap has caused the level of the ocean to rise. This in turn causes flooding of low-lying areas in countries where the land is rather flat and some parts of which is below water level. It is believed that human activities have caused Mother Nature to show her extreme anger,so it is now important that we really work together to cut down on harmful activities, for example, illegal logging (伐木) or irresponsible forest-burning to clear land for farming.

What killed King Tut(图坦卡蒙)? Historians and scientists have long believed that ancient Egypt's most famous king was probably murdered. But a recent scientific study claims to have found a different answer to this more than 3,300-year-old mystery.A team of researchers now say that King Tut,the boy ruler, died of complications (并发症) from a broken leg.
Tut's full name was Tutankhamun. He was just 9 years old when he became the ruler of Egypt in 1348 BC.His treasure-filled tomb was discovered almost a century ago.It was filled with royal riches, including a solid-gold coffin,a gold mask, and piles of jewelry.
Unfortunately Tut died at the age of 19.Many experts have thought that Tut was killed by one of his advisers, named Ay,who wanted to be king. But thanks to a major modern science project,it seems Ay is innocent.
Researchers set out to solve the mystery of King Tut's death by using the tools of science, including DNA tests and electronic scans of his mummy (木乃伊).Scientist Carsten Pusch conducted the tests on Tut for the new study. He thinks a broken leg contributed to the
young king's death.
More than 100 walking sticks were found in King Tut's tomb. This supports the team's findings. But how could a person die from a simple broken leg?
Pusch also found DNA evidence in Tut's body that indicates he had malaria (疟疾),a disease carried by mosquitoes.Malaria severely weakens the immune system.
Pusch and his fellow researchers believe the malaria and the bone disease together caused the king's fracture (骨折) to become deadly. Finally, the young king was just too weak to recover. So effects of the disease combined with the bad luck of a broken bone—not a jealous adviser—are likely the real causes of King Tut's death.

The 30 miles of steep(陡峭的) roads that snake through the mountains of Logan Canyon in Utah are enough to make most drivers' hands sweat. But Andersen,a 46 year old father of four, wasn't expecting any trouble on the road last New Year's Eve,when he set off for a ski trip to the Bear River Mountains with nine year old daughter Mia,four year old son Baylor, and nine year old neighbour Kenya.Andersen had driven through the Canyon hundreds of times over the years.
The weather was fine, but the higher they drove, the more slippery(滑的) the roads became.Rounding a sharp U-turn at mile marker 473,Andersen saw a truck that had skated off the road and immediately tapped his brakes. In an instant, the car was sliding at 25 miles per hour towards the shoulder of the highway, then rolling down a steep ten-foot dam towards the extremely cold Logan River. As it hit the water, the car tipped towards the passenger side, hesitated, and then rolled onto its roof and sank into the river.
There was no time to tell the kids what to do.The crash had broken a few windows, and within seconds, the upside-down car was filled with water.“It was frightening how fast we were completely underwater,” remembers Andersen,a soft-spoken product development manager.“You're thinking,is this how it's all going to end?”
Having lost all sense of direction,Andersen began to search the freezing water for the kids.Mia had been right next to him in the front seat; now,in the blackness,he couldn't find her.I thought,“If I don't get out, maybe none of us are going to get out.” Andersen got out of his seat belt, swam through a broken window, and, deeply and quickly, breathed air at the surface. That's when he saw a group of men, about ten in all, appear at the top of the dam.One after another, they raced down into the water.Helping onto safety all the three children, they began to shout at the father,“Who else is in the car?” Andersen says respectfully,“It_was_like_the_sight_of_angels(天使).”

答案:The story mainly tells us that a girl's father showed his love by giving flowers for her performance, birthdays, graduations and so on.It reminds us of the great value and power of love.
Love is a great power,it not only can warm our heart and give us courage to face all kinds of difficulties we meet in our daily life,it can also be passed from one to many other people.Without parents' love,we can't be someone in this wonderful world.Without our teachers' love,we can't achieve any great success.Without our friends' love,we can't be the same person as I am.
The girl's father's roses remind me of one of my childhood experiences. When I was young,my family was poor. But my mother was a genius to keep a roof above our head, with all kinds of foods on our table. While we prefer meat,my mother said she prefer vegetables.Despite the slim income of our family,we always had enough to eat,and warm clothes to wear.We are grateful to our parents for their love.
As the saying goes,“Where there is love, there is hope.” Love can be passed from one another. Our parents' love can well support a family and our love can also well support our society.。
