13、Fashion treadmill desks (跑步机办公室) might actually help improve job performance after employees get used to working while walking, according to new research.
A yearlong study of workers at a company St. Paul, Minn, found that the productivity of 40 treadmill users dropped at first because they were unable to master typing and operating a mouse while walking at a speed of up to two miles per hour.
But within four to six months, measures (测量) of performance-quality, the amount of work done, and the quality of interactions(互动) with workmates rose gradually, according to weekly surveys. At the end of the survey period, workers with treadmill desks improved their performance, which was 0.1 points higher than that before the project began.
For tasks like solving problems or taking conference calls, “ A little bit of walking is useful because it means there’s more blood flow to the brain,” said Avner Ben-N er, a professor at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and an author of the study. “ Y ou get more oxygen (氧气) and it increases the ability to think .”
Treadmill desks have got attention because of research which showed the negative (负面的,消极的)effects of sedentary lifestyles and jobs that leave workers sitting all day. But data on the effectiveness of the desks has been relatively rare. There are other downsides (不利方面) , as The Wall Street Journal wrote last year, including the possibility of falls and injuries.
Mr. Ben-Ner noted that treadmill users need some time to get used to the ergonomics (人体工程学) of walking while working, including the proper desk height. His team provided no training to employees, and he said that employers who provide such desks should offer help to get users comfortable on the machines.
“This wouldn’t be very good for people who use a needle for their jobs,” he said. “ But everyone who does brain work
knows that if you need fresh ideas, taking a walk helps.”
1.According to the passage, fashion treadmill desks offer users many advantages EXCEPT to_______. A.improve their quality of work B.increase their amount of work
C.make their health become better and better D.keep good relationships with workmates
2.Which of the following does Mr. Ben-Ner agree?
A.People can do different kinds of work when walking on treadmill.
B.The treadmill desks are fit for people solving difficult problems.
C.The more oxygen you get, the better your mood is.
D.A little walk can make your brain work more actively.
3.The underlined part “sedentary “in Paragraph 6 probably means leading a life with ____________.

A company says it has completed the first 3D-printed home recently. The home was shown to reporters and visitors at a music festival.
The building company has developed large 3D- printers that build homes with mortar, a hard and strong
material. It uses robotics, computer programs and advanced materials to make houses.
Jason Ballard is the company's chief engineer. "So I'm standing in front of the first 3D-printed home in America. This house was actually printed in high winds, blowing dust and rain." It is important for the printing programmes to operate in bad weather conditions, such as weather disasters. The goal is to print homes in developing countries. So the printer has to be light enough to move from one property to the next.
Ballard imagines that someday, many 3D-printers will operate around the world to make homes. "It's actually a lot more simple to build a printer than it is to build a house," he said. "We ran this printer at about a quarter speed to print this house, and completed it in about 48 hours of print time."
The company developed this technology not to make money but to help provide a quick, cheap housing solution for the millions of people who need it most. There are about a billion people that don't have one of life's most basic human needs, and that's safe shelter.
Ballard says his company already works on housing needs with poor families in different areas. But he says that to really make a difference, the program will need to be greatly improved. He added that since the 3D-printing process is so much faster than traditional homebuilding, a whole community could be built in just a few months. He believes over time, people can get the new home below $4,000 with the help of 3D-printers.
1.What kind of building material can be used in 3-D printing according to the passage?
A.light but strong B.light and soft.
C.strong but expensive D.hard and strong.
2.What is the meaning of the underlined word property in Paragraph 3?
A.land for farming B.land for building houses
C.land for raising animals D.land for running companies
3.It will take about hours to print a house if the printer is at its full speed.
A.12 B.24 C.36 D.48
4.What is the best title for this passage?
A.The Future of 3D-printing B.The History of 3D-printing
C.The New Use of 3D-printing D.The Instructions of 3D-printing

