Introduction
This book is a companion to The Science Writers’ Handbook: Everything You Need To Know To Pitch, Publish, and Prosper in The Digital Age. If you’re looking for advice on getting started as a science writer, on setting up a freelance science-writing business, or on the fundamental skills of idea-finding, reporting, and writing, please check out the Handbook.
In 2009, just as a novel strain of influenza began to spread from Mexico to the United States to the rest of the world, writer Eula Biss gave birth to a son in Chicago. Even before a vaccine for the H1N1 flu became widely available, Biss heard other new mothers—mostly affluent, mostly well-educated—debating whether or not to inoculate their children against the virus. Biss had never questioned the value of vaccinations, and she inoculated her son against H1N1 as soon as she could. But she kept thinking about the doubts she’d heard expressed. Where did they come from, she wondered, and why did they persist?
In this book, I’ll discuss how I and others turn ideas into finished essays. I’ll talk about essay reporting and research techniques, where and how essays get published, and how essay elements can strengthen many types of stories. I’ll look at great science essays old and new, and examine what makes them great. Though this book is about written essays, its advice is also relevant to photographers, videographers, and radio producers.
