第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节(共10个小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项 A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A
Building a foundation for your child of family values may not be as easy as you think. Often we believe that our child will pick up on our values if they live in the same home. While they may pick up many of our values, parents need to remember they are not the only influence in their child’s life. These outside values often compete with family values for your child’s attention. If we do not make a conscious(有意的) effort to instill our values into our children, they may not get instilled at all.
I wish I had learned that lesson a little earlier. I thought if I lived my values for my children they would pick them up and make their own. Sometimes this happened and sometimes it didn’t. I often see twenty-something “kids” who have no faith in many of the values of their family in favor of the values of their friends. Children
will often pick up the negative you show quicker than the positive, so the positive things need extra focus to set them.
Some of the influences your children face every day include their church, their school, their friends, any clubs or sporting groups they are part of and more. Kids spend many hours a day at school and with their friends. Sometimes in the business of life, we suppose our children will obtain that foundation we want for them. Instilling a foundation of family values to sustain(维持) your child requires more than living it in front of them. That is important, but building up your child with this important foundation must become intentional.
That means we plan times to gather as a family. We plan activities together that show the values we want to pass on. We talk about our values; we live our values; we discuss the values of others and how they differ from ours; we constantly look for opportunities and make our own opportunities to share these values in word or deed with our children.
Family values give our children a foundation to build upon. It helps them know they are loved and gives them a sense of belongings. Upon this sure foundation, they can spread their wings and grow to become parents who share these same values with their own children.
21. The underlined word “instill our values into” in the 1st paragraph probably means “______”.
A. get our ideas out of
B. impress our ideas on
C. collect our ideas for
D. force our ideas upon
22. We can learn from the passage that children _______.
A. sustain their family values easily
B. will hold their family values with age
C. often discuss family values of others
D. accept negative values more quickly
23. The passage mainly tells us about _______.
A. the importance and the way to pick up family values
B. a lesson the writer learned in educating his(her) kids
C. the influences the children face while growing up
D. some negative and positive family values
B
There are many people you are well advised to treat kindly: Your child’s teacher, your husband or wife, your boss and so on.
Until now, that best-behavior-required list has not included your Uber driver, or for that matter, taxi drivers. Old thinking: Hey, they’re here to serve me. I don’t have to make a special effort to be nice to them.
Dangerously wrong.
A recent New York Times story told the instructive tale of a Uber passenger, Hussein Kanji, who says he’s really not sure how he made his driver angry. All he knows is that his driver-generated rating went way down and the wait for a Uber car became hours instead of minutes.
Be careful, Uberians: If you’re feeling angry when you slide into the back seat and you give your driver the silent treatment, your reputation may get damaged in the driver-generated ratings. If you’re among the people one Uber driver described as “generally negative”, watch out.
Uber isn’t the only front on this battlefield. The ability to rate someone’s service is one of the successes of the Internet. It helps everyone weed out people with bad attitudes and worse habits.
These ratings should cut both ways. A while back, the auction site(拍卖网站) eBay made many of its sellers angry when it started preventing them from giving negative ratings to buyers. Until then, sellers and buyers had threatened each other with negative reviews. Too many negative reviews could get you thrown off.
Then eBay shifted the balance of power to buyers. Sellers can still write a bad comment, but the overall rating cannot be anything but positive. Thus eBay has become a place where all is for the best. Think positive!
We know that being nice to people all day can be exhausting. We’ve also seen people who shout at those who don’t measure up to their expectations for service.
Uber is reportedly about to spread worldwide. It is a welcome competitor because it fits the needs of customers in a new way. We know Uber is a two-way street. But drivers who get too picky may end up with no passengers.
Everyone, behave!
24. In general, people think of Uber drivers as people who ________.
A. they can take advantage of
B. they don’t have to be nice to
C. are required to be on their best behavior
D. need better treatment from customers
25. The underlined phrase “weed out” (Para. 6) can best be replaced by ________.
A. hate
B. get rid of
C. value
D. win back
26. The author has written this article to ________.
A. show that when using services like Uber, your behavior directly affects the
service you get
B. prove that giving and receiving bad ratings can influence your life
C. suggest that tools like Uber and eBay can reflect what kind of person you are
D. stress that both customers and service providers should be generally
respectful and positive
C
The Lion King was one of Disney’s most successful movies. The movie was so well-loved by audience everywhere, that Disney executive Michael Eisner, began thinking it would make a successful stage play as well. When he told co-worker Thomas Schumacher to start planning, Schumacher was stunned. He felt the project was impossible. But Eisner insisted. He said that all they needed was a “brilliant idea”.