16、ARE you creative, shy, outgoing? Our persona lities reveal a lot about who we are. But what’s surprising is that our personality can also say something about our health. That’s according to researchers at Duke University, US.
During an experiment on 1,000 people, scientists assessed (评定) their personalities in two ways: by asking someone they knew, such as a family member or friend; then by asking someone they had just met, such as a nurse. The study found that those who were careful at age 26 were in better health after 12 years.
Being careful means that people tend to have a lot of self-control, and are less likely to smoke, the scientists said. Careful people are also more likely to have an active lifestyle and healthy diet.
From those who were least careful, 45 percent developed health problems by the age of 38. Such health issues included gum disease and high blood pressure (高血压). To compare, only 18 percent of careful people went on to develop health problems.
Another positive personality was called “openness to experience”, meaning curious and i maginative. People who have more of this personality have higher IQ scores. So they’d be more likely to know how to find medical help to prevent disease.
According to the report, if doctors assessed our personalities, it could help doctors to find which young adults need advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle. What’s surprising is that stress didn’t play a big part on a person’s health. Even though stress and anxiety (焦虑) are usually linked to bad health.
But can a doctor who knows our personality really improve our health? Or should doctors be kept away from knowing something so personal?
1.Which personality type may be better for our health, according to the research?
A.self-controlled. B.Stressed.
C.Shy. D.Careless.
2.From the passage, we learn that careful people ____.
A.are too shy to talk to strangers
B.love to ask the doctor for advice
C.are likely to have a healthy lifestyle
D.may have high blood pressure when they’re older
3.Where can you probably read the article?
A.Newspaper. B.Science fiction book.
C.Research paper. D.Travel guide.
4.What is the main idea of the article?
A.People can change their personality type.
B.Scientists have found two different personality types.
C.Personalities have something to do with our lifestyle.
D.Personalities say something about our health.

17、Before you hit ‘Enter’ on MSN, read this
It is often said that the language we use online is less formal than that we use in a letter, or in direct speech sometimes. This is true, but it can also make us in trouble sometimes.
The thing about online communication is that you have no idea what the person who is reading your messages is feeling. For this reason, it is always a good idea to be polite and cautious when writing e-mails or messages to your friends. Chinese can be a direct language, but in English, people often talk about a subject in another way. So instead of saying “Please meet me here” or “Do this for me now”, English speakers usually go for indirect phrases like “Would it be possible”, “if you have time” or “It would mean a lot to me if…”
If you have a close friend, you may still run into trouble because of your jokes. If you have asked someone to do something and they need a bit more time, you might joke with him: “What? You still haven’t done it yet? What’s wrong with you?” While this seems funny to you, your friend may feel unhappy.
If you have foreign friends in different countries, the time difference can also be a factor. While you are waking up for class on Friday morning, they may be having a party on Friday night. You will be serious and they will, probably, be excited. So don’t be angry if they seem not to care about you. Just try to message them at the proper time. 1.According to the passage, we learn that our letters are more ______ than the e-mails.
A.formal B.direct
C.different D.funny
2.As a language, Chinese is ______, but English is not.
A.polite B.rude
C.direct D.formal
3.Why should we be polite and cautious while chatting online?
A.Because we mustn’t play jokes online.
B.Because our friends are easy to be angry.
C.Because it can help us avoid lots of troubles.
D.Because we can’t see our friends online.
4.According to the passage, which of the following is right?
A.It is OK to connect your friend by MSN anytime.
B.Using the proper way to chat online is necessary.
C.Don’t ask your friend to do something for you by MSN.
D.Never play jokes with your friends.

19、Recently,a survey has been made in our school on whether you want a little brother or sister. The opinions are different.
Here are the results. About forty percent students think it's good to have a brother or a sister. They can help each other and share happiness and sadness together. And they won't feel lonely anymore. What's more, they think they'll get freedom.
But others disagree. They think they won't get used to the change. They also worry that their parents won't love them as much as before. Besides, they're afraid that the new baby will be so noisy that it may bother their study.
In my opinion,it's hard to say whether it's good or bad to have a brother or sister. But we should respect our parents' choices. After all, they're the persons who will make the final decision.。
