After the examination, the doctor told my parents my sight would get worse and that I would lose my sight finally. On the way home from hospital, no one said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond the glass rather than see it?
That September, I entered middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful of books to read. To keep up with other children, I took great trouble to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What’s worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools.
However, then I did not have audio books and electronic devices like kids do now. Instead, Mom volunteered to read out loud. Mom worked part-time, cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. She put on her reading glasses. Mom always thought those glasses made her look old. To me, she looked like a teacher.
In my room, Mom’s voice competed with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on
listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence. Teachers praised me for having a good memory. Reading removed my fear for my failing sight, reading also made me curious about other people’s challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each page, my mind lit up with every new book.
True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mom, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. This was the most precious gift from a mother to her child.

B. The author didn’t do well in the exam.

A. the author’s sight recovered finally
B. reading made the author more sensitive
C. the author’s mother didn’t work to look after him
D. reading made the author not worry about his sight
27. Which of the following could be the title of the text?
A. My eyesight trouble
B. An unforgettable experience
C. With ears wide open
D. About Mother’s love
C
Since I started working part-time at a grocery store, I have learned that a customer is more than someone who buys something. To me, a customer is a person whose memory fails entirely once he or she starts to push a shopping cart(购物手推车). One of the first things customers forget is how to count. There is no other way to explain how so many people get in their express line, which is clearly marked 15 items or less, with 20, 25 or even a cart load of items.
Customers also forget why they came to the store in the first place. Just as I finish ringing up
an order, a customer will say, “Oops, I forgot to pick up a fresh loaf of bread. I hope you don’t mind waiting while I go to get it.” Five minutes later, he’s back with the bread, a bottle of milk, and three rolls of paper towels. What is stranger is that customers also seem to forget that they have pay for their groceries. Instead of writing a check or looking for a credit card while I am ringing up the groceries, a customer will wait until I announce the total. Then, in surprise, she says, “Oh no, what did I do with my check book?” After 5 minutes of digging through her purse, she borrows my pen be cause she’s forgotten hers. But I have to tolerate customers because they pay my salary, and that’s something I can’t afford to forget.
28. What does the author say about his customers?
A. They cannot count numbers.
B. They sometimes jump the queue.
C. They don’t know how to express themselves.
D. They behave as if their memories have totally failed.
29. According to the text, who are supposed to be in the express line?
A. Customers with nothing bought.
B. Customers with not more than 15 items.
C. Customers with items between 15 and 25.
D. Customers with 25 or even a cart load of items.
30. When customers arrive at the check-out counter, they _____.
A. find their pens lost
B. go back and get more items
C. cannot wait to pay for their groceries
D. prefer paying by check to paying by a credit card
31. We can infer from the text that _____.
A. business in the grocery store runs well
B. the author finds his present job full of fun
C. the author’s part-time job calls for patience
D. customers go to grocery stores without planning
D
Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something
that is not yet ripe(成熟的) or finished.
For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today --- a person who is new in a job.
About 100 years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the American west. Old-timers used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities back east. The greenhorn lacked the skills he would need to live in the west.
Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello."
It describes the unpleasant feeling that a person has when someone has something that he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay raise and she does not.
In most places in the world, a green light is a signal to move ahead. A green light on a traffic signal means your car can continue on. In everyday speech, a green light means approval to continue with a project.
32. If a person was a greenhorn, he might ___________.
A. be good at growing plants
B. get along well with others
C. be a soldier in the 16th century
D. have no experience in doing something
33. When you have trouble in growing flowers, you can ask for help from ___________.
A. a green thumb
B. a green light
C. a greenhorn
D. a green-eyed monster
34. If a girl refuses your invitation to a dance party but accepting another gentleman’s, you may___________.
A. need to buy a green light
B. have to get a green thumb
C. show them your greenhorn
D. be affected by the green-eyed monster
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The origin of the word “green ”.
B. Some expressions concerning green.
C. The story of a green-eyed monster.
D. Some ways of how to use words properly.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
The right pair of exercise shoes can do a lot to prevent discomfort and injuries, personal trainers say. Here are some shopping tips:
36 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking, running, tennis, cross-training or another specialty will provide the best support for your feet. Shop when you normally exercise. Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes swelling up as much as a half-size by nighttime. 37
Try them on. Never grab a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy. Bring the type of socks you’d wear to work out and go for a walk through the store.
38 You should be able to spread your toes out comfortably. Make sure there’s about a
half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit snugly (warmly and comfortably) against your heel and not move up and down. If your feet are different sizes, buy based on the larger one.
Talk to an expert. Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride (步伐) and the shape of your feet. 39
40 Many trainers recommend switching footwear every three to five months, if possible, to maintain(保持)proper cushioning and support. One tip: if you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go.
A. Think about how much you can afford to buy the workout shoes.
B. Consider your type of exercise.
C. Focus on fit.
D. So don’t shop first thing in the morning if you often work out in the evening.
E. Pay more attention to new style shoes
F. Replace worn shoes regularly.
G. Usually they can recommend the best shoes to guard against injuries.

Dear Bill,
I am glad to receive your letter. Thank you for your caring for the weather in my hometown. Now I’d like to tell you something about the hazy weather.
During this year, the smog has occurred many times, which has done great harm to us. Some traffic accidents have happened as a result of the heavy smog weather. Some people have to go to see the doctor mainly because of some serious diseases caused by polluted air.
People have realized the severe consequences brought about by the smog and the importance of protecting the environment. Nowadays, we are taking measures to reduce the smog weather. We should go to work or school by bus or on foot. Besides, we should plant more trees. Would you like to tell me some good ideas?
I am looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua。
