The only way you can become a good reader is through practice. You can not read a few paragraphs in your English book once a week and become a fluent reader. You need to read constantly. You should carry something to read with you wherever you go.
Take an English magazine, for example, and carry it in your pocket. Whenever you have the chance, turn on a page and read a paragraph or two.
You should read in as many different subject areas as you can. You should try to find English books on different subjects and read a few paragraphs in each chapter in each book. Your eyes and mind need to practise. Your eyes need to practise moving quickly across the page from left to right, and your mind needs to practise making quick associations between the printed word and meaning.
When you begin to read you should ask yourself a basic question: why am I reading this? If you are reading to practise your English, you will read in a certain way. You will read slowly and concentrate on the relationship between the words and the grammatical structures. If you are reading for information about a particular subject, you will read in another way. You will focus on main parts and supporting facts. You use the grammar of the passage as a means, not an end.
Reading to practise English is the way most foreign students read English. In school you do not read English to learn about a particular
subject; for example, you do not read English to learn history. You read English to learn how a sentence is put together, how the verbs agree with the subjects, what the clause is, etc.
25. To become a good reader you need to ________.
A. have a large vocabulary
B. understand grammar
C. read a lot
D. move your eyes across pages quickly
26. With which statement would the author agree?
A. You read anything with the same skill.
B. You read a newspaper differently from a textbook.
C. Reading from right to left is an important skill.
D. You should read only the material that interests you.
27. When you are reading for information, you use grammar ________.
A. as a tool, not as your purpose
B. as your purpose, not as a tool
C. as both your purpose and a tool
D. as neither your purpose nor a tool
C
Honesty may well be the best policy, but it often deserts us when no one is watching, psychologists report today. Experiments with an honesty box to collect payments for hot drinks show that people are better at
paying up under the gaze of a pair of eyes. The surprise was that the eyes were not real, but photographed.
Researchers at Newcastle University set up the experiment in secret. They attached a poster to a cupboard of mugs above an honesty box alongside a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk. Over ten weeks, they alternated (轮换)each week between images of eyes and pictures of flowers.
Dr. Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study, said that even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make people behave more honestly. The effect may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed as early humans formed social groups that increased their chances of survival. Individuals had to co-operate for the good of the group, rather than act selfishly.
“If nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we think we’re being watched we should behave better, so people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,” Dr. Bateson said.
“We thought we’d get a slight effect with eyes, but it was quite striking how much difference they made. Even at a subconscious level, it seems people respond to eyes, and that might be because eyes send a strong biological signal we have evolved(进化)to respond to. ”
The finding, which researchers believe sheds light on our evolutionary past, could be turned to practical use. The psychologists say images of
eyes could promote ticket sales on public transport and improve monitor systems to prevent antisocial behavior.
28. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. the effect of honesty
B. the evolution on honesty
C. the policy of honesty
D. the importance of honesty
29. We learn from the experiments that ______.
A. everyone is born to be honest
B. people behave honestly to survive
C. people become more honest with evolution
D. eyes have a bigger effect on honesty than expected
30. Why do people behave more honestly under the stare of eyes?
A. They fear to be laughed at by others.
B. They want to leave a good impression.
C. They have got the nature through evolution.
D. They take the eyes in the photo for the real ones
31. Images of eyes can be applied to all except _______.
A. ticket sales on public transport
B. cold drink sales in public places
C. places with “No spitting!” signs
D. Christmas decoratio ns in one’s home
D
Too often we accuse others of not listening, pretending that we ourselves are faultless, yet in our hearts we know that many of the mistakes we make come about because we haven’t listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we haven’t listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we haven’t quite understood what someone meant when they were talking to us. Anyone who has ever taken the minutes of a long meeting will know how hard it is to remember –despite the benefit of notes – exactly what everyone said. But success depends on getting things right – and that means listening.
Listening is not the same thing as hearing; it is not an effortless activity. It demands attention and concentration. It may mean quizzing the speaker for additional information or for clarification—It is always better to ask than to continue regardless and get things wrong. However, if you allow your mind to wander onto something else, even for a few minutes, you’ll miss what the speaker is s aying—probably at the very moment when he or she is saying something critical. And not having heard, you won’t know you’ve missed anything until it’s too late.
The most common bad habit we have is to start thinking of what we are going to say about the subject long before the other speaker has finished. We then stop listening. Even worse, this often adds rudeness to inattentiveness, as once you have decided what to say there is a fair chance you will interrupt to say it. Good listeners don’t interrupt.
In fact it is often worth explaining the main idea of what you have just been told before going on to make your own points. Nobody is offended by this and it shows that you have listened well.
Above all, be patient and accept that many people are not very good communicators. It’s helpful to remember that the ways people move and position themselves while they are speaking can reveal a great deal about what they are saying. Equally importantly you should put yourself in the other person’s place, both intelle ctually and emotionally; it will help you to understand what they are getting at and form a response. But don’t be too clever. Faced with a know-all, many people keep quiet because they see no point in continuing.
32. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Don’t be too clever
B. Be a good listener.
C. Don’t miss anything critical
D. Think of the speaker
33. In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “what they are getting at” means _______.
A. what they imply
B. what they want
C. what they attack
D. what they achieve
34. What is the writer’s opinion?
A. If you want to be a good listener, you should be very emotional.
B. Speakers should talk before their listeners explain what they’ve heard.
C. If you don’t want to get things wrong, it’s important to listen.
D. It’s hard to be a good listener because listening tests your intelligence.
35. What is the lesson we probably can learn from this passage?
A. Don’t accuse others of not listening while talking with them.
B. Don’t get anything wrong if you miss what the speaker is saying.
C. Listening inattentively may cost you your success.
D. Think carefully of what you’re going to say before the speaker finishes.

