AECS-1010-AA02
Reflective Application Kit
Application Note 5040
Introduction
The Avago Technologies AECS-1010 color sensor is a light-to-voltage converting device. The sensor converts the primary color components of light, namely Red (R), Green (G) and Blue (B) to analog voltage outputs. In order to use the sensor in reflective mode, it is incorporated into an application kit consisting of an illuminant-sensor module and post-sensing amplifying circuitry. The illuminant-sen-sor module contains a white LED as the light source and the Avago Technologies color sensor as the detector. An optical lens is added to focus reflected light onto the color sensor. The kit also features an alignment tool for main-taining an optimum gap from sensor to target surface.
Reflective Mode Theory of Operation
In reflective mode, the color sensor detects light reflected off a surface or an object. The application kit is designed such that both the light source and the color sensor are placed close to the target surface/object. Light coming from the LED is bounced off a surface/object and mea- sured by the sensor. For a given light source, the color of light reflected off a surface/object is a function of the surface/object color.
For example, white light incident onto a red surface is reflected as red. Since any color is uniquely represented by its R, G and B components, the application kit effectively measures the color of a surface/object by converting the R, G and B components of the reflected light to analog voltages. In addition, given that the outputs increase linearly with the intensity of reflected light, the sensor also measures the reflectivity of a surface/object.

Applications
Representing color point in terms of electrical signals provides an accurate and consistent mean to ‘name’ a color. Converting colors into the form of electrical signals allows us to control and manipulate color via signal pro-cessing. A color sensor can be used to detect, measure and control color in either an open or closed-loop system. Potential applications include color control in industrial processes, color coding, environmental lighting, white point control in emissive display and many more.
