Learning English Through Unit 5
As a seventh grader, English class is always a mix of excitement and challenge. Unit 5 in our PEP English textbook has definitely kept me on my toes! The themes of sports, health, and safety have opened my eyes to so many new words and expressions.
One of the first lessons focused on various sports like basketball, table tennis, and gymnastics. I was familiar with words like "dribble" and "serve", but phrases like "do a split" and "score a goal" were new to me. Practicing the different verb + noun collocations really helped cement their meanings.
Then we learned about actions related to injuries and first aid like "put on a bandage", "call an ambulance", and "go to the hospital". While I hope never to use those in real life situations, knowing the vocabulary makes me feel more prepared just in case. The dialogues about responding to emergencies were very practical.
My favorite part was learning fun idioms related to health and fitness. Expressions like "be a couch potato", "go for a run", and "work out at the gym" just make English sound so vibrant and alive. I'll never forget what "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" means!
Beyond vocabulary, we've also studied quite a bit of grammar. The lessons on modal verbs like "can", "should", and "must" were really insightful. I hadn't realized how nuanced their meanings were for expressing ability, suggestion, and obligation. The practice exercises drilling these helped a lot.
Another grammar focus was on verbs followed by an infinitive or a gerund. Figuring out whether to use the base form like "I want to join the team" or the -ing form like "I'm looking forward to playing soccer" took some getting used to. But all the examples and rules made the patterns clearer.
What really tied everything together though were the longer texts we read and listened to about topics like youth sports, anti-doping policies, and healthy lifestyles. Extracting key details and discussing the main ideas helped solidify my comprehension of the new language.
Perhaps my biggest takeaway though has been about cross-cultural understanding. Learning that basketball was
invented in the US but is hugely popular in China was fascinating. And contrasting attitudes towards intense training regimes for young athletes in different countries prompted some
thought-provoking discussions.
Looking ahead, I feel much more confident using English to communicate about wellness, fitness, and recreational activities thanks to Unit 5. Whether I'm discussing my favorite sports, encouraging friends to exercise more, or dealing with a medical situation, I've got a solid base of relevant words and phrases to draw from.
While mastering a new language is undoubtedly challenging, units like this make the journey feel rewarding and purposeful. Step-by-step, I'm acquiring invaluable tools to broaden my horizons and connect with ideas from cultures around the world.

My Experience with Unit 5
Unit 5 of our English textbook was all about travelling and seeing the world. At first, I wasn't that excited about it because
I've never really travelled much beyond going to my grandparents' house a few hours away. But as we started learning about different places and cultures, I got really interested!
The readings were awesome - we learned about cool places like the Sahara Desert, the Amazon Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, and more. The passages had great descriptions that made me feel like I was almost there. Like when it talked about the shifting sands of the Sahara and the mirages on the horizon. Or describing the dense greenery and raucous animal calls in the Amazon. I could vividly picture it all in my mind.
The grammar focused on things like describing locations using prepositions, comparing things with degrees of adjectives, and giving suggestions with modals like should, could, etc. It was all super useful for being able to discuss travel destinations and give advice. I struggled a bit with using the right degree of adjective at first, like when to say "more exciting" vs. "most exciting." But after doing the practice exercises, I got the hang of it.
The listening exercises were fun too. We got to hear recordings set in different places, with people speaking in various accents. One was these Australian tourists exploring the
Great Barrier Reef. Another was a guy giving a tour of an ancient city in Peru. It really helped me get used to understanding different English speakers.
My favorite part though was the speaking activities we did. We had to work in groups and do things like plan an imaginary vacation, complete with budgeting costs, picking destinations, mapping out our itinerary, etc. We also gave persuasive travel ads trying to sell our dream trip to the rest of the class. It forced us to really use all the language we had learned in a Really practical way.
I got super into planning my dream vacation, which was a tour across Europe. I researched places I wanted to go like London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, and more. I looked up costs for hotels, transportation, food, activities. I made a tight schedule trying to fit in all the top sites. My group mates and I had to negotiate a lot because we didn't always agree - they wanted to spend more time in Italy, while I was pushing for more days in England since I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. But we worked it out in the end.
Giving my travel ad was kind of nerve-wracking because I'm not a very confident public speaker. But practicing with my group helped, and our ad ended up being one of the best! We
made a cool slideshow with great photos, spoke about all the key highlights with clear, persuasive language, and even threw in some jokes and humor. Our teacher said we really made her want to go on our dream Europe trip.
While the unit was challenging with all the new vocabulary, speaking practice, and cultural knowledge we had to learn, it was one of my favorites. I feel like I can really discuss travel more comfortably now in English. More importantly, it opened my eyes to how amazing other parts of the world are. This unit seriously increased my wanderlust - I came away with such a strong desire to get out and explore. To see those natural wonders and experience different cultures firsthand.
Before, the idea of long-distance travel seemed daunting and not really for someone like me. But now I'm motivated to save up money, because affordable student backpacking trips are definitely possible if you plan right. Who knew a English textbook unit could inspire me to dream of becoming a world traveler? I can't wait for my first big adventure beyond my hometown. Thanks to Unit 5, I've caught the travel bug bad! Maybe I'll bump into some of you on a backpacking hostel someday as we trade stories from the road.

Unit 5 of our English textbook this semester was all about "How About Going Out?" It covered different places we can go like parks, museums, and theaters. I really enjoyed this unit because it taught me lots of useful vocabulary and expressions for talking about different places and activities outside the home.
One reading passage was about a family day out at a science museum. I learned words like "exhibition", "display", and "interactive" to describe the different things you can see and do at a museum. The dialogue showed how to buy tickets, ask for student discounts, and discuss what exhibitions to see. It was very practical language that I can definitely use if I go to a museum myself.
Another passage introduced words for talking about a day at the park like "woods", "lake", "feed the ducks", and "have a picnic". The pictures looked so nice - I'd love to spend a sunny day relaxing and playing outdoor games in a big park like that. The grammar focus on suggesting activities with "How about..." and "Let's..." was super helpful too.
My favorite part though was the poem "Leisure" by W.H. Davies. The vivid descriptions of lounging in green gardens, watching streams trickle by, and feeling the cool air really made me appreciate the beauty of nature. I want to spend more free
time outdoors enjoying peaceful moments like the ones described in the poem instead of always being stuck inside.
Overall, this unit broadened my horizons and made me excited to get out and explore all the cool places my city has to offer like museums, parks, theaters, and historical sites. I feel much more confident now using English to discuss going out, buy tickets, make suggestions, and describe my experiences thanks to the vocabulary and situations covered here.