School phobia is a type of illness which causes the students, typically between the ages of 8-13, to be afraid to go to school. Symptoms include stomachaches, tiredness, shaking, a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet.
36 Most commonly it is the result of separation anxiety, but it can also be caused by different kinds of stress. A child who has recently moved, suffered a loss, or gone through a divorce may develop school
phobia, and phobias can also develop in response to an unrecognized learning disability, and poor self-image.
37 He or she may become physically ill when ordered to school, or pretend to be sick to avoid going. When the child arrives at school, he or she may run away, or develop behavioral problems in class. When school is discussed, the child can become impatient, upset or angry.
Many techniques can be used to manage school phobia. But research suggests that much more effective treatment is required for school phobia to prevent problems developing in later life. Children with this condition usually benefit from seeing a psychologist or doctor. 38 . As soon as a school phobia is identified, parents should take action too. Like other phobias, school phobia gets worse if it is left untreated, and it can prevent the child from succeeding in school. 39 . If bullying (child abuse) is a cause, for example, the bullying situation should be solved. A teacher can meet the child at the door and take him or her to class, and provide support so that the child feels a friendly adult is always available.
Changes at home can include supportive language from parents, along with support like assistance with homework. If a child lacks confidence, parents may encourage the child to take up new hobbies. 40 Parents might also talk to their children about their own fears of school and
how they got over them, and their own enjoyment of school and school-like activities.
A. It will help children to feel good about themselves.
B. But a child with phobia refuses to accept adults’ support.
C. A child with school phobia usually refuses to go to school.
D. Adjustments can be made at home and in the classroom to help.
E. This common phobia is associated with a wide variety of causes.
F. The most effective treatment is to help the child have a sense of success.
G. And the assistance can help parents and school officials support the child.

Community Service
During the winter vacation, the students in our community joined in the meaningful activity, in where all of us did our bit for our community.
First we went to visit the old lady who lived all alone. While we were in her home, one of us chatted with her and the rest helped do a thorough cleaning. We sweep the floor and dusted the table. When the work was done,
the house looked really neat and tidy. Then we went to the sports center, there different sports facilities needed polish. We set out to work at once. In no time everything was dust-free. To make the environment clean, we also picked up the litter on the grass and the paths. As the Spring Festival was near the corner, we put up New Year decoration on the billboard and a poster with the characters Happy Chinese New Year on it.
Have done all these, we saw a more pleasant community. Tired as we were, we felt happy as all of our work pay off.

【参考答案】
Dear Mr. Smith,
I feel excited to learn from the web that volunteers are needed for English Winter Camp for Kids. I am longing for such a job because I love language learning and working with kids as well.
My name is Li Hua––17 years old, a bright and cheerful boy in Guang Ming High School. My classmates have elected me to be class monitor as I get on well with others and have good communication skills. At the moment, I work as the head of the English Club in our school. Last summer I stayed at an English summer camp in England and gained some experience. My English is good enough to deal with such a job.
I promise to work with patience, high efficiency and strong sense of responsibility.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
With best wishes
Li Hua

Good morning. I am Kate Green, head nurse of the school hospital. I’ll say a few words about the hospital before you move on to the library. The hospital is open from 9:00 to 17:00 every day except Saturday afternoon and Sunday. There is a number you can call any time 7465139. Of course, I hope that none of you would get sick, but in case you do become ill, I hope you know what to do. For example, if you have a really bad cold, it’s a good idea to come and see the doctor. Last year several students didn’t take this seriously, and they developed terrible coughs. But if you have just an ordinary cold, you should usually stay in your room and have a good rest. It is not wise to have more exercise, or you will get much sicker. Any questions? If not, you can move on.
Text 7

M: Why, that’s where I work. Who is it?
W: Davey Thomas.
M: Why, why that’s me! When did I borrow it? Oh, boy! I remember now.
I let Dennis, my neighbor, have it a l ong time ago. I’m awfully sorry. I’ll get it back as soon as possible.

W: Secretarial work. Before that, I was at University of Manchester. I’ve got a degree in education.
M: You said you’ve been working in Canada. Do you hav e any special reasons for wanting to come back?
W: I thought it would be nice to be near family again.
M: I see, and how do you see yourself developing in this job?
W: Well, I’m ambitious. I do hope that my career as a secretary will lead me eventually into
management.

M: Can I help you?
W: Yes. I want to paint my son's bedroom. I think sky blue is a pretty color.
M: How many gallons of paint do you want?
W: I don't know.
M: Well, then do you know the size of the room?
W: No. I'm sorry I don't.
M: Is it larger or smaller than this store ?
W: It's about half the size of this store.
M: You need about two gallons, then. Why don't you get a painter?
W: My son and I want to paint the room together.
M: All right. Here. Read these instructions. Do you want the paint now? W: Yes, please.
M: Two gallons of sky blue. That will be $20.

Let's take a walk around the Entertainment Building now. The first room we're coming to is the theater. This room shows videos of special interest and is also used for lectures. Today there's a video showing about the people who are teaching in the university. So if you'd like to learn more about the life of those people living and working in the university, you will find that interesting.
Now we're coming to the Picture Gallery. This shows life in the university over the last 100 years and all the various changes, which happened with the growth of the university. There are paintings and photos, all done by local artists. Some of them now are famous. It's a great collection and people think highly of it.
Well, I'm going to leave you and you can walk around the museum on your own for a while. We'll meet back at the entrance in an hour and a half. I hope you can enjoy your time in the university today. Thank you.。