After many months, Schumacher found his brilliant idea. “The answer,” he recalls, “was, in fact, quite simple—Julie,Taymor,” a woman who has been creating magical theatrer for many years.
Taymor accepted the challenge, putting all her years of theatrical experience
into creating a new concept for the Lion King. When she began to address the question of how to bring the animal characters to life, she knew she did not want to hide the actors inside big animal suits. She wanted the audience to see the actors’ faces and bodies, which would represent the animal’s human qualities. So she designed costumes that revealed the actor within.
Not every good idea works out, so even the most creative person must be willing to let go of an idea and look for a better one. For example, the mask for Mufasa, the lion king, went through many changes. At one point, Taymor’s co-designer, Michael Curry, created a large mask that the actor would lift on and off. But it looked awkward, so Curry went back to the drawing board and came up with a better idea.
Creative ideas are not always complex. Sometimes, the simplest idea is the most powerful. Taymor calls these simple, but powful ideas “true theatre”. For example, ribbons can show someone’s tears, and blue silk can show water.
Many people helped make The Lion King a success. It was a team effort in every sense of the word, yet each person added his or her personal touch to make the production memorable.
The creative work of the entire team pays off every night. People are thrilled by this imaginative journey to Africa. After the glorious opening, the amazing sights continue. The audience sees frightening hyenas, an elephant graveyard, an eye-popping stampede---everything, in fact, that was in the moive, but different enough to be a whole new event. By the end of the show, many in the audience find it hard to remember that the Lion King was ever a movie.
27. Michael Eisner thought that the movie The Lion King could become a successful
stage play because _________.
A. he has a brilliant idea
B. all his co-workers are creative
C. the movie was great hit
D. it was one of Disney’s movies
28. To bring the animal characters to life, Julie Taymor managed to ________.
A. provide animal suits to create real stage effects
B. motivate audience to approach characters on stage
C. design costumes to hide the actors inside
D. display human qualities of the animal characters
29. When designing the mask for Mufasa, the lion king, Michael Curry _______.
A. put every good idea into practice
B. made a lot of changes to seek a better design
C. found his create ideas failing all the time
D. had created a mask which proved a success
30. According to the passage, the stage play proved to be very successful due to
the following factors EXPECT_______.
A. the design of complex plot
B. the cooperation of the entire team
C. the choices of better ideas
D. the power of simple ideas

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Handwritten thank-you letters are such a simple way of making other people feel good, it is strange that so few people write them anymore. At work, a thank-you letter to employees is unbelievably effective. It costs little and has no side effects. The effort involved in writing letters very low. The pleasure on receiving them is very high. 31
Doug Conant, manager of Campbell’s Soup Company since 2001, knows the power of thank you letters. He said that every day he works with an assistant, searching the company for people deserving thanks. 32 Over the past 10 years he has sent 30,000 thank-you letters to his employees—more than 10 each day. The reward is huge: his company has remained one of the most successful in its field for years.
33 There seem to be three reasons. Firstly, chief executives(主管) running
companies think their own work is more valuable than that of others. 34 Secondly, they aren’t close enough to the business to know who deserves thanks. Thirdly, they have forgotten the strange human truth that almost everyone would do almost anything in return for a few words of appreciation.
In these days of such busy schedules and people running all over the place and trying to get ahead, sometimes we forget the simplest things in life are the most powerful and rewarding. You need to think to yourself about a time someone sent you a thank-you and how much it meant to you. 35
A. You may ask what side effects exactly mean.
B. He then writes them a thank-you letter.
C. This makes them an excellent way to reward and motivate staff.
D. Why are thank-you letters so important?
E. Always remember to “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you!”
F. But if these letters are so inspiring, why don’t more managers write them?
G. Since no one ever writes them thank-you letters they don’t write any themselves.

第二节:概要写作(满分25分)
Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.
While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere(仅仅的) tools. For example, these robots will be about to distinguish(区别) when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user. The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.
Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces. Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.
The more interaction(互动) the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees. “We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.
